The day had started out as usual for Mrs. Ito until the late afternoon, when the news of the destructive tsunami waves came over the radio.
At last, 12:30 a.m. came as the radio warning had said and nothing happened. She could hear passing people say the tsunami waves must have missed the islands and they laughed as they were returning to their homes. Mrs. Ito went into her living room and looked down the street. It was calm.
Then, a sudden flash-like lighting lit the sky over Hilo Bay and a deafening explosion broke the night’s silence. The first large wave of the tsunami had burst Hilo’s electric power plant. Suddenly, all the lights in Hilo went out.
Next thing Mrs. Ito heard was a rumbling(发出隆隆声) sound. Before she knew it, the wave roared(吼叫) into her house. She was knocked to the floor as her house began to spin (旋转) and finally tore apart(分裂). Terrible shouting and crying sounds came from her neighbors’ homes. Hopelessly, Mrs. Ito caught for anything to stay above water. Suddenly, something heavy fell on her. The floorboards opened up and she became trapped. She used every bit of strength in her body to struggle out of the boards and managed to become free. Then she blacked out.
When she woke up, she found herself being washed back and fourth as the water rose. She couldn’t see anyone else and listened for the sound of ocean waves. There were no waves, so she thought she had to be floating(漂浮) over flooded land. Mrs. Ito carefully tried to stretch her foot to touch bottom but it was too deep. Not knowing how to swim, she hung on tight to her tiny makeshift(临时的) raft(木筏).
At sunrise, she spotted two boats on the horizon(地平线). She saw in the distance a radio station tower light. She remained at peace and kept her head down. She thought that death was just a matter of time away. She thought the people on the boats hadn’t seen her. Then the boats came closer and closer. Mrs. Ito was seen and saved.

The Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) — one of the world’s largest freshwater fish — has been announced extinct. Scientists say the paddlefish, also called the Chinese swordfish, is believed to have a lineage dating back at least 34 million years. With its long nose and mouth, the paddlefish could grow as long as seven meters.
But a research paper recently published in Science of the Total Environment reported the paddlefish was now extinct. The researchers include scientists from the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Britain’s University of Kent and the University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic.
The paper says the paddlefish was announced extinct for two reasons. It said that the fish was not able to survive because of widespread overfishing and damage to its native environment in the Yangtze River.
Researchers discovered 332 different species of fish in the Yangtze River in 2017 and 2018. But they did not find a single Chinese paddlefish. They guessed the fish disappeared between 2005 and 2010. The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish was “a huge loss” to nature.
Pan Wenjing is a forest and ocean expert with Greenpeace East Asia. “The ecology of the Yangtze River is almost in ruins due to human activity in past decades” Pan said. She stressed that China had taken measures to improve the Yangtze’s environment, including a 10-year ban(禁令) on fishing.
After the extinction was reported in the news, some Chinese media and Internet users took a look back at the large creatures. Many people appeared to have not heard of the Chinese paddlefish before it was announced extinct.
“Every time I see the news of another species going extinct, my heart starts to ache,” wrote one Weibo user. “Humans should not live alone on this planet,” the user added.
28. What do we know from Paragraph 3
A. Fishing in the Yangtze River. B. Environment in the Yangtze River.

B. Few people are familiar with the Chinese paddlefish
C. The Chinese paddlefish has been announced extinct

Four years ago, Chinese skater Wu Dajing introduced himself to the skating world by winning a silver medal at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. At this year’s Pyeong Chang Olympics, Wu not only returned, but also made history.
On Feb 22nd, 2018, Wu won the gold medal in the men’s short-track 500-metre race. He set a new world record with a time of 39,584 seconds. He also became the first Chinese man to take home an Olympic short-track gold medal. BBC said Wu’s win was flawless, because he was much faster than all of the other skaters.
“I didn’t give them a chance and I kept my speed from the start,” he told the reporter after the match.
But China’s short-track teams didn’t do well in general at the Games. Chinese skaters in the women’s 500 meters, 3000-metre relay and men’s 1500 meters all failed to take home the gold. Wu was China’s biggest hope, which put a lot of pressure on him. But he proved himself with his great performance.
Wu is now known as a highly talented skater. But things were not always that way. When Wu joined the national team in 2010, he was seen as almost “nothing” compared to gifted skaters like Zhou Yang and Fan Kexin, as his coaches said at the time. Their words made him quite upset. But Wu didn’t want to give up and worked as hard as he could. He practiced skating all year round. He even didn’t return to his hometown for the holidays for 10 years. “I believe in myself,” he told the reporter after his match at the Olympics.
32. At the Pyeong Chang Olympics, Wu Dajing won the gold medal in the men’s short-track ___________race.
A. 500-metre B. 1000-metre C. 1500-metre D. 3000-metre relay
33. What does the underlined word “flawless” mean
A. Ordinary. B. Common. C. Perfect. D. Difficult.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us
A. The national team and coaches regard Wu as a talented skater all the way.
B. Wu kept on practicing skating all year round even in the holidays for 10 years.
C. Zhou Yang and Fan Kexin were more hard-working on skating than Wu Dajing.
D. Because of Wu’s hard work, confidence and strong will he finally succeeded.
35. Which one might be the best title of this passage
A. From Zero to Skating Hero B. Short-track 500-metre Race
C. Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics D. Rising of China’s Bright Skiing Star

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As English learners, you often feel anxious when you have to speak English in front of others. 36 Here are some solutions to help you build confidence in speaking English.
Use a practice and repetition(重复) habit. When something becomes natural to you, you begin to feel confident of doing it. And the only way you can arrive at this “natural” way of doing things is through practice and repetition. 37 So write down what you may talk about and then practise saying it aloud and repeatedly before an English meeting.
38 You may lose confidence when your spoken English is misunderstood by listeners. In most cases, it's because the listeners are not used to your accent or you speak too fast. There is no doubt that speaking slowly is easy to achieve.
Don't run away from uncomfortable situations. It is natural for any human being to avoid uncomfortable situations when possible, but you will build your confidence in the uncomfortable zones. 39
All in all, learning to speak English confidently doesn't happen overnight. 40 As the saying goes, “No pains, no gains.” As long as you make enough efforts, you will surely improve your spoken English, and then you will naturally become confident of speaking English in front of others.
Purposely speak more slowly.
Try to understand your listeners.
It's the same principle as speaking English confidently.
It takes time and you need to make continuous efforts.
It is common to make some mistakes when you speak English.
However, going from an unconfident speaker to a confident one is possible.
The secret is to be fully prepared, and then you will overcome the uncomfortable situations.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation(假期) like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs(青蛙) and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the path so that you don’t get lost!" "OK! " my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed(混合) to create a magic(神奇的) scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

读后续写范文
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. This unexpected appearance frighteded my horse, making it run wildly. Scared, I screamed and held the horse tightly to avoid falling off. After what seemed a long time, the horse stopped before a river. Luckily, my dad also came up. But it was already dark and there was nothing in sight except the river and shadows of trees and mountains. Obviously, we got lost.
Paragraph 2:
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. Pulling out the smart phone, we found there was no signal at all! It was so quiet that we could hear the sound of the river and crying of some insects. My dad decided we went back along the previous track slowly, but with dark trees everywhere, it was really hard to find the right way. Half an hour later, no farmhouse or light in sight at all, and everything looked hopeless. Suddenly, we heard someone calling in the distance. “It's Uncle Paul!” We became excited and cried back without any hesitation. Finally, we were back home. Needless to say, we ate a late dinner.
