There are many idioms in English. An idiom is a phrase that we can’t understand from the meaning of each word. The following are some of them.
As the crow flies
When a bird flies from place to place, it takes the most direct route. But when people drive, they have to follow roads and often go farther. When people give a distance “as the crow flies”, they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads.
As Dan and his mum drove along the river, they could see the beach on the opposite side, Dan asked “How far is it to the beach ”
“It’s only about a quarter of a mile as the crow flies,” his mother said.
Blow hot and cold
In one of Aesop’s Fables, a man blows on his fingers to warm them up and then blows on his soup to cool it down. In both cases, the man is opening his mouth, but what comes out is different. If a person says one thing and later says the opposite, we say that the person is blowing hot and cold.
“Is Felicia going to tryout for the soccer team this year ” Stacy asked.
“I don’t know” Tricia replied.” Last week she was saying yes, but this week she’s saying no. She’s really blowing hot and cold.”
Break the ice
Nowadays people use the phrase to refer to ending an awkward silence by beginning a conversation.
It was the first day of summer camp. The four girls began to make their beds in silence. None of the girls knew each other, and no one knew what to say. Finally, one of them broke the ice by saying “Hey, where’s everybody from ”
Bury the hatchet
In native American culture, when two nations agreed to end their war, they buried the hatchet. So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else.
Colin could not excuse his sister for breaking his tennis racket. Finally, his sister said, “Colin, can’t we bury the hatchet ”

Todd Bol, a retired businessman, could never have expected that a wooden container he built in his front yard one day would have the global impact it does today.
Bol built a dollhouse-size structure that looked like a schoolhouse on a post and he put it in his yard as a free community library to remember his mother, who was a book lover and school teacher. Bol’s design gave birth to Little Free Library (LFL), a nonprofit organization that seeks to place small, accessible book exchange boxes in neighborhoods around the world. The concept is simple: Neighbors are invited to share a book, leave a book, or both. Today, there are over 50,000 of these libraries registered in 70 countries.
Almost everyone can register with LFL and start a library as long as the person keeps it in good shape and makes sure that book materials are appropriate for his/her neighborhood. Library owners can create their own library boxes; therefore, the libraries are usually unique in appearance, and there seems to be no limit to the possibilities. One library in California was built out of a used wine container; another in Texas had tiny stairs and bright colored walls. Once registered, libraries are assigned a number at LFL’s website. The LFL Index lists the locations of all libraries with GPS coordinates (坐标) and other information. Owners receive a sign saying “Little Free Library”.
People say they have been attracted to pick up a book when walking by a Little Free Library, out of curiosity and because it’s convenient. Some sidewalk librarians say they have met more neighbors since having a little library in their front yard. Bol is also most proud of the way Little Free Library is bringing communities together. “It’s started a neighborhood exchange. It gets people talking and more comfortable with their neighbors,” he says. “This leads to them helping each other.”
4. What does the underlined word “design” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. A community center. B. A dollhouse on a post.
C. A book exchange box. D. A nonprofit organization.
5. What can we learn about the operation of a Little Free Library
A. There is no limit to the selection of books.
B. The library can come in any shape and color.
C. The library needs to hire many professional librarians.
D. The owner must first be assigned a number from the LFL website.
6. What can be inferred about Little Free Library
A. It helps improve GPS functions. B. It connects libraries around the world.
C. It makes reading accessible to the poor. D. It helps restore human connections.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. LFL: A Booster to Shared Reading B. LFL: The Best Place to Meet Neighbors
C. Todd Bol: A Successful Book Businessman D. Reading: An Approach to Improving Yourself
C
In the last few years, biotechnology has been changing the way we think about fashion by turning organic waste into sustainable fibers. Revolutionary textiles (纺织品) made from pineapples, oranges, grapes, and even mushrooms are here to stay. And now, an amazing invention joins the sustainable trend by turning spoiled milk into biodegradable (可生物分解的) T-shirt.
Mi Terro, an exciting and innovative startup based in Los Angeles, was founded by CEO Robert Luo. After visiting his uncle’s dairy farm in 2020, and noticing the huge amounts of milk being dumped, Luo realized something must be done. According to Mi Terro, 40 percent of food including 128 million tons of milk is wasted annually. This generated around 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases.
Luo soon came up with a way to turn food waste into clothes, turning the spoiled milk into biodegradable fibers to form an eco-friendly textile.
Not only is Luo’s solution extremely creative, it also adds benefit to the clothing he manufactures. According to Interesting Engineering, the process uses 60 percent less water than is used when making organic cotton shirts and the textile feels three times softer than cotton. Plus, the clothing is antibacterial, anti-wrinkle, and temperature regulating. These clothes are also healthy to wear; each T-shirt has 18 amino acids (氨基酸) that benefit the skin. But there’s even more! The company has committed to planning 1S trees for every purchase.
Mi Terro launched its milk-made T-shirts-online in 2021, and they now sold in over 40 countries around the world. Its groundbreaking process can also be used to create a sustainable substitute for plastic. Their ultimate goal would be to replace petroleum-based materials with protein-based materials made from food waste. This, in itself, has countless applications for the fashion, health care, and packaging industries.
Innovative and inspiring solution are proving to be the answer to growing waste and sustainability challenges the globe faces these days. Eco-conscious businesses like Mi Terro are creating a circular economy and are having a huge positive impact on the environment. Their vision for sustainable solutions may soon impact the entire world.
8. What are the clothes of Luo’s company made from
A. Organic mushrooms.
B. Plastic waste.
C. Ripped oranges.
D. Spoiled milk.
9. What can we learn about the Lou’s uncle’s dairy farm
A. It produces 40 billion tons of milk annually.
B. It builds many greenhouses to store milk.
C. It pours away large amounts of milk each year.
D. It turns foods into fashionable clothes.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The solutions to food waste.
B. The necessity of planting trees.
C. The advantages of Mi Terro’s T-shirts.
D. The process of recycling waste milk.
11. What does the author think of Luo’s company
A. It has a promising future.
B. It will change to manufacture plastic.
C. It is facing sustainability challenges.
D. It aims to recycle petroleum-based materials.
D
While the ability to copy sounds is uncommon among animals, only a few species can adjust their voice to sound higher or lower. Seals are one of these animals and they copy humans like parrots. They change the pitch (音高) of their calls depending on the sounds of their surroundings.
Now scientists have found baby seals are on the short list of animals with volume control. “By looking at seals which may be capable of learning sounds, we hope to understand how humans acquire speech and finally why we are such chatty animals,” said Dr. Ravignani, one of these scientists.
The scientists studied eight harbor baby seals which were being held in a center before being released back into the wild. They recorded noises from the nearby sea before playing them back to these seals at volumes ranging from no sound to higher sound, but keeping the same tone height as the animal’s calls. They then recorded the baby seals’ calls to see whether they changed their tone of voice to match these sounds. Baby seals lowered their tone of voice when they heard louder sea noises. But one of them displayed the so-called Lombard effect, producing louder calls when the noise got louder. This is also typical of human speech, as people generally raise their voices to be better understood in noisy situations.
Baby seals have a more advanced control over their calls than assumed up. This control seems to be already present at an early age. This is astonishing, as few other animals seem capable of that. However, baby seals didn’t produce more or longer calls when exposed to different levels of sea sounds.
Dr. Ravignani said, “To date, humans seem to be the only mammals with direct connections between the cortex—the outer layer of the brain, and the larynx—what we use to produce tone of voice. These results show that seals may be the most promising species to find these direct connections and uncover the mystery of speech.”
12. What are the scientists studying about baby seals
A. Their ability to adjust their volume.
B. Their ability to acquire human speech.
C. Their ability to communicate with parrots.
D. Their ability to change their surroundings.
13. How did most of the baby seals react when hearing the louder noises
A. They became more active. B. They kept the same tone height.
C. They made more or longer calls. D. They lowered their tone of voice.
14. Which of the following belongs to Lombard effect according to Paragraph 3
A. A man speaks louder at a noisy market.
B. A student can learn better in a quiet library.
C. A salesgirl with a smile can sell more houses.
D. A talkative businessman is more likely to succeed.
15. What does Dr. Ravignani stress in his words in the last paragraph
A. The mystery of speech is difficult to uncover.
B Scientists should make good use of seals in the sea.
C. The results of the study help to know human speech.
D. Different parts of human brain should be further studied.

【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. A

B. Scientists should make good use of seals in the sea.
C. The results of the study help to know human speech.
D. Different parts of human brain should be further studied.

My classmates and I went to the Huanle Farm last weekend. Locating on the hillside, the farm is known for its beautiful scenery. Hard had we arrived at the farm when we spotted many oranges hang from the branches. Each of us were given a basket and a pair of scissor. Then a farmer taught us how to pick oranges. In the warm sunshine, we laughed a lot while picking but some even started singing. After we paid the oranges we harvested, we head back home. It was great fun to do some labor on the Huanle Farm, where not only made us happy but also got us closer to the nature.
【答案】1 Locating→Located
2. Hard→Hardly
3. hang→hanging
4. were→was
5. scissor→scissors
6. but→and
7. paid 后加上 for
8. head→headed
9. where→which
10. 删除the
故将were改为was。
结合句意可知,we laughed a lot while picking和some even started singing之间是递进关系,而非转折关系,所以需用连词and连接。故将but改为and。
故将where改为which。
10.考查冠词。句意:在欢乐农场劳动很有趣,这不仅让我们感到快乐,还让我们更加亲近大自然。nature前通常不用冠词。故删除the。
