An National Health Service (NHS) study shows that after a five-day training course, nurses and psychology (心理学) graduates can treat depression as well as expert therapists (治疗专家). A cheap talking therapy, known as behavioural activation (BA), was just as effective as the gold-standard treatment, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) (认知行为疗法), in easing even serious depression.
David Richards, professor of mental health services research at the University of Exeter, who led the study, said, “Our findings challenge the advantage of CBT, the leading evidence-based psychological therapy for depression. BA should be a frontline treatment for depression in the UK.”
The NHS is attempting to offer talking therapy to 600,000 more people a year by 2020 under a plan to improve mental health care, and bosses are likely to welcome cheaper choices at a time when finances are tight.
BA aims to help people with depression by changing how they act, encouraging them to deal with problems through more positive activities and avoiding ones that make the problem worse. CBT encourages people to challenge their thoughts to avoid negative beliefs.
The study offered 440 patients either CBT or BA, and a year later two thirds of both groups said that symptoms were less than half as bad as they had been.
In the NHS, BA is likely to be offered by either nurses or psychology graduates with some mental health experience.
Liz England, of the Royal College of GPs, said, “Anything that makes it easier for our patients to get psychological therapies is something to be welcomed.”

Much of our health depends on what we eat. We all know about the benefits of eating properly for our physical health, but food - and cooking it - is proving to be good for our mental health as well.
Some people are now advocating the healthful value of cooking food. It’s not just about the end result but the experience someone goes through. Dr Mark Salter, a consultant psychiatrist, told the BBC, “Baking and cooking are good ways to help patients develop planning skills, short-term memory and social skills - all of which suffer in mental illness.” TV chef and author Nadiya Hussain also agrees that cooking is great for improving our mind. She says, “Baking is always about healing... It’s never really been only about getting a cake.” And she thinks that baking is an important tool for our socialization and mental health.
Certainly, creating some delicious food has helped some of us get through the recent lockdown. It has given us something to do and helped take our mind off annoying things. People say that kneading dough (揉面团) to make bread, for example, has given them a sense of calm and control. Research has shown that doing creative tasks, like cooking, makes us feel happier. Nicole Farmer, who studies how food impacts our biology, behaviour and mental health, says, “cooking represents the shared human experience of food, and nurturing people through food, so I think that’s an opportunity for immediate positive emotions, which benefit our mental health.”
Of course, cooking can be a very sociable activity and a rewarding experience. Hopefully, as we start to mix with friends and family again, we can enjoy the benefits once more and put us all in the right frame of mind.
28.What is the function of the first paragraph
A.To add extra relevant materials.
B.To summarize the whole passage.
C.To set an example of healthy eating.

B.People who suffer mental illness benefit less in cooking.

D.Cooking with friends or family can relax our mind.

High-pitched and yet distinct, the sound of a voice calling the name “Amy” is unmistakable. But this isn't a human cry—it's the voice of a killer whale called Wikie.
New research reveals that orcas are able to imitate human speech, saying words such as "hello", "one, two" and “bye bye”. The study also shows that the creatures are able to copy unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas.
Writing in the journal Biological Sciences, researchers from institutions in Germany, UK, Spain and Chile, describe how they carried out the latest research with Wikie, a 14-year-old female orca living in an aquarium in France.
After first brushing up Wikie's grasp of the “copy” command, she was trained to imitate three familiar orca sounds made by her 3-year-old Moana. Wikie was then additionally exposed to five orca sounds she had never heard before, including noises sounding like a creaking door. Finally, Wikie was exposed to a human making three of the orca sounds, as well as six human sounds, including “hello”, “Amy”, “ah ha”, “one, two” and “bye bye”.
The team found that Wikie was often quickly able to copy the sounds, whether from an orca or a human, with all of the novel noises copied within 17 trials. What's more, two human sounds and all of the human-produced orca sounds were managed on the first attempt—although only one human sound "hello" was correctly produced more than 50% of the time on subsequent trials.
The creatures are already known for their ability to copy the movements of other orcas, with some reports suggesting they can also copy the sounds of bottlenose dolphins and sea lions after several trials.
Scientists say the discovery helps to cast light on how different groups of wild killer whales have ended up with distinct accents, adding weight to the idea that they are the result of imitation between orcas.
32.What is the author's main purpose in writing the text
A.To analyze orcas' speech abilities. B.To highlight the conservation of the orca.
C.To inform us of orcas' ability to imitate sounds. D.To convince us of the intelligence of the orca.
33.What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph
A.The process of the research. B.The outcome of the research.
C.The purpose of the research. D.The significance of the research.
34.Which of the following was the easiest for Wikie to copy
A.The six human sounds. B.All the new orca sounds.
C.Human-produced orca sounds. D.Dolphin and sea lion sounds.
35.What may the discovery help explain
A.Why orcas imitate human speech. B.Why orcas have different accents.
C.How orcas copy others' movements. D.How orcas communicate with others.

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on neighbouring farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious disagreement in forty years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch.
Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
One morning, there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. I'm looking for a few days' work," he said. Perhaps you have a few jobs here and there. Could I help you
"Yes," said John. "I do have a job for you. Look across the small stream at that farm. That's my neighbor. In fact, it's my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow(草地)between us and he took his bulldozer(推土机)there and now there is a stream between us. Well, he may have done this to annoy me but I' 11 do better. See that pile of wood by the bam (谷仓)? I want you to build a fence —an 8-foot-high fence—so I won't need to see his place anymore."
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and hole-digger and I' 11 be able to do a job that pleases you."
The older brother had to go to the town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get everything ready and then he left. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing and nailing. At sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John* s eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped.

The subway system in San Francisco serves the transportation needs of about five million residents, with 45 stations across a dozen cities and towns in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are a total of four lines that are known by color: yellow, orange, red and blue. All lines travel through San Francisco, and service runs from 5:00 a.m. to midnight. An interesting fact is that only one third of the stations are below street level; the rest are either at street level or ravel high above the freeway. The average speed of the trains is 35miles per hour, but they can go up to 80 miles an hour. The cost to ride the trains depends on how far you want to go. Many people who live in the suburbs take the train into San Francisco to go to work. This means that the system is very crowded from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., but outside these times, the subway system is not very busy. This can be great if you want to get a seat, but it also means that there are fewer trains. During rush hour, trains come every 5-10 minutes, but in the middle of the day and late at night, trains cone every 20-30 minutes.

根据第二段“New research reveals that orcas are able to imitate human speech, saying words such as "hello", "one, two" and “bye bye”. The study also shows that the creatures are able to copy unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas.(新的研究表明,虎鲸能够模仿人类的语言,说诸如“你好”、“一、二”和“再见”之类的话。研究还表明,这种生物能够复制其他虎鲸发出的陌生声音)”结合文章介绍了这项研究开展的过程以及这项研究的意义,科学家们表示,这一发现有助于阐明不同种群的野生虎鲸是如何最终拥有截然不同的口音的,并进一步证实了它们是虎鲸之间模仿口音的结果的想法。可推知,作者写文章的主要目的是告诉我们虎鲸有模仿声音的能力。故选C。
33.主旨大意题。根据第四段“After first brushing up Wikie's grasp of the “copy” command, she was trained to imitate three familiar orca sounds made by her 3-year-old Moana. Wikie was then additionally exposed to five orca sounds she had never heard before, including noises sounding like a creaking door. Finally, Wikie was exposed to a human making three of the orca sounds, as well as six human sounds, including “hello”, “Amy”, “ah ha”, “one, two” and “bye bye”.(在温习了Wikie对“复制”指令的掌握之后,她被训练模仿三岁的Moana发出的虎鲸的三种熟悉声音。Wikie随后又被暴露在五种她从未听到过的虎鲸声音中,包括吱吱作响的门声。最后,Wikie接触了一个人,这个人发出三种虎鲸的声音,以及六种人类的声音,包括“你好”、“艾米”、“啊哈”、“一、二”和“再见”)”可知,第四段主要讲的是研究的过程。故选A。
根据倒数第三段“The team found that Wikie was often quickly able to copy the sounds, whether from an orca or a human, with all of the novel noises copied within 17 trials. What's more, two human sounds and all of the human-produced orca sounds were managed on the first attempt—although only one human sound "hello" was correctly produced more than 50% of the time on subsequent trials.(研究小组发现,Wikie通常能够迅速复制声音,无论是来自虎鲸还是人类的声音,所有新颖的声音都能在17次试验中复制出来。更重要的是,两次人类的声音和所有人类制作的虎鲸声音在第一次尝试时就被复制了——尽管在随后的试验中,只有一个人类的声音“hello”被正确复制了50%以上)”可知,人类制造的虎鲸声音最容易被Wikie复制。故选C。
35.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Scientists say the discovery helps to cast light on how different groups of wild killer whales have ended up with distinct accents, adding weight to the idea that they are the result of imitation between orcas.(科学家们表示,这一发现有助于阐明不同种群的野生虎鲸是如何最终拥有截然不同的口音的,并进一步证实了它们是虎鲸之间模仿口音的结果的想法)”可知,这一发现可能有助于解释为什么虎鲸有不同的口音。故选B。

67.There was no fence at all. It was a bridge! “A bridge stretched from one side of the creek to the other! John was about to complain about it, when he found his younger brother was coming across the bridge with hands outstretched. You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I have said and done,” said John’s brother. The two brothers met in the middle, taking each other’s hand and hugging each other.
They turned to see the carpenter lift the toolbox onto his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few more days. We have more jobs for you,” said the older brother. “I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but I have many more bridges to build.” Observing the carpenter leaving in the sunset, the two brothers waved grateful goodbye to him. What a thought-provoking story! Every day we have the choice of building a fence or a bridge. One leads to separation and anger while the other leads to openness and friendship, the latter of which makes the situation quite pleasant.(152 words)
