Li Yu Mrs. Liu seemed nervous and shy meeting us on the first day. That impressed(使印象深刻) me a lot. But later, the class really likes working with her. She’s kind and patient, and she explains English grammar so clearly that even I can understand it! Maybe she goes a bit slowly for the faster students, but for me it’s wonderful! It was the last day of the school year. The classroom was filled with excitement. When our teacher, Mr. Johnson, walked in, holding a CD player, everyone’s face lit up with a smile. We knew that this wasn’t going to be another normal day, but a special one.
“Please calm down and sit,” said Mr. Johnson. “I’m glad everyone’s here for the final reading test of the year.” When everyone cried, Mr. Johnson laughed, saying it was just a joke. Then he reminded us that we still had a job to do. “You need to clean out your desks and put all your things into your backpacks,” he added gently.
As we began our task, Mr. Johnson turned on the CD player. The lively music made the room feel like a party. Some of us started singing along with the music, others were dancing around their desks while they were cleaning them out. During the junior high school life, I had an unforgettable learning experience. As an exchange student, I studied in France for two years. I remember the first time I took a class in the chemistry lab, I was surprised to find that students were fully “armed”. Everyone was wearing goggles (护目镜) and gloves, because keeping safe is important for science lab class.
My chemistry teacher Mrs. Louise often gave us the instruction paper the night before the lab class and let us read it. In the class, she first went over the steps and then divided us into groups of two to do the experiments (实验). What was special was that for every lab class, Mrs. Louise changed students’ lab partners to make them work with different classmates.
The class was often filled with laughter and screams (尖叫). We once tried to burn the chemicals and watch the colors of the flames (火焰). Different chemicals produced different colors of flames, including bright orange and dark green. Many students were surprised. “Wow! That’s so beautiful!” they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures, posted them online and sent them to their friends. Mrs. Louise didn’t get angry with us at all for our “noises”. She herself even took photos with us!
After finishing an experiment we had to write a lab report. If we made a big mistake in the experiment, we needed to analyze (分析) why it happened and what we should do to avoid it next time. The lab reports were very important. They made up around 25% of our term grade.

According to the new curriculum standard(课程标准) for labor education in compulsory(强制的;义务的) education made by the government, students in primary and middle schools have at least one course every week on basic household skills such as cooking.
Cooking should be considered as art just like any other activity that requires skills and knowledge. It is often said that students are supposed to learn scientific facts as well as how to prepare meals. The following will explain why cooking should be taught in schools.
1.Cooking is an important skill in life. Schools are supposed to teach knowledge to the students so that they can lead successful independent lives when they are out of school. Also, they can step into the world knowing how to make a living.
2.Cooking helps discover the future career. When schools offer cooking lessons, students will show an interest in cooking and might take it as a career. This will give them the chance to perfect their basic skills and be creative in the kitchen. 3.Cooking avoids wasting money. Students used to spend a lot of money on ready-made food, while in the real sense they can prepare a nice meal with lower cost by buying the required ingredients.
Some students talk about their experience about the cooking classes.
Michael: By learning cooking skills, I can learn how to take care of myself and live independently. For example, I can cook eggs while my parents are busy with their work. Sometimes I can prepare meals for them. Linda: I made chicken by myself yesterday. First, I mixed together some onions, salt and pepper. Next, I filled the chicken with the mix. Then, I put the chicken in a hot oven and cooked for a few minutes. Finally, I put the chicken on a plate and cut it into thin pieces. How delicious it was!
Cooking skills are much more useful than a lot of what is taught in schools, but cooking classes do require some fully equipped(配备齐全的) kitchens. I hope these classes will be good for students and not be seen as window dressing.
54.What kind of activity is cooking?
55.Why does cooking help discover the future career?
56.What does cooking avoid?
57.Who knows how to make chicken?
58.What does the writer think is required in cooking classes?
59.What’s your opinion of cooking classes?

M:At my primary school, I was one of the smartest kids. I always got near-perfect scores on all my tests. I was an excellent child, at least in my mind. I was pretty sure that once I got to my seventh grade, everyone would be surprised by me. But actually, they weren’t.
When I arrived at my new class, there was always someone else who could do better than I. My grades got worse. I believed I wasn’t smart. I believed I failed.
Over the next two years, I had to work very hard. Grades were still very low but they were gradually improving. I worked really hard but was still never the best at everything.
But do I really have to be the best at everything? All the pressure I was feeling, all that embarrassment when I did wrong, that was me! I was being too hard on myself.
