Meir Kalmanson thought they, too, should get to 3 the big day. So as he 4 a Super Bowl party being held at a New York City club a friend owned, he invited six 5 men he met on the streets to join him.
Over burgers, wings and soda, Kalmanson and his homeless 6 watched the game. Kalmanson describes the 7 as “warm, exciting energy. Conversation flowed. We were on the edge of our seats, 8 , laughing.”
But the game played just a small role in the night’s 9 , he says. More important was the men’s 10 with one another and the other fans. “We were part of a bigger party that was happening,” says Kalmanson. “So, if you walked in you couldn’t 11 who was homeless and who wasn’t.” As a result, “the men felt that they were 12 of something. They had their dignity 13 .” For that evening, they were no longer outsiders. They 14 .
Ultimately, the Super Soul Parties are more than a sporting event. They’re opportunities to bring awareness to the plight of the homeless while making them feel a part of a larger 15 .

The “meaning” of Christmas, which is so often talked about at this time of year, operates on two levels. Firstly, there is the level of 1 ; the rituals and objects we 2 with it. Psychologically, we hold on to these because they 3 us historically and give us meaning. They develop and are incorporated into our internal world as a way of 4 ourselves from the chaos of the world outside. Traditions are important because they bring us together in a 5 sense of belonging.
On the second and 6 level, the Christmas story is one of celebration and 7 . Tradition may be useful psychologically, but ultimately it’s 8 and finite. A Christmas based solely on traditions will soon 9 its meaning because tradition is easily invented and just as easily 10 . The real meaning of Christmas is love.
I’m a great 11 in the power of tradition and ritual, but knowing that most of our traditions were invented by our ancestors can be quite liberating, as it means that we too are 12 to create our own traditions to 13 us together. This is something I often discuss with my patients and 14 them to try themselves. As families become increasingly fragmented, I think realising that you can create your own family traditions, and doing so consciously, can help to bring people together and forge a sense of 15 .

Have you ever sat in a hospital bed and had the assembled doctors talk about you as though you didn’t exist Or a doctor comes up to your bed, looks at your chart and 1 off without saying a word If so, then you’re not alone. This behaviour makes patients feel belittled and 2 , and is important because it gets to the very 3 of how patients evaluate the quality of 4 that they receive.
My mum recently started losing her 5 . Understandably she was very worried. She went for an 6 appointment with an eye specialist at her local NHS hospital. When I telephoned her that evening to see how it went, she replied: “Oh yes, it was 7 . They were all so lovely and kind.” Could she now see No. Had they been able to 8 it No. In fact, the clinic was running late and she’d had to 9 for an hour to see the nurse, and three hours to see the consultant. But that didn’t matter. What mattered to her was that a nurse had met her at the door and helped her to her 10 .
11 , how many times, when asking how things went at the doctor’s, have you heard the 12 ,“Oh, it was awful, he was really 13 .” Not, “Oh, it was awful, he prescribed the wrong 14 , or gave me the wrong treatment.” Patients don’t evaluate the actual medicine that’s practised; it’s the 15 skills of the doctor that determine how they evaluate the care.
