The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter, so when the chance came for a weekend to Sarasota, Florida, my bags were packed before you could say “sunshine”. I left for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness. Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best part- particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold- weather root vegetables- was a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call.
The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7:00 am to 1 p.m, rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets. Baskets of perfect red strawberries, the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes.
Disappointed by many a broken, vine-ripened(蔓上成熟的) promise, I’ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they’re unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown’s Grove Farm’s stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal- and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn’t be experiencing again for months.
Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown’s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where- luckily for me- I was planning to have dinner that very night. Without even seeing the menu, I knew I’d be ordering every tomato on it.
4. What did the author think of her winter life in New York
A. Exciting. B. Boring.
C. Relaxing. D. Annoying.
5. What made the author’s getting up late early worthwhile
A. Having a swim.
B. Breathing in fresh air.
C. Walking in the morning sun.
D. Visiting a local farmer’s market.
6. What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter
A. They are soft. B. They look nice.
C. They taste great D. They are juicy.
7. What was the author going to that evening
A. Go to a farm. B. Check into a hotel.
C. Eat in a restaurant. D. Buy fresh vegatables.
B 5. D 6. B 7. C
The freezing Northeast hasn’t been a terribly fun place to spend time this winter. 且根据第三段最后一句 back home in New York I wouldn't be experiencing again for months” 可知作者在纽约好几个月都不会吃到在萨拉索塔吃到的东西。
根据第一段最后一句 a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers' market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call” 可知,逛当地农产品早市值得作者为之起早。
No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they're unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless.”
由最后一段中的 a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where — luckily for me — I was planning to have dinner that very night可知,作者当晚打算去一家饭馆吃晚餐。故选C项。

At the age of 14, James Harrison had a major chest operation and he required 13 units (3.4 gallons) of blood afterwards. The blood donations(捐赠) saved his life, and he decided that once he turned 18, he would begin donating blood as regularly as he could.
More than 60 years and almost 1,200 donations later, Harrison, whose blood contains an antibody (抗体) that has saved the lives of 2.4 million babies from miscarriages (流产), retired as a blood donor on May 11. Harrison’s blood is valuable because he naturally produces Rh-negative blood, which contains Rh-positive antibodies. His blood has been used to create anti-D in Australia since 1967.
“Every bottle of Anti-D ever made in Australia has James in it,” Robyn Barlow, the Rh program director told the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s an amazing thing. He has saved millions of babies. I cry just thinking about it.” Since then, Harrison has donated between 500 and 800 milliliters of blood almost every week. He’s made 1,162 donations from his right arm and 10 from his left.
“I’d keep going if they let me,” Harrison told the Herald. His doctors said it was time to stop the donations — and they certainly don’t take them lightly. They had already enlarged the age limit for blood donations for him, and they’re cutting him off now to protect his health. He made his final donation, with some of the mothers and babies standing around who his blood helped save.
Harrison’s retirement is a blow to the Rh treatment program in Australia. Only 160 donors support the program, and finding new donors has proven to be difficult. But Harrison’s retirement from giving blood doesn’t mean he’s completely out of the game. Scientists are collecting and cataloging(列入目录) his DNA to create a library of antibodies and white blood cells that could be the future of the anti-D program in Australia.
8. What do we know about James Harrison
A. He saved 2.4 million poor people.
B. He is to retire as a blood donor.
C. He is a very grateful blood donor.
D. He donates blood nearly every day.
9. What is the author’s purpose of writing Paragraph 4
A. To state Harrison’s decision to continue donating blood.
B. To describe how Harrison’s donations come to an end.
C. To introduce some babies saved by Harrison’s blood.
D. To praise Harrison for his cooperation with the doctors.
10. What can we infer from the passage about Harrison
A. After his retirement, the Rh program will fail.
B. New donors are easy to find in a short time.
C. He continues to contribute to the Rh program.
D. His DNA is kept in a library for future study.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. A Special Man with a Rare Blood Type
B. The Blood Saving Millions of Babies
C. A Special Blood Type Donor to Retire
D. The Man with the Golden Arms
C 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据文章第一段“At the age of 14, James Harrison had a major chest operation and he required 13 units (3.4 gallons) of blood afterwards. The blood donations(捐赠) saved his life, and he decided that once he turned 18, he would begin donating blood as regularly as he could.”(James Harrison在14岁时做了一次胸部大手术,手术需要血液,献血挽救了他的生命,他决定一旦年满18岁,就开始尽可能定期献血)由此可以推知James Harrison是个非常感恩的献血者。
根据第四段中“They had already enlarged the age limit for blood donations for him, and they’re cutting him off now to protect his health. He made his final donation, with some of the mothers and babies standing around who his blood helped save.”(他们已经放宽了他献血的年龄限制,现在为了保护他的健康,他们决定停止他的献血。
根据最后一段的“But Harrison’s retirement from giving blood doesn’t mean he’s completely out of the game.”(但是Harrison的退役并不意味着他完全退出了这场“比赛”)可以推知,Harrison继续为RH项目做出贡献,选项C与文意相符,故选C。
根据文章第一段的主要内容和第三段中的“Since then, Harrison has donated between 500 and 800 milliliters of blood almost every week. He’s made 1,162 donations from his right arm and 10 from his left.”(从那以后Harrison几乎每周都要捐献500到800毫升的血液。

A world in which extinct creatures could be brought back to life came a step closer yesterday. Australian scientists have managed to extract a gene from a preserved sample of a Tasmanian tiger and make it active. The breakthrough has left them dreaming that one day they will be able to recreate the animal, which died out more than 70 years ago. And if it can be done with the Tasmanian tiger, it may also be possible to resurrect (复活) creatures that have been extinct for far longer.
“There used to be a time when extinction meant forever, but no more, ” said Professor Mike Archer. “We are now able to seriously challenge whether those animals that have gone for ever. What has been achieved is a very important step in bringing back those animals that are extinct. And while I think that technically it is still pretty difficult at the moment, we can now see the possibilities. I’m personally convinced that the Tasmanian tiger will be brought back to life in my lifetime.”
The breakthrough came after nine years of experiments by scientists at the University of Melbourne, who extracted a gene from one of several tigers preserved in alcohol in a Melbourne museum. They removed the equivalent gene from a mouse embryo implanted the tiger gene and then watched as the mouse continued to grow normally, suggesting the tiger gene had been activated.
Team leader Dr. Andrew Pask said it was the first time DNA from an extinct species had been used to “induce (引起) a functional response in another living organism”.
However, the animal’s entire gene structure would have to be revived in the same way to even begin the possibility of bringing the Tasmanian tiger back from the dead.
Mick Mooney, a wildlife officer of the Tasmanian Government, was worried that such developments could encourage people’s indifference to the protection of endangered species.
“If people think that we can bring animals back to life after they’ve gone, they will start saying that there is nothing to worry about because we can fix it up later.”
12. What does the underlined word “breakthrough” in the l paragraph refer to
A. Scientists have recreated new animals.
B. Scientists have resurrected endangered animal.
C. It has turned out that some creatures would not go extinct.
D. A tiger gene has been extracted successfully and activated.
13. Scientists are carrying out the experiments in order to ________.
A. bring extinct animals back to life
B. transplant the genes of tigers into other animals
C. find out what factors lead to the animals’ extinction
D. find a new way to extract animals’ DNA
14. Mike Archer thinks that ________.
A. scientists now have no technological difficulty reconnecting extinct animals
B. it’ll be a century or so before a Tasmanian tiger walks on the earth again
C. humans have come closer in reconnecting extinct animals
D. reconnecting extinct animals is impossible
15. We can learn from Mick Mooncy’s words that_________.
A. he thought it unnecessary to worry about endangered animals
B. his opinion is in contrast with that of the Tasmanian Government
C. he thought people should be encouraged to protect endangered animals
D. he is concerned that bringing extinct animals back to life may have a negative effect
D 13. A 14. C 15. D

You’ve seen other people flying kites, watching their paper creations float up into the clouds on a windy day. ___16___ Kite flying isn’t hard, and it’s a lot of fun!
The first step is to get a kite and find a large, open area. Then wait for a nice windy day. ___17___ Otherwise, kites can get hung up on either of them. Parks with lots of grass and beaches are both great places to try kite flying.
If you have a friend to help you, have one person hold the kite while the other person holds the spool(线轴) of string. The one with the kite should hold it overhead in both hands and throw it lightly up into the wind. If the wind is strong enough, it will catch the kite and lift it up, pulling the string tight. This works well on windy days, but what if the wind isn’t strong enough to catch your kite Then you need to let out some string and have your friend run with the kite behind him/her. ___18___
Once the wind catches your kite, start letting out string, little by little. ___19___ It’s somewhere between fifty and a hundred feet overhead. Spread your legs to keep yourself firmly rooted to the ground, and hold the spool with both hands. If it flies too high, you can reel(卷) in the string a little.
___20___ When the kite is close to the ground, have someone catch it so it doesn’t get torn or broken. Wind up the rest of your string and keep your kite safe until the next time you’re ready to fly it.
A. As you fly your kite, keep an eye on it.
B. Are you ready to give it a try yourself
C. To finish flying, reel in the kite slowly.
D. Keep going till your kite is at the height you want.
E. With this added burst of speed, the kite should fly.
F. Your perfect location shouldn’t have any trees or power lines.
G. Keep flying your kite until you feel it’s safe in the wind again.
B 17. F 18. E 19. D 20. C

上文提到“You’ve seen other people flying kites, watching their paper creations float up into the clouds on a windy day.(你见过其他人放风筝,看着他们的纸作品在有风的日子里飘上云端)”,下文提到“Kite flying isn’t hard, and it’s a lot of fun!(放风筝不难,而且很有趣)”,所以空处应该是过渡句。故选B项Are you ready to give it a try yourself (你准备好自己试试了吗)中的yourself和上文的other people相呼应,因此B选项承上启下,符合语境,故选B。
下文提到“Otherwise, kites can get hung up on either of them. Parks with lots of grass and beaches are both great places to try kite flying(否则,风筝可能会挂在其中一个上面。有很多草的公园和海滩都是放风筝的好地方)”,因此本空应提到放风筝的好地点。故选F项Your perfect location shouldn’t have any trees or power lines.(你的理想位置不应该有任何树木或电线)说明了放风筝的好地方,因此F选项符合语境,故选F。
上文提到“Then you need to let out some string and have your friend run with the kite behind him/her.(然后你需要放出一些线,让你的朋友牵着风筝跑)”,下一段开头提到“Once the wind catches your kite, start letting out string, little by little.(一旦你的风筝起飞了,就开始一点一点地放出风筝线)”,这说明本空应提到“如何让风筝起飞”。故选E项With this added burst of speed, the kite should fly.(有了这一增加的速度,风筝应该能起飞)说明了让风筝起飞的方法,因此E选项符合语境,故选E。
由下文提到的“It’s somewhere between fifty and a hundred feet overhead(它在头顶五十到一百英尺之间)”可知,本空应提到风筝要达到一定的高度,故选D项Keep going till your kite is at the height you want.(继续这样做,直到你的风筝达到你想要的高度)说明了风筝飞到的高度,因此D选项符合语境,故选D。
由下文提到的“Wind up the rest of your string and keep your kite safe until the next time you’re ready to fly it.(把剩下的线卷起来,保证你的风筝安全,直到下次你准备放飞它。)” To finish flying, reel in the kite slowly.(放完风筝后,慢慢地把风筝卷起来。)

A. Exciting. B. Boring.
C. Relaxing. D. Annoying.
5. What made the author’s getting up late early worthwhile
A. Having a swim.

6. What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter
A. They are soft. B. They look nice.
C. They taste great D. They are juicy.
7. What was the author going to that evening

C. Eat in a restaurant. D. Buy fresh vegatables.
C
“Every bottle of Anti-D ever made in Australia has James in it” Robyn Barlow, the Rh program director told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Only 160 donors support the program and finding new donors has proven to be difficult. But Harrison’s retirement from giving blood doesn’t mean he’s completely out of the game. Scientists are collecting and cataloging(列入目录) his DNA to create a library of antibodies and white blood cells that could be the future of the anti-D program in Australia.

10. What can we infer from the passage about Harrison
