Thousands of years ago, Chinese poet Qu Yuan wrote the poem Tianwen, meaning Quest for Heavenly Truth. He came up with a series of questions about the sky, stars, nature and the world around us. The poem showed his spirit of finding the truth.
Inspired (激励) by the great poet, China named its latest series of planetary exploration missions (行星探测任务) after the poem in 2020. The first one in the series—a Mars exploration mission—has been named Tianwen 1, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said on April 24, 2020, China’s Space Day. This shows China’s wish to explore the universe (宇宙) .
China has made great progress in space exploration. In 1970, China sent its first man-made Earth satellite (卫星), becoming the fifth country in the world to send a man-made satellite independently. Since 2003, China has carried out six Shenzhou manned missions. China’s moon exploration missions—the Chang’e series—started in 2007. In December 2018, China became the first country to send the probe (探测器) Chang’e 4 to the moon’s far side.
The Tianwen series will follow the Shenzhou and Chang’e series and move further into space. The first step is to send a Mars probe, which means the start of China’s exploration of the red planet. The probe is planned to circle around, land on and explore Mars in one mission. It is the first to finish all of these tasks in one mission. The Long March 5 rocket has sent the probe to Mars.
After this mission, China plans to visit Mars again in 2028, aiming to collect soil from the ground of the planet and bring it to Earth. Around 2030, China will explore Jupiter and several small planets.

It is dark. Holmes, Lestrade and I move towards the house. “Let’s wait here,” Holmes says. “We can hide behind these rocks. Watson, go to the house and see what they are doing. Make sure they don’t see you.” I hide behind a wall. I can see Mr. Stapleton and Sir Henry sitting at a table.
Then, Stapleton leaves the room and walks to a shed in the yard. He opens the door and there is a strange noise from inside. After a minute he locks the door and goes back into the house. I hurry back to report everything to Lestrade and Holmes.
There is now a thick white fog over the moor. “The fog is getting thicker,” says Holmes. “This is very serious — Sir Henry must go home soon.”
Suddenly, we hear footsteps. They get closer and we see Sir Henry walking towards us through the fog. Then, we hear something. A terrible animal appears. It is a huge black hound. There is fire coming from its mouth and its huge eyes are glowing.
The hound runs after Sir Henry. Holmes and I both fire our guns. We hit it but the hound doesn’t stop. It jumps on Sir Henry and pushes him to the ground. Holmes points his gun and shoots the hound five times. The giant hound is dead.
Sir Henry is lying on the path. We run to him and find he is alive.
I put my hand on the hound’s glowing face and find my own fingers glow in the dark. “Phosphorous (含磷的),” I say.
We walk towards Merripit House to search for Stapleton. In the house we don’t find him, but we find Mrs. Stapleton tied up in a bedroom. We untie her. When she knows Sir Henry is alive and the hound is dead, she cries, “Thank God!” “Now we have proof, we need Stapleton.” says Holmes.

In a modern world where time is money, how have our reading habits been influenced Are we reading more quickly or do we prefer to read short passages The answer perhaps lies in the kind of text you’re reading.
When we’re reading online, we read quickly to search what we want. Does this mean that as readers we now have far less patience than we used to Not necessarily. Much of this activity is actually skimming or scanning to check whether something is useful or interesting and whether we want to read on. We’ll slow down and take a bit longer to properly read the text if the headline catches our eyes.
For those writing for an online environment, this means finding more useful ways of catching the readers’ eyes. For example, putting the key information at the very beginning makes it more likely that the time-poor website visitors will find what they want.
But what about when we’re reading literature, are the rules still the same The average reader works their way through a piece of an article at no more than about 250—300 words per minute, which is generally a page of text. If you try to read through a novel more quickly, then you start to lose a lot of what makes literature such a pleasure. When we read for pleasure, we are much less focused on picking out useful information or key words. Instead, the language itself is as important as the information mentioned. The longer you spend reading a passage, the more vivid a picture you create in your mind.
Sometimes an escape from the fast-moving Internet Age is just what we need, so maybe it’s time to slow down and lose yourself in a good book.
18.Why do people read quickly online according to the text
A.Because people are becoming less patient than they used to.
B.Because people think the passages on the Internet are boring.
C.Because they need to save time for printing what they want.
D.Because people want to decide whether to read on quickly.
19.How does the writer organize Paragraph 3
A.By giving an example. B.By asking questions.
C.By listing numbers. D.By showing facts.
20.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “vivid”
A.lonely B.ugly C.lively D.daily
21.What would the writer most probably like to do according to the last paragraph
A.Draw some pictures on the book. B.Enjoy himself while reading slowly.
C.Write an article of 250—300 words. D.Read through a novel very quickly.

You might ask, “What was at the top of that mountain ” I ask you, “What would you have wanted to find ”

Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws(吸管)and bags. More and more businesses are switching(转换)to paper products as an alternative(可供选择的事物). Paper is considered by many to be better than plastic. However, it is harmful to the environment, too.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as you know, can reduce carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere(大气). They can slow down climate change. An increase in the use of paper bags can cause more deforestation(毁林).
Secondly, the production of paper things requires more energy and water. About 10 percent more energy and four times as much water is used to produce a paper bag than a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process(过程)than to make a new paper bag. Products made from recycled paper are also often short-lived.
Furthermore, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more fuel to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while only one truck is needed to transport the same number of plastic bags. The increased weight also leads to a larger amount of waste once the bags are thrown away.
Paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are more expensive than plastic products. A paper straw costs about 5 to 12 cents, while a plastic one usually costs only about 2 cents. The most environment-friendly solution(解决办法)is to avoid single-use things altogether. Products like glass water bottles and steel straws can be used over and over again. They are much better than either paper products or plastic products. Through increasing the use of these items, you can greatly reduce your throwaway waste and truly make our earth a greener place!
36.What can trees do to the environment
A.They can make carbon dioxide levels lower in the air.
B.They can improve climate quickly.
C.They can cause more deforestation in the end.
D.They can provide materials for paper products.
37.From Paragraph 4, we can know that ________.
A.plastic products are much better than paper ones
B.paper products are easy to transport
C.one truck is needed to transport two million plastic bags
D.plastic products often lead to a larger amount of a waste
38.Which is the following should people use in order to protect the environment
A.Recycled paper bags. B.Steel knives and forks.
C.Strong plastic chairs. D.Single-use cups.
39.What is the purpose of the passage
A.To push for an end to plastic straws and bags.
B.To tell readers the disadvantages of paper products.
C.To push the use of environment-friendly products which can be recycled.

They came to where an old man sat. He was selling dirty pieces of cloth, smelly old bones, and all kinds of old and useless things. As they watched, two old women and an old man, equally dirty, smelly, and ugly came into the shop. They carried large bags.
“Come and sit by the fire,” the shopkeeper said. “Tell me what you have to sell me.”
“Nothing a dead man will miss,” the first woman said with a nasty laugh.
“If he wanted to keep them after he was dead, why wasn’t he a good man when he was alive If he had been, he would have had someone to look after him. He would not have died alone.”
“That’s very true,” said the second woman, putting a few clothes on the floor. “He got the death he deserved.” She pointed at the clothes. “What will you give me for those, Joe ” She asked the shopkeeper, adding, “I did no wrong taking them from the dead man’s house.”
The shopkeeper looked at everything the woman wanted to sell him and put a price on it. Then he added everything up. The final amount was very small.

I always loved looking at this hidden lane (小路) as I drove my children to school. The lane is easily overlooked because it’s between a pizza restaurant and a house. If you don’t take the time to look to the left at the stop sign, you’ll miss it.
As you can see, the tree-lined lane is pretty in every season. I have pictures of the four seasons hanging in my home and at my workplace. Many people have asked me about them. When I tell them where I took the pictures, they are always surprised. Most of them probably never slow down from their busy lives to notice the scenery so close to their home.
Our family moved to Gibsonia, Pennsylvania more than 25 years ago, and we love living there. Gibsonia has beautiful hills and many, many huge old oak trees.
I adore the natural beauty of the countryside throughout the year, from the heavy snows of winter to the bright new greens of spring, and I hope to always live where the seasons change.
Now my children have grown up and left home. My husband Ron and I can take many drives together, especially in the fall. We always go to the countryside. We love to discover the natural scenes along the roads in the countryside. Western Pennsylvania is a beautiful area with mountains, lakes and rivers, and we hope to discover more natural beauty there.
As I get older, I value the peace and beauty of the countryside even more. This collection of photos of my favorite country lane shows that if you take the time to look around, you will always discover something wonderful, no matter where you are. What an amazing country we live in!

Do you like to eat out and treat yourself to delicious food Many people are used to choosing hearty (丰盛的), fat-filled dishes and high-sugar desserts, which are not easily cooked at home, though they may be unhealthy.
According to Economic Daily, low-fat and high-fiber meals have become popular in China’s restaurants and online delivery platforms. The recent rise of light meals gives diners a smarter choice. Restaurants serving light meals have increased from just 600 in 2017 to more than 3, 500 in 2018. According to a report by Meituan, a major online food platform, the number of light meals ordered online also rose 75 percent from last year.
Having a light meal, however, doesn’t mean eating only vegetables. Different from the meat-free lifestyle, a light meal avoids oily, salty and spicy food. Instead, it contains things like boiled meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Healthy nutrients (营养成分) are the theme of the light meal. These dishes are useful for keeping healthy and controlling your weight. That’s probably why so many people, especially millennials (千禧一代), are into them. Diners see it as “a great way to avoid getting fat”.
Zou Jing, a college teacher in Wuhan, shared a picture of her lunch: a mixture of beef, eggs, corn, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. She told China Daily, “After eating several light meals, I felt my appetite (胃口) has shrunk. I now prefer light meals.”
These changes in eating behavior are connected to deeper changes in how people think about food. People are more interested in diet quality, not numbers, which is important for both weight control and health. So the next time you have a party with friends, try a light meal. It will satisfy not only your stomachs, but maybe your hearts.

The Horsetail Fall (瀑布) is one of Yosemite National Park’s most amazing views. Around the second week of February, the setting sun hits the Horsetail Fall at just the right angle (角度) to light the upper parts of the waterfall. And when conditions are right, the Horsetail Fall becomes orange and red at sunset. It is like red-hot lava (熔岩) pouring down from the top of the El Capitan. So, it got the name “firefall”.
The firefall is a perfect match of the weather, the fall, the time and the watching place. It usually appears on dry, warm and cloudless days. There must be enough flowing water to make a firefall too. So there must be enough snow on the mountain top, and it turns into water on warm afternoons.
The sun goes to the best place before the fall in late February. And the best time to watch the fall is 5 to 15 minutes before the sunset. Only at this time can visitors see the firefall. The El Capitan Picnic Area is the best place to watch, because it is close to the fall and is perfect to set up cameras and tents.
Every year in February, thousands of photographers come to watch the firefall. Although the view may appear just minutes before sunset, many of them have to come hours earlier to get a right place to set their cameras in time. “I’m just saying that the Yosemite Firefall is something you don’t want to miss during the winter,” says Kate Moore, a traveller and the lead content creator for .

A.It lasts for half an hour before the sunset.
B.It usually appears on wet, warm and cloudy days.

Now more and more people who want to learn a new language turn to mobile apps for help. While these language learning apps allow users to study a new language anywhere at any time, how effective(有效的) are they
That is a question Shawn Loewen, a professor at Michigan State University (MSU), is trying to answer. He recently made a study focusing on Babbel, a popular language learning app, to see if it really worked at teaching a new language.
“Millions around the world are already using language learning apps, but few studies have researched whether they can help improve one’s speaking skills,”Loewen said. “There are almost no other studies that have looked at mobile language learning apps. So, this study is very important to the field.”
In the study, 85 students at MSU used Babbel for 12 weeks to learn Spanish. At the beginning of the study, the students took a test to assess(评价) their speaking, vocabulary and grammar in Spanish. After 12 weeks, the 54 students who completed all study requirements took the same test again to see how much knowledge they had gained.
The study showed that nearly all the students who completed the requirements improved their Spanish language knowledge and ability to communicate after 12 weeks of using Babbel.
“On the whole, learners in this study increased their oral proficiency(口语能力).” Loewen said. “These results show that Babbel not only helps teach knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, but also speeds up the development of oral communication skills.”
Also, learning gains in oral proficiency, grammar and vocabulary were connected with how much time students spent using the app. 59% of students improved speaking skills by at least one level in an American foreign language proficiency assessing system. The percentage of learners who improved rose even higher among those who spent more time using the app. For those who studied at least six hours, 69% increased at least one level, rising to 75% for those who studied for at least 15 hours.
62.What does Loewen say about his app study
A.It is based on a lot of published studies.
B.It compares many language learning apps.
C.It answers a question about learning new languages.
D.It may be the first to study if apps help language learning.
63.What did the students do in the study
A.They learnt Spanish in class using Babbel.
B.They tried using different language learning apps.
C.Some of them took two tests before and after 12 weeks
D.Some of them finished their study requirements in 24 weeks.
64.What did Loewen’s study find about Babbel
A.It can be useful for just some of its users.
B.It effectively helps teach a new language.
C.It might be the best Spanish learning tool so far.
D.It does better in improving skills than knowledge.
65.What do the numbers in the last paragraph show
A.The relationship between app use time and progress.
B.The disadvantages of using language learning apps.
C.The big differences in students’ learning habits.
D.The difficulties of learning a new language.
