When taking an elevator,do you often push the "close" button? You hope by pushing it,the elevator door will close faster. But what if the button is actually fake(假的)?
Karen Penafiel is the executive director of the US National Elevator Industry. She said that elevators' "close" buttons are a complete trick,at least in the US,and that doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you push.
In the 1990s,the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US.It means all elevators have to stay open long enough to allow disabled people to enter.Only US firefighters and elevator workers can really use the buttons with special keys.
But the buttons aren't completely useless.According to psychologists(心理学家),fake buttons can make you feel better. They give you a sense of control that can help reduce(减少) stress. That's why some other buttons in our lives are fake, too.
For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats(温控器).People may feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace. You were told that traffic light buttons could help make the traffic signals(信号) faster. But they may not work either.
However, even when people know these little "white lies",they still push fake buttons. As long as the doors finally close,it seems worthy.
John Kounios is a psychology professor at Drexel University in the US.He told The New York Times that he always pushes the traffic light buttons. "Well,I've got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not push the button on the off?Maybe it will work."

The British are known for their sense of humor. However,it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example,if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain,he might say,"It's a little damp(潮湿的)outside."Or,if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person loudly, people might say,"He isn't exactly friendly."Understatement is often used in unpleasant situations or to make another person look silly.Understatement plays an important part in British humor.
Another key to understanding British humor is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen in everyday life. For example, they laugh when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes on people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy Mr.Bean is a good example of this kind of humor.
Mr.Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990.Mr.Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh.Perhaps what makes Mr.Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world will never do.
Mr.Bean is popular in many countries around the world because people do not have to speak English to understand the humor.Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humor.

I really love this job because I enjoy working with small children.I also think my work is very important. But there was a time when I thought I would never have a job like this.
I wasn't the best student because I didn't do much schoolwork.Just before I left school,I started thinking what I might do and found that there's not much I could do.I thought I wasn't that kind of person to have a job.
I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls for a family. It wasn't difficult at first. But problems began when I agreed to live in,so that my owner could go out to work in the evenings.I got very tired because I had too many late nights and early mornings with children.
One Sunday,I was in the park with the children, and met Mary who was my classmate.I told her about my job.She said that I should get a qualification(资格证书) if I wanted to work with children. And it would help me learn more skills to look after children better without feeling too tired. .I decided to take part—time lessons. So I left the family. All the lessons helped me look after children better and helped me get a job at a kindergarten(幼儿园).
Now I have a job as a teacher at a kindergarten.I should be thankful to Mary.

Most Chinese parents have great expectations(期望) for their children. When children are born, their parents have planned everything for them.It is common for parents to want their children to be successful. However, many children in China are unhappy. They live a planned life and are asked to their parents' dreams.
In my opinion, there are two sides of parents' expectations. On the one hand, the expectations can encourage children to work harder for a better life.According to some studies, whether a child will be successful or not depends mostly on his or her parents' expectations. But on the other hand, unrealistic(不切实际) expectations can be harmful to children.Every child has his or her own thoughts and feelings.Parents' expectations can take children's freedom away.Wise parents allow their children to have some freedom. They encourage their children to do things they like to do and never only care about their grades.
My parents' expectations for me are to be happy, kind and healthy. They never put too much pressure on me,so I live a happy life. However,I have my own dreams.I keep working hard, though my parents do not want me to do so.I will never give up because my parents always encourage me when I am in trouble. In a word,I think parents' expectations are necessary. However, parents should not give their children too much pressure.Instead, they should give them enough freedom.Parents must make sure their expectations for their children are realistic so that their children will not lose their self—confidence(自信).

While most TV stations try to catch people's eyes by producing star-dubbed (明星荟萃的) reality shows,Henan TV has made it in a different way.
In the year of 2021,Henan TV produced seven dances reflecting traditional culture, such as Rhapsody on the Luo River Goddess (《洛神水赋》),and Dragon Boat Festival and Guardian Warriors of Longmen (《龙门金刚》),which won millions of tons of likes.
"The seven dances have received nearly 30 billion hits on social media," said Yao Wei,the director of the TV station. "It's a huge success for Henan TV."
Last month,Yao was invited to talk about how the TV station had produced the dances at a 3-day meeting. "The dances had an emotional influence on those younger people, most of whom are members of Gen Z (people born between 1995 and 2009)," he said.
"The younger generations have grown up with a more open mind. With plenty of chances, they are glad to accept Chinese culture and proud of it," said Yao. "What we need to do is to present Chinese culture and tradition in interesting ways for those young people."
Yao added that Henan TV had been producing shows about traditional culture, such as traditional operas and kung fu,for nearly 30 years.
"To younger people,we are also changing our shows. One of the keys is to produce the dances with strong visual (视觉的) creativity," Yao said. "For example, the latest technology and new stage settings (舞台设置),like underwater scenes, have been used rather than simply telling history in an old-fashioned way."
Another key to successfully winning younger people is the use of social media. "Social media are being shaped and driven by young people. It's a powerful form of communication. When they take a quick scroll (滚屏) through their phones, they easily become interested in an eye-catching video," Yao said.
53. What helped Henan TV win people's hearts according to the passage in 2021? ______

Imagine you're sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens to be one of your favorites. "Oh,that game is not worth the time," one of your friends says. The others agree.Although you enjoy the game quite a lot,not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the group.
You have just experienced what is commonly called peer(同伴)pressure, which forces you to adopt(采用)a certain type of behavior, clothes,or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your "peers".We are all influenced by our peers at any age.As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the influence of peer pressure in different ways.
According to Dr.Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate(准确地)in making decisions on their own and in situations where they have time to think. However,if they make decisions when they lose control over anger or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors(因素)like peers. In a recent study, teen volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around,or in situations where they are extremely angry.
A teen might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it,or get good grades because his or her friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, true friends often encourage each other to study,or try out for sports.
While you are always influenced by those around you,the decision to act or not is up to you. What you have to do first is to tell whether it is negative peer pressure. But what is more important for you is to learn how to deal with it,which makes you mature(成熟的)and confident.

D. Teenagers under peer pressure act like their peers to avoid being refused by them.
59. Which sentence is the best to put in the " ______ "?
A. What is the true meaning of good friends in your eyes?
B. However, peers can also influence teens in a positive way.

An unpleasant smell came into my nose as the bowl of fried stinky tofu (臭豆腐) was placed on the dinner table.I pushed the dish away quickly.
"Come on!Just give it a try!" my grandmother said.
Holding my breath,I unwillingly took a bite (咬了一口).To my surprise, the tofu under the fried skin was warm, soft, and mouth-watering.After that, whenever I visited my grandmother's house,I would rush to the kitchen for the stinky tofu with excitement. It became my favorite dish.
Along with the stinky tofu,I would meet my Uncle Chan on every visit.I never understood my uncle's condition of Down syndrome (唐氏综合征).And I couldn't understand his behavior, either. He often walked around the house, talking to himself.Whenever he appeared,I would run away in fear.
However, one day,my views about my uncle suddenly changed.I was just getting out of my bed when I heard soft steps coming up to the door.It was my uncle. My muscles froze (僵住).He slowly sat next to me and touched my face gently.I saw a beautiful smile on his face.I could not help but smile back.My fear was gone gradually, and my muscles relaxed. For the first time,I could see softness and warmth in his eyes.
My uncle is a lot like the stinky tofu. The outside and inside of the stinky tofu are two completely different worlds.Stinky tofu smells unpleasant outside but feels warm and soft inside.Like stinky tofu,my uncle's Down syndrome made me scared at first. But I learned that deep inside,he has a loving and kind nature.
Nowadays, some people look down upon disabled people and they think the disabled can't live a normal life.As I was unable to see through the outer surface of the tofu, these people are unable to see through the surface of prejudice (偏见).
