Unit 3 Fascinating Parks 作业
一、阅读理解
Dear Editor (编辑) Buddy,
On my way to work every morning I drive by a farm where I can see some horses off the woods. They are there every morning no matter how cold or rainy or windy it is. There is a shed (牲口棚) on the farm, but it doesn’t seem that the horses are ever taken into the shed. Is this right I don’t think horses should be treated (对待) like that.
Sam
Dear Sam,
Thanks for taking an interest in those horses. The care of horses is different from that of cats and dogs. Think of wild horses that spend their whole lives outdoors finding food and shelter (遮蔽) on their own. The point is that horses don’t require as much shelter as other farm animals. However, that doesn’t mean that they don’t need shelter.
It is hard to tell from your letter whether the situation for those horses is unacceptable. Do you know the people who own the horses well enough to just talk to them Maybe they will tell you that the horses do go in the shed at night. If direct contact (联系) is not a choice and you can see that the horses’ situation is poor, then call 911 and report it.
If you just can’t see enough to prove such a report, call the Oswego County Humane Society at 207-1070 for help from the Large Animal Assistance Project (LAAP). A volunteer from the project will help solve the problem.
Speaking of volunteers, since you appear to be a horse lover, why not talk to the LAAP about volunteer opportunities for yourself The project always needs knowledgeable horse people to help.

It was the 2015 “super storm” in New South Wales that restored my faith in people.
During a break in the weather, I stupidly decided to drive into town to buy some groceries. However, as I left the supermarket and drove back, the weather took a turn for the worse. 21 Having nowhere to go, I spotted a young man in his front yard assessing the situation. He quickly waved to me to come and park in his driveway. 22 .
The man, who introduced himself as Trent, then invited me to wait inside his house with his wife, Kayti and their two daughters. When the hail stopped, I shook Trent’s hand and kissed Kayti goodbye. 25 I was very moved by their kindness and it renewed my faith in people.
As I went out the door, I asked Trent for two of his business cards. My father has since called to offer him a job as a clerk at his company.

“Ready to pick lychees (荔枝), Hannah ” Daddy asks as we pull into my grandmothers driveway.
“Ready.” I smile and get out of the car.
Daddy closes his car door. He walks to the lychee tree in my grandmother’s front yard. “Hello, Family Tree,” Daddy says.
There Daddy goes, treating that tree like it’s a person. I’m smiling at Daddy when the door opens and my grandmother shows up. I call her “Nainai.” a Chinese word for “Grandma.” Nainai used to live in China, in a province called Guangdong. That’s where she learned to grow lychees.
“Hungry for lychees. Hannah ” Nainai asks.
I shake my head. I don’t want them. Lychees look different from all the fruits I like.
I laugh happily as Daddy climbs up the tree. The lychees are many and most are up high. After Nainai passes Daddy the cutter he cuts the end of a branch (树枝) heavy with fruit.
“Daddy! Why are you cutting the tree you love ”
Daddy smiles. “Don’t worry. Cutting the ends of branches doesn’t hurt Family Tree. It makes her stronger.”
He cuts down more branches, and Nainai and I pick their fruit. Each lychee looks strange to me. Nainai eats a lychee. With a smile I drop my lychees into the boxes we will take to relatives. Nainai shares with everyone in our family.
“Are you almost done ” I ask Daddy.
“Not yet,” Daddy says. The branch he stands on seems not to support him.
“Isn’t it dangerous up there ”
“Nonsense.” Daddy picks a lychee. “You won’t hurt me will you, Family Tree ”
There Daddy goes again.
“Plunk (扑通一声)!” say the lychees when they hit the bottom of a box. Then I hear a loud sound of a branch breaking into pieces. Nainai starts shouting, and I walk around to face the tree. There’s Daddy on the ground again. Near his feet is a broken branch!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Dear Mike,
I can’t wait to share a piece of good news with you. A Chinese folk culture theme park has just been built in my hometown. I think this is a great chance for you to learn more about Chinese culture, so I’d like to invite you to visit the park with me.
We can meet at the bus station at 8 next Saturday morning and then set off for there. During the visit, we will learn about Chinese folk culture and experience various forms of folk art, through which we can see Chinese history changes and great society development, especially Chinese countryside. When we visit it, we had better behave well and follow the related rules and order. Don’t smoke, make noises or throw rubbish anywhere. I am sure you can harvest and benefit from this visit.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Lihua
47. Daddy says, “The branch broke so slowly and lowered me softly down.” He points to where the low-hanging branch used to connect to the tree and laughs uneasily. Nainai is worried. Daddy gives a thumbs-up. “I’m good.” He hands me a lychee.“A special gift from Family Tree.” I’m nervous to taste the lychee, but I don’t want to make Daddy sad. I take the lychee’s ugly skin off and look at the soft fruit before I eat. Then I try it. The lychee sure tastes sweet.
Daddy leans against the tree and asked “Do you like it now that you’ve tasted it ” Instead of answering, I take another lychee from a box. This time, Daddy laughs at me. “Family Tree’s got a few surprises up in her branches, but she always grows good lychees.” I smile as I eat my second lychee. Then I touch our tree softly like Daddy does as if I finally understand the meaning of family. “Delicious lychees, Family Tree.”
