People with high self-esteem (自尊) use their successes to build confidence. They feel good about the future. They are willing to try new things and make new friends. Read what Jack and Mike wrote in their own diaries.

But I’m confident I’ll make friends there. We’ll have something in common (共同之处)— we love chess.

From a young age, I was very interested in language. I remember a holiday in Spain when I was 7. Two boys asked if I spoke Norwegian. When I couldn’t make a reply, they ran off, leaving me upset. Back home I searched shops for old language books and enjoyed trying all these different words to express what was in my head. I thought it was amazing, and still do.
At university, I did a combined languages degree, studying French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. From then on, it became a way of life. After graduation, I worked as an au pair (互惠生) in Germany, and finally studied German. I cycled to the Netherlands, picking up Dutch. It turned out that speaking a language abroad with local people was an ideal way to learn, especially in a time before the Internet.
Traveling to learn a language became an adventure (探险)—it came with huge excitement and of course lonelier, more complex moments. I have found that the speed of leaning depends on the language and how much attention I pay to it. If it is similar to a language I already speak, I find I can use it within weeks, although perhaps not so well.
Languages have had a big influence on my personal life, too. In 2003, during a train ride in the Balkans, I met my future wife—she is Macedonian (马其顿人), with a south-east Slavic languages and literature degree.
I’ve studied more than 50 languages now. I generally use 15 weekly and more than 30 in a year. I also support native and endangered languages. Having a world of languages out there and not learning them is like watching TV in black and white and not knowing there is color. They will continue to enrich me for a lifetime.
The most important thing about learning languages is the ability to build bridges with other people. They allow you to experience life differently.

The list for the sixth-grade basketball team was announced online. I was a little worried because I knew how much my 12-year-old son wanted to make the team.
I read the list of 13 names for a few minutes. Finally, I had to tell myself that my son wasn’t among the players who were allowed to continue playing. I felt sad. I wished it would be about victory. Like every parent, I love to say, “You did it!”
Instead, I had to give my son a speech to comfort my son, which was a lot less exciting, but probably more important. It was not really a speech, but a further discussion about spirit, courage and not giving up. Although it was painful for me to see myself so disappointed (失望), I needed to keep my own feelings in check. Sure, I wanted to call the coach to say he made a big mistake, but I would not. Nor would I let my son know that I thought it unfair (不公平的). Instead, I put my own feelings aside and let my son have a safe place to calm down his own moods. And when he was done, I needed to encourage him to continue to improve skills. That day was a loss, but the only way to get another was to put on his trainers and get on the basketball court again.
My son is 15 years old now. And, after being cut from the team for three years in a row (连续地), he got to see his name on the list for the high school team. Last week, my husband and I watched him play in his first game. The smile on his face when he made his first shot in is something I will never forget. “If you don’t believe, I’ll call the police.” is a lie that parents might use to get their young children to behave. A new psychological(心理学的)study led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore suggests that it has a relationship with harmful results when the children become adults.
The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children, how much they lie to their parents as adults, and how well they deal with adulthood challenges.
The first questionnaire(问卷)asked these young adults to recall(回忆)if their parents told them lies about eating, leaving or staying, spending money and so on. Some examples of such lies are “If you don’t come with me now, I will leave you here by yourself and “I don’t bring money with me today, we can come back another day”. Most of them filled in “Yes”. The second questionnaire included questions that could show how often they lie to their parents when they become adults. Lastly, these young adults filled in two other questionnaires that asked them about their psychological problems and if they often behave generously and thoughtfully.
Adults who were lied to as children were more likely to lie to their parents when they grow up. They also said it was much more difficult for them when meeting psychological and social challenges.
Lead author Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore’s School of Social Sciences said, “Parenting by lying can seem to save time, especially when the real reasons behind why parents want children to do something are difficult to explain. When parents tell children that honesty is the best rule, but display dishonesty by lying, such behavior can send wrong messages to their children. Parents’ dishonesty may finally destroy trust and encourage dishonesty in children.”
Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has negative influence on children when they grow up. Parents should understand these possible risks and think of other ways to replace lying, such as knowing children’s feelings, giving specific information so children know what to expect, offering choices and solving problems together, to encourage children to have good behavior, said lead author Setoh Peipei.
Children can be 56 by parents’ lies negatively
Introduction Parents’ using lies to make their children behave will 57 to harmful results when their children become adults.
Questionnaires to 379 young adults Asked them to recall if their parents told them lies. Asked about the frequency of 58 to their parents when they become adults. Asked about their psychosocial 59 . Asked them if they often have 60 and thoughtful behaviour.
Results It’s highly possible that adults who were lied to as children lied to their parents in 61 . They faced greater 62 when meeting psychological and social challenges. Some guests are with the sound proofing(隔音)and the dirty house.
Opinions It’s hard to explain the reasons why parents lie to their children. 63 dishonest sends wrong messages to children.
64 Parents should understand these possible risks and use correct ways instead of lying during parenting. Otherwise, 65 between them would disappear and children would certainly learn dishonesty from them.
B)请根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词,并将答案填写在答题卡相应位置上。
Embroidery (刺绣) is an important art form in Chinese culture. People often embroider handkerchiefs, bed covers, tablecloths and dresses. Shu embroidery (蜀绣) is one of the most famous embroidery styles in China. It has i 66 the whole world with its strong expression and smooth needlework.
The characteristics are g 67 affected (影响) by geographical environment, customs and cultures. Called the “Land of Abundance (富足)”, Sichuan province is rich in grain production. The people of this area also enjoy a slow lifestyle. So when embroidering, they are usually p 68 enough to spend much time on the form’s intricacy (复杂精致) and elegance (优雅). This could also be a reason why Shu embroidery was added to the l 69 of a national-level intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2006.
Making beautiful Shu embroidery products is never easy. It r 70 superb workmanship (卓越的工艺). Meng Dezhi, 59, was born to a family of embroiderers. She was one of the most talented workers at the Chengdu Shu embroidery factory. Even so, the long and boring nature of the process is a c 71 to her. And in winter, when her hands and feet are freezing, things become even more difficult. But her l 72 for the work has encouraged Meng to continue. Even for an experienced master like Meng, it s 73 takes several days or even a few months to finish a piece.
Meng has also popularized the culture of Shu embroidery s 74 the tradition was at a risk of waning (衰落). Many cheap products are made by modern machines. In 2005, the factory Meng worked in was f 75 to close. To make a living, Meng rented (租) a small space of 10 square meters, teaching young people embroidery skills. “In the early days, I set up the company just for survival, but now I really feel that I have the duty to pass on the traditional skill, to let it run from generation to generation,” she told China Daily.
