A
The Dead Sea might be the most famous saline body in the world, but it’s by no means the only one. Here, we uncover some other salt lakes around the world.
Dead Sea
The most famous of the lot, the Dead Sea—also known as the Salt Sea—is a natural place to start. It’s technically not a sea at all, but a land salt lake. Its waters are mainly drawn from the Jordan River, and the high salinity (盐度) means no life can survive here, so don’t expect any colorful fish. However, much amusement results from the sea’s buoyancy (浮力): Bring some reading material to the waters and lie back—nature will do the rest.
Lake Assal
Surrounded by black volcano rocks, Lake Assal takes the title of being the lowest point in Africa. Vast salt fields mark its edges; the lake has long been at the centre of the area’s salt trade, on which the region’s African locals still rely. Though the area might not be suitable to live in, the waters are rich in minerals and related to health benefits.
Great Salt Lake
The biggest salt lake in the western hemisphere, and the one that gave Salt Lake City its name, the Great Salt Lake finds its home in northern Utah. What makes the lake well-known is not only the lake’s blue and green waters and white-sand beaches, but also Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park, both offering super hiking and biking trails, and great long views.
Don Juan Pond
Don Juan Pond might not win any prizes for its beauty—at four inches deep, it’s little more than a pond, but it is worth visiting. Its salinity content of almost 40 percent makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, meaning it doesn’t freeze even when Antarctic temperatures drop to -50℃. And with suggestions that water in a similar form could exist on Mars, there’s more than one reason for scientists to study this fascinating dry, cold environment.
21.What can visitors probably do in Lake Assal
A.Read books. B.Have a hike.
C.Enjoy small fishes. D.Take a bath in the lake.
22.What is the Great Salt Lake famous for
A.Its great parks. B.Its scientific value.
C.Its highest salinity. D.Its specific location.
23.Which lake is valuable for space exploration
A.Dead Sea. B.Lake Assal.
C.Don Juan Pond. D.Great Salt Lake.
B
As a reporter, I talk to strangers for a living and love the challenge of getting them to open up. Yet here’s a confession: I’ve been married for eight happy years, but until six months ago, I could be the stereotypical inattentive husband.
It’s not that my wife and I never had pleasant conversations. But more often than I care to admit, I was just going through the motions, nodding when I was supposed to. I was the guy who’d defensively snap (厉声说), “Of course I did!” when my wife would ask, “JB, did you even hear what I just said ”
In January, I began to lose my voice repeatedly. Doctors told me I needed surgery, or else my throat would be permanently damaged. Total silence would be required for the first few weeks of my recovery.
Two hours after the surgery, my eyes filled with tears as my two-year-old son stood by me looking puzzled because I wouldn’t answer his questions. I wanted to talk but couldn’t.
But before I got home, I had settled into a Zen-like peace about my silence. Soon I noticed another “side effect”: As my wife talked to me to keep up my spirits, I wasn’t just hearing her; I was listening to her.
Over the next few weeks, I found myself unwilling to miss a word she said. I began to hear a sweetness in her voice that I hadn’t recalled for long. I found myself understanding her better on topics I’d previously dismissed as “things I just don’t get as a guy”.
I also realized my toddler (学步的儿童) wasn’t just chattering nonstop but that he often had surprisingly thoughtful things to say for his age.
Even while walking my dog in the woods near our home, I began hearing pleasant patterns in bird songs. The rustling leaves sounded crisper to me. Before my surgery, I’d have spent those walks on my phone.
After several months, I was fully recovered. Now conversation in our house is better, but not because I’m talking more. I’m just listening better and becoming less and less surprised that I like what I hear.
24.What does the author want to tell us most in the first two paragraphs

C.To ensure recovery. D.To show unhappiness.
26.After the surgery, how did the author feel about his inability to talk at first

27.What is the text mainly about
A.Easier said than done.

C.Knowledge is power.
D.Listen well and you can hear the world.

The Mogao Grottoes were a center of Buddhist life and some of the world’s great cultures for hundreds of years. However, by the late Qing Dynasty they had been abandoned and nearly forgotten and many of the caves had become damaged by the elements. Around 1900, with the discovery of a library of thousands of ancient documents, the caves received new interest from Chinese and foreign researchers. Unfortunately, this resulted in tens of thousands of items from the caves being taken to foreign museums
In the 1940s, many researchers and artists visited the area to study traditional Chinese art. Copies of some of the artwork painted by respected artists such as Zhang Daqian and GuanShanyue helped people all over the country learn about Dunhuang. These artists were also inspired by the artwork they saw in the caves and it began to influence their painting styles. Others staved in the desert for much longer, Chang Shuhong stayed for the rest of his life — struggling to record the cultural treasures and protect them from the weather. As a result of their efforts the Dunhuang Academy was formed to protect and study the Mogao Grottoes.
In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While the caves are open to the public, access is now limited in order to protect the artwork. However, the caves can be seen online in digital form so that people around the world can study and enjoy them.

In our information-driven society, shaping our worldview through the media is similar to forming an opinion about someone solely based on a picture of their foot. While the media might not deliberately deceive us, it often fails to provide a comprehensive view of reality.
Consequently, the question arises: Where, then, shall we get our information from if not from the media Who can we trust How about experts- people who devote their working lives to understanding their chosen slice of the world However, even experts can fall prey to the allure of oversimplification, leading to the “single perspective instinct” that hampers (阻碍) our ability to grasp the intricacies (错综复杂) of the world.
Simple ideas can be appealing because they offer a sense of understanding and certainty. And it is easy to take off down a slippery slope, from one attention-grabbing simple idea to a feeling that this idea beautifully explains, or is the beautiful solution for, lots of other things. The world becomes simple that way.
Yet, when we embrace a singular cause or solution for all problems, we risk oversimplifying complex issues. For instance, championing the concept of equality may lead us to view all problems through the lens of inequality and see resource distribution as the sole panacea. However, such rigidity prevents us from seeing the multidimensional nature of challenges and hinders true comprehension of reality. This “single perspective instinct” ultimately clouds our judgment and restricts our capacity to tackle complex issues effectively. Being always in favor of or always against any particular idea makes you blind to information that doesn’t fit your perspective. This is usually a bad approach if you would like to understand reality.
Instead, constantly test your favorite ideas for weaknesses. Be humble about the extent of your expertise. Be curious about new information that doesn’t fit, and information from other fields. And rather than talking only to people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world. If this means you don’t have time to form so may opinions, so what
Wouldn’t you rather have few opinions that are right than many that are wrong
32.What does the underlined word “allure” in Para.2 probably mean
A.Temptation. B.Tradition. C.Convenience. D.Consequence.
33.Why are simple ideas appealing according to the passage
A.They meet people’s demand for high efficiency.
B.They generate a sense of complete understanding.
C.They are raised and supported by multiple experts.
D.They reflect the opinions of like-minded individuals.
34.What will the author probably agree with
A.Simplifying matters releases energy for human brains.
B.Constant tests on our ideas help make up for our weakness.
C.A well-founded opinion counts more than many shallow ones.
D.People who disagree with us often have comprehensive views.
35.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A.Embracing Disagreement: Refusing Overcomplexity
B.Simplifying Information: Enhancing Comprehension
C.Understanding Differences: Establishing Relationships
D.Navigating Complexity: Challenging Oversimplification

The slightest wrong choice of words can change someone’s mindset. Words are the most powerful weapon one can ever have, whether it comes to writing or speaking. You don’t know which word will hurt someone and negatively impact their mind. 36 Words that seem like a joke can seem deadly to others’ minds and life. A person should have control over his tongue. 37 Spoken words can’t be taken back, so one should use them wisely. Speech should always be constructive, not destructive. Grasping the points below will surely help you in improving your vocal quality.
Stay silent when you are angry. Never speak when you are in a bad mood because at that moment, your mind is going through bad thoughts. If those bad thoughts get mixed with your words, it can spoil others’ mood. 38 That’s why you should always be silent when you are angry. Whenever you are mad at something, first try to calm yourself.
39 A wise person always thinks twice before speaking. He frames a sentence wisely according to the situation so that no one feels hurtful. Your words should be clear enough to describe the situation. Even the greatest lecturer prepares a few terms before addressing a vast crowd. A good lecturer has the power to convince anyone through their wordplay.
Never judge a person until or unless he speaks. Don’t pre-judge someone before you have a conversation with that person. Let him utter a word before you get to the conclusion of framing his image in your mind. 40
A.Avoid speaking too fast.
B.Think well before you speak.
C.Some words could be poisonous to others.

Since the beginning of this school year, Josette Duran, coach of the local school girls’ volleyball team, has kept an unusual morning routine at the request of her son, Dylan.
Every day, she packs him a lunch of two sandwiches, two bags of chips, two drinks, and two servings of fruit. At first, Duran thought her son had perhaps hit another growth spurt (短时激增) and needed double the nutrition. She finally asked him if he was getting enough to eat and received a surprising answer about why Dylan needed the extra food. “There are some children lacking food at school. But it’s for Johnson alone. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch.”
It turned out that Dylan had befriended a classmate, Johnson, whose family was tightening their belts. Johnson’s single mother had recently lost her job and was very low on cash, so she could no longer afford to buy school lunches. After learning this, Duran was even more eager to help Johnson out and his mother because she herself could empathize (产生共鸣) with their situation. That hit home to her because a few years ago, she and her son were homeless.
Her mind wandered back to the miserable scene when she was living in her car and she was washing her son in bathrooms. And to make things worse, they didn’t have sufficient food. Now that they had overcome their hardship and were in a stable place, Duran wanted nothing more than to reach out and help others in need. She even left encouraging notes in the lunches for both boys.
Duran shared the incident in an inspiring Facebook post in which she talked about how proud she was of her son’s heart and how kind he was for doing that for another person. The efforts made by Duran who was by no means well off, got noticed by her players. A plan was under discussion to help their coach. Meanwhile, Johnson’s mother also learned of Duran’s generosity, and she called Duran up and offered to pay her back in person.

18.Which pet may an outgoing person prefer
A.A bird. B.A dog. C.A cat.
19.What may a cat owner be like
A.Clever. B.Sociable. C.Careful.
20.What does the speech mainly talk about
A.Pet people’s personalities. B.More outgoing dog people. C.Less sociable cat people.
【答案】18.B 19.A 20.A
M: Are you a dog person or a cat person What psychological factors make a person choose one type of pet over the other
An outgoing person prefers dogs. This should really come as no surprise. Owning a dog is a social experience, because you always have to walk them and interact with other dog owners. If you really like talking to other people, a dog might be for you. Cats on the other hand tend to stay at home, which means that taking care of a cat requires much less social interaction.
Cat people are smarter. While studies show that dog lovers are more outgoing and lively, cat lovers score higher on intelligence tests, and are said to be more open-minded. They are also more curious about the world, even though they might not leave the house to see it as much!
Do you love a dog or a cat Are you a different kind of pet person like a turtle person or a bird person Does your personality match with some features we talked about earlier I hope my speech will be helpful to you. Thank you for listening!

A
The Dead Sea might be the most famous saline body in the world, but it’s by no means the only one.
【答案】21.D 22.A 23.C
根据Lake Assal部分中的“Surrounded by black volcano rocks, Lake Assal takes the title of being the lowest point in Africa. Vast salt fields mark its edges; the lake has long been at the centre of the area’s salt trade, on which the region’s African locals still rely. Though the area might not be suitable to live in, the waters are rich in minerals and related to health benefits.(被黑色的火山岩包围着,是非洲最低点的称号。广阔的盐田标志着它的边缘,该湖长期以来一直是该地区食盐贸易的中心,该地区的非洲当地人仍然依赖于此。虽然该地区可能不适合居住,但水中富含矿物质,对健康有益。)”可知,这个盐是非洲最低点,且湖水含有丰富的矿物质,对身体有益,由此可推知,游客或许可以在Assal湖洗澡。故选D。
22.细节理解题。根据Great Salt Lake部分中的“What makes the lake well-known is not only the lake’s blue and green waters and white-sand beaches, but also Great Salt Lake State Park and Antelope Island State Park, both offering super hiking and biking trails, and great long views.(使湖闻名的不仅是湖的蓝色和绿色的海水和白色的沙滩,还有大盐湖州立公园和羚羊岛州立公园,都提供超级徒步旅行和自行车道,以及绝佳的远景。)”
根据Don Juan Pond部分中的“Its salinity content of almost 40 percent makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, meaning it doesn’t freeze even when Antarctic temperatures drop to -50℃. And with suggestions that water in a similar form could exist on Mars, there’s more than one reason for scientists to study this fascinating dry, cold environment.(其含盐量近40%,使其成为地球上含盐量最高的水体之一,这意味着即使南极气温降至-50℃,它也不会结冰。有迹象表明火星上可能存在类似形式的水,科学家们研究这个迷人的干燥寒冷环境的原因不止一个。)”可知,唐璜塘对太空探索很有价值。故选C。
A.He was fond of talking to strangers.
B.He enjoyed taking challenges.
C.Sometimes he ignored his wife’s words.
D.He often quarreled with his wife.
25.Why did the author have to keep silent
A.To avoid argument. B.To hear more.
C.To ensure recovery. D.To show unhappiness.
26.After the surgery, how did the author feel about his inability to talk at first
A.Peaceful. B.Upset. C.Puzzled. D.Uncertain.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.Easier said than done.
B.Full set, partial to listen to the dark.
C.Knowledge is power.
D.Listen well and you can hear the world.
根据第一段中的“Yet here’s a confession: I’ve been married for eight happy years, but until six months ago, I could be the stereotypical inattentive husband. (不过,我得坦白:我已经幸福地结婚八年了,但直到六个月前,我可能还是那种典型的粗心大意的丈夫。)”以及第二段中的“But more often than I care to admit, I was just going through the motions, nodding when I was supposed to. (但更多的时候,我只是走过场,在该点头的时候点头。)”可知,作者是一个粗心大意的丈夫,在与妻子说话的时候,只是走过场,而非用心交流。由此可知,在前两段中作者想告诉我们,有时他会忽视妻子的话。故选C项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Doctors told me I needed surgery, or else my throat would be permanently damaged. Total silence would be required for the first few weeks of my recovery. (医生告诉我,我需要手术,否则我的喉咙会永远受损。在我康复的最初几个星期里,我需要保持完全的沉默。)”可知,作者要完全保持沉默是为了确保康复。故选C项。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段“Two hours after the surgery, my eyes filled with tears as my two-year-old son stood by me looking puzzled because I wouldn’t answer his questions. I wanted to talk but couldn’t. (手术后两个小时,我的眼睛里充满了泪水,我两岁的儿子站在我身边,一脸困惑,因为我不愿回答他的问题。我想说话,但说不出口。)”可知,因为无法说话,作者很难和儿子交流。由此推知,作者感到心烦意乱。故选B项。
27.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“Now conversation in our house is better, but not because I’m talking more. I’m just listening better and becoming less and less surprised that I like what I hear. (现在我们家的谈话好多了,但不是因为我说话多了。我只是听得更好,越来越不惊讶我喜欢我听到的东西。)”可知,作者之前不认真倾听妻子的话,却因为手术后不能说话,意外地发现了倾听的好处。由此可知,作者想要告诉读者倾听的重要性,D项“好好倾听,你会听到全世界的声音”符合文章大意。故选D项。

D
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.C 35.D
根据第二段“leading to the “single perspective instinct” that hampers(阻碍)our ability to grasp the intricacies of the world. (导致“单一视角本能”, 阻碍我们掌握世界的复杂性)”可知,专家受到过度简化的allure,也会导致单一视觉,不能掌握世界的复杂性,因此推断此处表示受到了过度简化的诱惑,allure在这里指的是“诱惑”。故选A。
根据第三段的“Simple ideas can be appealing because they offer a sense of understanding and certainty. (简单的想法可能很有吸引力,因为它们提供了一种理解和确定性)”可知,简单的想法具有吸引力是因为它们产生一种完全理解的感觉。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Instead, constantly test your favorite ideas for weaknesses. Be humble about the extent of your expertise. Be curious about new information that doesn’t fit, and information from other fields. And rather than talking only to people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world.(相反,要不断测试你最喜欢的想法的弱点。
根据第一段内容“In our information-driven society, shaping our worldview through the media is similar to forming an opinion about someone solely based on a picture of their foot. While the media might not deliberately deceive us, it often fails to provide a comprehensive view of reality.(在我们这个信息驱动的社会中,通过媒体塑造我们的世界观就像仅仅根据一个人的脚的照片来形成对他们的看法一样,它经常无法提供全面的现实视角)”,第二段的“However, even experts can fall prey to the allure of oversimplification, leading to the “single perspective instinct” that hampers(阻碍)our ability to grasp the intricacies of the world.(然而,即使是专家也会受到过度简化的诱惑,导致“单一视角本能”,阻碍我们掌握世界的复杂性)”以及倒数第三的“And rather than talking only to people who agree with you, or collecting examples that fit your ideas, consult people who contradict you, disagree with you, and put forward different ideas as a great resource for understanding the world. (与其只与那些同意你的人交谈,或者收集符合你想法的例子,不如咨询那些反驳你、不同意你的人,并提出不同想法的人,作为理解世界的重要资源)”以及全文内容可知,本文作者主要提出“单一视角本能”最终会影响我们的判断力,限制我们有效解决复杂问题的能力,我们应该接受不同的观点,作为理解世界的重要资源。因此D项“驾驭复杂性:挑战过度简化”为最佳标题。故选D。

Whenever you are mad at something, first try to calm yourself.

The next day, they met on the campus of Duran’s school. After she gave Duran a grateful and affectionate hug, Johnson’s mother took out an envelope containing the money she borrowed. Hardly had Duran caught sight of it when she shook her head, saying no in a determined way. “I don’t think I did anything special,” Duran explained sincerely. “I just think I did what a human being is supposed to do.” Actually, the kindness and sympathy didn’t stop there. Duran’s team raised $400 to give to her to cover the cost of all the extra lunches she had made out of her own pocket.
However, Duran refused to keep the money raised especially for her. Instead, she donated it to the cafeteria at her son’s school without a second thought. The money was enough to pay back the past due accounts of all her son’s poor fellow students who bought school lunch. “Now everyone can eat,” Duran said with a shining smile, proud that it all started with her 14-year-old son’s close observation of someone other than himself—someone he could give a helping hand to, using a packed lunch made with lots of love.
