It has been two months since I moved to China, but its digital advancement hasn’t stopped impressing me ever since. One of the major things that I cannot imagine living without anymore is mobile payment. There are two major mobile payment apps here, Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both have similar payment features, though WeChat has more like a social media. That’s why I will focus on this “super app”.
So far, I’ve been overwhelmed by how efficient life can be with WeChat. It is present in every aspect of people’s daily life, from paying water and electricity bills, meals, cinema tickets to calling a taxi, following news, and chatting with friends. Most merchants have adopted it, from tiny local street food stalls to high-end(高端的)stores. A cashier may be surprised if you do not pay with WeChat or Alipay at the grocers or in restaurants. And it seems like the entire payment industry has encouraged this shift to mobile payment, equipping payment terminals with QR code scanners to simplify payments. Mobile payments are so common here that I realize that I can perfectly survive if I forget my wallet at home one day because most days I just don’t take it out of my bag!
As mentioned earlier, WeChat is also a major social media platform with about one billion daily users, which is more than the entire population of European Union. So I have to say Chinese technological and digital development is a real miracle.
4. What does the underlined word “overwhelmed” mean in paragragh 2

In its response to reports that its Kindle business is exiting the Chinese mainland market, Amazon said consumers can still buy Kindle devices through third-party online and offline retailers (零售), while some of its devices have been sold out in the mainland. No one knows whether consumers bought all its products or the company produced too few, but it’s obvious that Kindle has shut down several online sales channels, forcing many in China to put their Kindles up for sale.
The domestic (国内的) digital reading market is growing rapidly. The reason for the industry’s growth even as Kindle declines is the ubiquitous smartphone. Nearly every adult has one smartphone in China. In fact, all electronic devices that specialize in single functions are fading out. Even tablets account for only one-tenth of mobile devices sales because one cannot use one to make a phone call. Besides, Kindle itself has problems. The electronic books that are available are expensive, while Kindle Unlimited, a program that allows customers to read any number of e-books for a monthly subscription fee, seldom includes new titles.
In a word, while electronic reading is a booming market, the market for electronic reading devices is shrinking. That’s why many joke that the only function left for a Kindle device is to act as a cover for a steaming cup of instant noodles.
Many users are saddened and hope Kindle doesn’t disappear for good. Maybe Kindle can find a way to reinvent itself and continue serving its customers.;
8. What conclusion can we draw from the first paragraph
A.Digital reading at home isn’t as popular as before.
B.Some Kindle sales routes online have been closed.
C.All Kindle devices are sold out in the Chinese market.
D.Consumers are able to buy Kindle products on the Internet directly at present.;
9. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.High-end. B.Expensive. C.Good-looking. D.Common.;
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards Kindle’s disappearance from the Chinese market
A.Objective. B.Pitiful. C.Sad. D.Worried.;
11. What’s the text mainly about
A.The history of Kindle business. B.Electronic reading is booming.
C.The applications of smartphones. D.Kindle must reinvent itself to bounce back.
D
Have you ever had the urge to open a book and stick your nose straight into the pages The smell of old books can refresh any book lovers. We don’t know why, but it is just pleasant to us.
Describing the smell can be a challenge. And mere adjectives will likely be of little use to future generations of historians trying to document, understand or reproduce the scent (气味) of slowly decaying (腐朽) books. Now, that task may have just gotten easier thanks to the Historic Book Odor Wheel.
In one experiment, researchers asked visitors at the historic library to characterize the scents they smelled. All the visitors selected words like “woody”, “smoky” and “earthy” from the list, and described the smell’s intensity and perceived pleasantness. In another experiment, the study authors presented visitors to the Birmingham Museum with eight smells — one of which was an unlabeled historic book scent and seven were non-bookish, such as coffee, chocolate, fish market and dirty clothes. The researchers then had those museumgoers describe the historic book smell. The top two responses Chocolate and coffee. “You tend to use familiar associations to describe smells when they are unlabeled,” study author Cecilia Bembibre says.
The team even analyzed the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the book and the library. Using the data from the chemical analysis and visitors’ smell descriptions, the researchers created the Historic Book Odor Wheel to document the “historic library smell”. Main categories, such as “sweet/spicy”, fill the inner circle of the wheel; descriptors, such as “chocolate/cream”, fill the middle; and the chemical compounds likely to be the smelly source, like furfural, fill the outer circle.
The researchers want the book odor wheel to be a tool that “untrained noses” can use to identify smells and the compounds causing them, which could address conservators’ concerns about material composition and historic paper conservation. And hopefully, smells of the past can be reproduced in the lab someday and museums and historians can use it to reconstruct a past we can no longer smell.;
12. What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph
A.A strange reading habit. B.Addiction to reading books.
C.A dislike for smelling books. D.Fascination for smells of books.;
13. How do people usually describe unlabeled smells
A.By referring to familiar items. B.By using adjectives to label them.
C.By linking them with food smells. D.By analyzing chemical components.;
14. What is the function of the “Historic Book Odor Wheel”
A.To characterize smells. B.To store book smells.
C.To collect history books. D.To test different scents.;
15. What is the potential future application of the study
A.Creating a whole new scent.
B.Sharpening sensory perceptions.
C.Restoring smells of historic documents.
D.Extracting components of “old book smell”.

There Are No Vans
To me, what Thanksgiving really means is giving good thanks, not eating turkey.By the time I was 18 I had created my Thanksgiving ritual (惯例).I would go out shopping and buy enough food for one or two families.Then I would dress like a delivery boy, go to the poorest neighborhood and just knock on a door, and would always include a note saying “All that I ask in return is that you take good enough care of yourself so that someday you can do the same thing for someone else.” I have received more from this annual ritual than I have from any amount of money I’ve ever earned, especially one such experience in New York City.
Several years ago I was in New York City with my newly married wife during Thanksgiving.She was sad because we were not with our family.Normally she would be home decorating the house for Christmas, but we were stuck here in a hotel room.I said, “Honey, look, why don’t we decorate some lives today instead of some trees ” When I told her what I always do on Thanksgiving, she got excited.I said, “Let’s go someplace where we can really appreciate who we are, what we are able to do and what we can really give.Let’s go to the poor neighborhood Harlem and feed some people there in need.We’ll go buy enough food for six or seven families for 30 days.We’ve got enough.Let’s go do it!”
We started by getting a van (货车), but there seemed no vans in all of New York City.The rent-a-car places were all out of vans.My wife was disappointed, and I said, “Look, the bottom line is that if we want something, we can make it happen! All we have to do is take action.There are plenty of vans here in New York City.Look down at the street.Do you see all those vans Let’s go get one!” My wife agreed and we took action.

作文
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, our daily life has changed greatly. Because of the necessity of keeping social distance, I no longer hang out with my friends as often as before. In fear of the spread of virus, I wear masks every day, which makes me feel distant from others. In spite of the inconvenience, there is something I hope I can keep after the pandemic. Washing hands often is the first thing I should stick to, because personal hygiene is essential to our health. Second, stay with families often. During the lockdown period, I had no choice but to stay home, which gave me the chance to enjoy quality time with my families. That’s really an unforgettable experience.
COVID-19 pandemic will be a history, but there is something that we can learn from it and pass them down.
We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street. I learned something about New York drivers that day: They don’t stop; they speed up. We’d go over, knock on the window and the driver would roll it down, looking at us in alarm, and I’d ask if he would drive us to Harlem so we could help some people. Every time the driver would look away quickly, furiously roll up the window and pull away without saying anything. My wife was ready to give up, but I said, “It’s the law of averages:somebody is going to say yes.”
Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes.We were wild with joy and climbed onto the van. Upon arrival, he led us to a store where we bought lots of food and some baskets. Together we packed them up, carried them onto the van and went to buildings where there were even people living without electricity.It was a truly fulfilling experience to make even a small difference. Miracles like this happen every day—even in a city where “there are no vans.”
