What is the worst disease in the world Many people might say it is cancer(癌症). Cancer will kill about 9.6 million people in the world this year, according to World Health Organization. Scientists have been working to find ways to beat cancer. A lot of progress has been made in this field.
James P Allison from the US and Japanese researcher Tasuku Honjo discovered a new kind of cancer treatment(治疗) that earned them the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in October. The new treatment can make our immune systems (免疫系统) strong enough to effectively fight cancer cells. It is hoped that this treatment can be used to treat most cancers in the future.
This is not the only recent improvement in cancer treatment. In November, the US Food and Drug Administration approved (批准) a new cancer drug called Vitrakvi. Instead of being effective only for treating specific types of cancer, this drug can be used to treat 17 different kinds of cancer, including lung cancer and breast cancer, USA Today reported.
Finding cancer as early as possible is the best way to beat it. To check people for cancer, doctors must collect tissue (组织) from a patient's tumor(肿瘤) and test it. This process can take a long time.
But in December, scientists from the University of Queensland in Australia developed a simple cancer test that can find out cancer in a patient's blood. The test takes less than 10 minutes. The test is about 90 percent accurate(准确), the Guardian reported.
With all of these treatments, cancer can be effectively controlled. Honjo believes most kinds of cancer will become treatable by 2050. “Even if we cannot completely eliminate(消除) the tumor, we can survive while still having part of a tumor,” Honjo said at a press conference in Stockholm, Sweden, in December.

It's often said of British people that they are very aware of each other's social rank(级别). Britons can usually work out a person's background from the way they speak or dress, and may even treat them differently based on this. But although this may have been truer in the past than it is today, visitors to Britain say that they still notice it. The comic play Pygmalion (《卖花女》, 1913), by the Irishman George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), is a famous exploration of the importance of social rank in British society.
The main story is about a working class girl, Eliza Doolittle, a flower seller from London. Two upper class gentlemen try to see if they can get Doolittle to appear like an upper class lady after sending her for elocution lessons. Professor Henry Higgins, a language expert, says it can be done; his friend Colonel Pickering says that it's impossible. Even so, Higgins sets out to teach Eliza how to “speak properly”.
Of course, Eliza has her own will. She can see that it's in her best interest to go along with Higgins’ plan to “improve herself”. She wants to be able to sell flowers in a shop rather than on the street. Still, Eliza's willfulness(任性) means that it's a rough task for everyone.
At the beginning of the fourth act, the characters are at home after a dancing ball, at which Eliza proved that a flower girl can pass herself off as a lady after all. She was a winner at the ball, and Higgins has won his bet.
But what happens next She may be able to fool the upper class into thinking she's one of them, but she isn't really one of them.
Shaw seems to be telling us that social rank is about more than the way someone ‘talks--it's about wealth and privilege(特权)’. The whole experiment proves the idea that accents and classes are very superficial(肤浅的). The way one speaks and dresses are only markers of class.
The class system itself, however, is something completely different.
1. According to the passage, in Britain, the way a person speaks and dresses
A. says their social rank B. used to have a strict code
C. could influence others' opinions of them D. is no longer cared about by other people
2. The words “elocution lessons” underlined in Paragraph 2 probably mean_________.
A. dance lessons B. speech lessons C. sales training D. dress courses
3. What happens to Eliza Doolittle during the experiment by Professor Henry Higgins
A. She is forced to give up selling flowers on the street. B. She is unwilling to join in the experiment at first.
C. She is thought of as an upper-class lady at the ball.
D. She is afraid that her true background will be known by other people.
4. What message did Shaw want to show in Pygmalion according to the text
A. People should try to change the way they speak to sound better.
B. One can enter the upper class after receiving proper training.
C. The way someone speaks makes a big difference to their social position.
D. A person's social rank can't truly be judged by the way they look and talk.
