In a class I teach adults. I gave the class homework that was to “go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time.”
It doesn’t sound like a very tough homework until you realize that most of the men in that group were over 35 who were less willing to express their feelings. So this was a very challenging homework for some.
At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what had happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand. He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken.
As he stood up, he began by saying, “Five years ago, my father and I had a sharp disagreement and really never solved it since then. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to be at family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other, So, last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my father I loved him. It was weird (怪异的), but just making that decision seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.”
“The next morning I was up bright and early. I got to the office early and completed more in two hours than I had the whole day before. At 9: 00 I called my dad to see if I could come over after work. When he answered the phone, I just said, ‘Dad, can I come over after work tonight I have something to tell you. ’My dad agreed with reluctance (不情愿).”
“At 5: 30. I was at my parents’ house ringing the doorbell, praying (祈祷) that Dad would answer the door. As luck would have it, Dad did answer the door. I didn’t waste any time — I took one step in the door and said, ‘Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.’”

Sean respected his heroism and courage as a soldier, and he did everything he could to make his father proud when he was still alive. However, Sean’s father was a strict man who never appreciated him. Sean longed to hear words of praise from his father, but that day never came.
After his father’s death, Sean was heartbroken. He would miss his father, and more importantly, he would never get the chance to make his father proud. But life gave him that chance in the most unexpected way.
One day, Sean was playing in his neighborhood when he saw a little girl sitting sadly on the pavement. He immediately recognized her as she lived a couple of houses away from him. Watching her, Sean wondered why she seemed so sad. He decided to talk to her.
“Hi! I’m Sean. What’s wrong You look upset,” he said, taking a seat beside her.
“I’m Melanie,” said the girl, “My mommy passed away, and I miss her.”
“So did my dad. I miss him too,” said Sean. “Would you like to play with me ” he offered.
“Can I ” she smiled, and Sean nodded.
That day marked the start of Sean and Melanie’s friendship. They would always play together after school.

Jonathan had been wandering on the streets for almost a whole day after angrily running away from his home in the morning. Thinking of his quarrel with his mother for his study, he still felt depressed and hopeless.
It was freezing and snowing at dusk on such a winter day. And the sky was dark. He was walking down an empty set where there were no passers-by, because people must have locked themselves at home for warmth. Jonathan was walking to a crossroad when suddenly he encountered a little boy stuck in the middle of the road alone like him.
Jonathan had meant to turn a blind eye to him at first. But the boy’s sad crying and the worry that he might be hit by cars made Jonathan just not walk away. He approached, saying, “Hey! What are you doing alone here Where is your mother ”
“I want to go to mama and papa. Please take me home,” the boy replied, bursting into tears. Jonathan led him away from the crossroad. Then, he asked worriedly, “How did you come here What’s your name ”
“I’m Leo. I was playing with my cat. He ran away, and I ran after him for a long distance. But when I turned back home, I lost my way,” cried the boy. Feeling pity for the boy, Jonathan decided that he couldn’t leave the little boy alone here. With no cellphone and considering the police station was far from here, Jonathan decided to help him first.
He took him to different neighborhoods, aiming to look for his home. But things didn’t go that smoothly as he had expected. It was getting darker, and Jonathan thought he had to find Leo’s home. He knocked on every door, noneffective. Exhausted and starving, he realized Leo must be as hungry as him. He offered him the chocolate he had bought with his rest money. It was snowing more heavily, and he removed his coat and put it around Leo.

Brodie and his father lived in a caravan (宿营拖车) ever since his mother died and they lost their house. Now they worked for Miss Martha in the garden.
Brodie’s father had been a famous violin player. Brodie loved to watch how his father made the bow dance and glide (滑动) across the strings. When he turned 12, his father taught him how to play the instrument properly. Brodie was a fast learner and soon he could play the violin almost as well as his dad.
One day, Miss Samson, Brodie’s teacher, asked if anyone could play the violin. A talent scout (星探) was coming to school. He was looking for someone to play in the musical Mr Spy.
Hollie Larson’s hand went up fast. “I can play the violin,” she said. “I play in competitions.” Brodie kept quiet, but his friend Cam said, “Brodie has a violin and he can play it too.”
Brodie slid down in his seat. There was no way he would be good enough to play for an audience. He wasn’t going to make a fool of himself. Hollie Larson was good at everything.
“Bring your instruments tomorrow for a trial run,” the teacher said. “And oh, if you are selected, the pay is good!”
Brodie’s father let him take the violin. “But do take good care of it, Brodie,” he said.
Hollie Larson offered to play first. She was good, really good. Brodie suddenly felt embarrassed. There was no way he could play after her. But Miss Samson’s voice was demanding. “Brodie,” she said. “Your turn!”
Brodie felt his face get hot as he pulled out the violin. But the minute the bow touched the strings, Brodie was transported to a different world. He was back in Martha’s garden listening to his father. The room, was silent as Brodie walked back to his seat. And then came the applause, everyone clapping, except Hollie Larson.
Since the talent scout would come the next morning, Brodie decided to put the violin case on a high shelf in the classroom that night. It was the safest place, he thought. But, he was wrong!

I made it all the way to fifth grade before anyone (except me) realized that I couldn’t see twenty feet in front of me. Our school had vision screenings (视力普查) every year, but somehow I had managed to fake good vision and pass the tests.
But then in the fifth grade, I failed. It was my turn to go into the screening room, and I nervously took my seat in front of the testing machine. The nurse told me to look into the little black machine and tell her which direction the letter E’s legs were pointing. Barely able to make out the black spot of an E, I made a guess: “Right, left, left, up, down, up, left, right”. I looked up at her.
She studied my face for a moment. Then she said, “Could you repeat that ”
I panicked. I’d never been asked to repeat it. And I hadn’t memorized the guess I’d just made up. I was trapped. So, I looked into the machine again and made up another sequence of guesses. I glanced over at the nurse, who was leaning forward with a frown on her face.
“You have no idea which way they’re facing, do you ” she asked.
“Not really,” I confessed.
“Can you even see the E at all ” she asked.
“Sort of.. no,” I admitted.
“Then why didn’t you just say so ” she demanded.
I didn’t respond. I thought the answer was obvious. Glasses in the fifth grade were a social death sentence. I would become a joke in my class.
The nurse sent me home with a note for my mother that said I needed to visit the eye doctor because I’d failed the vision test. The trip home today was very slow.
My mother (who wears glasses) said it would all be just fine. It wouldn’t hurt a bit, she said. But I wasn’t worried about pain—I was worried about looking like Super Geek (怪人).

It was just another busy day until I met the boy on the bus. He was not a passenger like me. He was, what we call a street child, an 8-10-year-old kid with a worn T-shirt. These poorly dressed kids were seen almost everywhere in Dhaka city. But what was special about that boy was his face. There was “something” in him that caught my attention. That was an angelic(天使般的)baby face with little care.
He got straight into the bus as it stopped at a traffic light. The bus helper shouted at him in the first place. But instead of talking back, the boy kept silent and started handing out a piece of paper to all the passengers. What was written in the paper was, in short, that his father died a couple of years ago. His mother worked at houses. He badly needed money to help his family, so he wished someone warm-hearted to buy chocolates from him.
This was nothing new to people who took a bus every day and I was no different. I had my earphones on, listening to some relaxing music to kill time. When he came to me to get the paper back, I casually gave him some money. Thankfully it brought some smiles on his face. He was about to give me ten chocolates in return for the money I gave to him when I stopped him.
“I don’t like chocolates, brother. So there is no need of chocolates. You can have the money,” I said.
All of a sudden, the smile on his face disappeared.
“I’m not a beggar. Please take the chocolate, or take your money back.”
His straight answer greatly surprised me. I even felt he was slightly angry. I had given money to many kids before, without taking their chocolates. But this time something seemed different. I realized his angelic baby face was not the only thing special about him.

After graduating from college, I worked as a salesman for a piano company. We advertised our pianos in small town newspapers and then, when we had received many replies, we would load our little trucks, and drive into the area and sell the pianos to those who had replied.
Every time we advertised, we would receive a reply on a postcard which said, “Please bring me a new piano for my little granddaughter. It must be red mahogany (红木). I can pay $10 a month with my egg money.” Of course, we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month. No finance company would carry a contract with payments that small, so we ignored her postcards.
One day, however, I happened to be in that area calling on other replies, and out of curiosity I decided to look the old lady up. I found pretty much what I expected: The old lady lived in a one-room cabin in the middle of a cotton field. The cabin had a dirt floor and there were chickens in the house. Obviously, the old lady could not have qualified to purchase anything on credit — no car, no phone, no real job, nothing but a roof over her head and not a very good one at that.
I could see daylight through it in several places. Her little granddaughter was about 10, barefoot and wearing a feed sack (麻布袋) dress. I explained to the old lady that we could not sell a new piano for $10 a month and that she should stop writing to us every time she saw our ad. I drove away heartsick, but my advice had no effect — she still sent us the same post card every six weeks. Always wanting a new piano, red mahogany, please, and swearing she would never miss a $10 payment. It was sad.
Several years later, I owned my own piano company, and when I advertised in that area, the postcards started coming to me. For months, I ignored them — what else could I do

My aunt Sandy is a very kind-hearted woman. She loves animals so much that she found a job in an emergency vet clinic(兽医诊所)after graduating from college. There she could help a lot of injured pets.
One day, a rescue worker brought in a homeless cat. The cat had numerous injuries and needed immediate medical aid. No one in the vet clinic wanted to rescue the cat but Sandy. All the others didn't think the cat would survive. And they suggested putting the cat to death.
But Sandy didn't want to give up. She always believes that every animal deserves a chance. Holding the cat in her arms, she was determined to rescue her.
Sandy was good at treating injured animals. Thanks to her, the cat survived. She took good care of the cat and she gradually recovered. However, it wasn't the end of the story. Because of the operation performed on her face, the cat always wore a sad expression and looked really ugly. Those who came to the clinic to adopt pets didn't want her.
The staff at the vet clinic suggested getting rid of the cat. But Sandy didn't agree. She wanted to adopt the cat herself, but there was a problem—her husband was allergic(过敏)to cats. So Sandy couldn't take her home.
Thinking the cat might have to be homeless, Sandy was very sad. She had tried very hard to rescue her so she didn't want to lose her. She tried to persuade people around her to adopt the cat, but they didn't show any interest in such an ugly cat.

Not knowing they were poor, the kids just thought their mother was strict in money management. Melissa was really glad about that.
Christmas was just around the corner. Although there wasn't budget for a lot of gifts, Melissa planned to please the kids with a family party. She prepared weeks ahead of time, asking one by one what the kids wanted for Christmas. Fortunately, Melissa managed to spare $ 80 dollars for the whole family to enjoy the fun of Christmas shopping.
The big day arrived. Mellissa drove the kids to a nearby Walmart and gave each kid a twenty-dollar bill. “Now, my children,” she announced, “you have two hours to pick a gift in the supermarket. Then we will meet back at the gate.” Excited, the children scattered (四散) and rushed into the supermarket.
Melissa smiled. She looked at her own note and put it back into her pocket. Well, the Melissa smiled. She looked at her own note and put it back into her pocket. As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder (胭脂粉). The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in “How terrible,” I heard myself saying “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift My grandmother wouldn't even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face.

参考答案:
1.“It was as if a change came over my dad. Before my eyes his face softened, the reluctance seemed to disappear and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said, ‘I love you too, son, but I’ve never been able to say it.’ It was such a precious moment that I didn’t want to move. Mom walked by with tears in her eyes. I just waved and blew her a kiss. Dad and I hugged for a moment longer and then I left. I hadn’t felt that great in a long time.”
“But that’s not even my point. Two days after that visit, my dad, who had heart problems but didn’t tell me, had an attack and ended up in the hospital, unconscious. I don’t know if he’ll make it. So my message to all of you in this class is this: Don’t wait to do the things you know need to be done. What if I had waited to tell my dad that I love him — maybe I will never get the chance again! Take the time to do what you need to do and do it now!”

Seeing Leo and his parents off, Jonathan was lost in thought. Recalling how anxious Leo’s parents were and how joyful the boy was to see his parents again just now, Jonathan was deeply touched. He thought his parents must be as worried as Leo’s. Or maybe they were anxiously searching the world for their son right now. He grew guilty for ignoring his parents’ love for him and for what he had done today. All his anger dying away in an instant, he rushed in the direction of his home.

That was when the talent scout came into the room. “Your teacher tells me there is real talent here,” he said, looking around. “I’m looking forward to hearing you.” Again, it was Hollie Larson who played first. Brodie listened but seemed to hear nothing. He saw that the talent scout smiled and whispered something to Miss Samson. When it was Brodie’s turn, Brodie lowered his head and explained his situation, overwhelmed by a wave of sadness.
Suddenly, Hollie Larson walked toward him, holding out her violin—“Use mine,” she said. Brodie was stunned. Hollie really longed to win, but now she was offering him a chance. He had thought it was she who damaged his violin! He shook his head, but she insisted. “If you can’t play, that’s not a real win.” Casting a grateful glance at her, Brodie took over the violin. While playing, he felt his inner world coming back to peace. The talent scout was on his feet, smiling and clapping. So Brodie won the selection and was to play the violin in Mr Spy. Hollie didn’t win, but she and Brodie became true friends.

5. The next day, my mother dragged me to the eye doctor’s office. I chose a set of frames and tried to believe my mother when she said they looked really good on me. The doctor said the glasses would be ready soon. But I wasn’t ready at all. When the glasses arrived, the eye doctor put them on my face and walked me out onto the sidewalk in front of his office. Looking up from my shoes, I found myself in a whole new world — a world filled with clear pictures, bright colors, and fine detail everywhere I looked. I could also see my mother smiling as she watched me see the world in a whole new way. On that first day, they were a present.
But then Monday morning came, and I had to face what I fear: the kids in my classroom. I was frightened that some naughty boys would call me “four eyes!” However, it didn’t happened as I feared it would be. When I entered the classroom, Lily, my best friend, showed me a big smile, saying, “Wow! How beautiful your glasses are!” Even, during the math class, for the first time I raised up my hand and answered the question because I finally saw the blackboard clearly. So don’t be afraid of what you think is frightening, maybe it would open a brand new world.

Twenty years later while sitting at a bar, I heard the most beautiful piano music behind me. Looking around, I saw a lovely young woman playing a very nice grand piano. Stunned by her great performance, I moved to a table beside her. She stopped and smiled at me politely, “Aren’t you the man who sold my grandma a piano a long time ago ” It didn’t ring a bell, so she started to explain. And I suddenly remembered.
