(2022春·江苏盐城·九年级校联考期中)How would you feel if your school banned(禁止) phones in class
In February, the Ministry of Education announced that mobile phones should, in principle(原则上), be banned in primary and secondary schools. This aims to protect students’ eyesight, make sure they focus on their work and prevent them from becoming addicted(上瘾的) to the Internet and online games.
Xu Xiaohe, a 13-year-old from Zhejiang, supports the policy. “In fact, my school has never allowed us to bring our mobile phones,” Xu said. “It’s a distraction from our work. Even adults can’t control themselves, let alone kids like us.”
Li Zihan from Beijing, however, feels differently. The 13-year-old believes that a mobile phone ban is too simplistic for a generation that has grown up with mobile phones. “Students should be taught self-management skills, as well as learn how to use their phones effectively to help with their studies,” Li said. “This might be the best way to deal with technology in modern times.”
For Ge Ziqi, the problem with banning phones has more to do with life outside of school. The 13-year-old Beijinger uses a bike-sharing app every day to travel between her home and school.
“Today, phones are used everywhere, from taking a bus to buying food,” she said. “If I can’t take my phone with me, I’ll have to buy my own bicycle.”
Some schools have come up with ideas to solve problems like Ge’s. At Shanghai Shatian School, for example, students are asked to put their phones in special lockers during school hours. The students call these lockers the “phone farm” (“养机场”) or “phone tarmac” (“停机坪”).

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the creators of Google, want to change your world. Their goal is to make a search engine that always gives you the right information. “It’s a huge goal, Page says, and it’s a long way off.” But Page and Brin are ready for it.
“Imagine if you had a librarian who had the knowledge of Google but could also answer immediately with that knowledge,” says Page. “That would really change the world.”
Both Page and Brin come from math and computer science backgrounds. Page’s father and mother were both computer scientists. So Page’s love for computers started early. He remembers surprising his teachers when he turned in a typed homework paper in primary school.
Brin’s father was a math teacher and Brin’s parents moved to the U.S. from Russia in 1979. Brin says they moved to the U.S. to have more chances. Judging from their son’s success, their move certainly was a great decision!
Page and Brin were students at Stanford University when they first had the idea of creating their now-famous Google search engine. They began the project in Page’s dorm room(宿舍). Brin says he knew Google would be great when he found that he used it all the time.
After collecting money from friends and family, they put Google on the market in 1998. At first, they did 10,000 searches daily. Today they do over 200 million searches—more than 50 percent of all Internet searches.
Both men have surprisingly simple lifestyles. They don’t live in large houses or own expensive cars. Page and Brin also work very hard. They say that setting up a restaurant at their company was one of their best ideas. Why Because they work such long hours that they end up eating most of their meals there! Page and Brin strongly believe that search engines can greatly improve people’s lives.
26.What is Google
27.What made Page’s love for computers start more early than other children
28.Why did Brin’s parents decide to move to the U.S. in 1979

(2022秋·江苏盐城·九年级统考期中)Scientists find that hard-working people can live longer than idle (不工作的) people. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the job-holder. A report shows that whenever the unemployment rate (失业率) increases by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point: Work is helpful to our health.
Why is work good for health It is because work keeps people busy, away from loneliness. Researches show that people feel not only unhappy but also worried when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact with each other. If people take part in some activities, they can find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work sometimes means the loss of everything. It affects man in spirit and makes him easy to get ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment (充实感). Work makes one feel his value in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can know that the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study well and live a happy and healthy life.

(2022秋·江苏淮安·九年级统考期中)When we talk about Chinese folk music, we think of a blind musician whose name is Abing. Abing was born in 1893 in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi. His mother died very early. His father trained him in drums from the age of 10. Abing began learning the dizi at the age of 12, then the erhu. He learned to play many of the local instruments quite well. At the age of 17, Abing first performed in public, which made him well known for his musical talent.
When Abing was 35 years old, he got an eye disease and completely lost the sight of both eyes. From then on, he was known as Blind Abing. He often told people, “I haven’t used the name Hua Yanjun for ages, no one knows it. It’s better if you call me Blind Abing; that’s the name that everyone on the street knows.” Abing became homeless, and he had to make a living as a street performer.
After Abing got married in 1903, he continued to perform every afternoon in a public square in Wuxi. His most famous piece, Erquan Yingyue, was performed in this period. When listening to the moving piece of music, you can sense a strong sadness and pain behind the beauty.
During his lifetime, Abing developed his erhu skills to such a high level that his music spread throughout the country. However, it is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear.
Abing died in 1950. His Erquan Yingyue is still played as a standard erhu piece today. As one of China’s national treasures, it is a piece which all the great erhu masters praise. The sad beauty makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own painful experiences.

“You are going to show me the future,” Scrooge continued. “Am I right, Ghost ” The ghost nodded its head. That was the only answer Scrooge received. “Ghost of the Future,” he said, “I am more afraid of you than of all the other ghosts. But because I want to be a better man, I will go with you. Please, speak to me.” It didn’t reply. The hand pointed straight in front of them. “Lead on!” said Scrooge. The ghost moved forwards. Scrooge followed in the shadow of its robe. And the robe carried him along. The city sprang up around them. There they were, in the heart of it. The Ghost stopped beside some businessmen at the Stock Exchange. His hand was pointing to them, so Scrooge listened to their conversation.
“I only know he’s dead,” said a great fat man.
“When did he die ” asked another.
“Last night, I think.”
“What was the matter with him ” asked a third.
“God knows,” said the first, with a yawn.
“What has he done with his money ” asked a red-faced gentleman.
“I don’t know,” said the great fat man, yawning again. “He hasn’t left it to me. That’s all I know.”

(2022秋·江苏盐城·九年级统考期中)Have you had a headache during a test Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even can’t sleep well at night If so, then you know what stress is. Stress is a feeling when you are worried about something. Too much worry in your mind may make you feel uncomfortable. It can even make your body feel bad or give you a stomachache or a headache. Stress can influence both your mind and body.
However, there are different kinds of stress. Some kinds of stress are good and others are bad. Good stress might happen when you’re called to answer questions in class or when you have to give a speech. This kind of stress can help you to get things better done. For example, you may do a better job in your test if the stress pushes you to prepare better before the test.
On the other hand, bad stress can happen if the stress lasts too long. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is sick, if you’re having problems at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy every day. This kind of stress isn’t going to help you. And it can actually make you sick.
The best way to face the stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you keep yourself in mind: sleep, exercise, leisure (休闲), and food. If you get enough sleep and eat healthily, and if you exercise and leave time for fun, you’ll probably feel less stressed.

Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. These are about making yourself a better person. Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. For example, a student may have to find more time to study.
Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! There are good reasons for this. Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain;
The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup of wine again;
West of the sunny pass no more friends will be seen.
(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
Time flies and you will soon graduate from junior high school. It might be a little sad to say goodbye to your teachers and classmates. This same feeling was shared more than 1,000 years ago, when the Tang dynasty poet Wang Wei(701-761)had to say goodbye to his friend Yuan Er.
The poem begins with a beautiful morning scene. After the rain, the road is clean and free of dust, and the willows by the hotel are fresh and green. On that day’s morning, Yuan Er is leaving for a faraway place called Anxi(in today’s Xinjiang).
The last two lines are the most well-known. The poet invites Yuan to drink wine because he knows that life in Anxi will be tough. Most cities in China were prosperous(繁华的)during the Tang dynasty(618-907), but the western areas were quite desolate(荒凉的). Wang thinks the journey to the west will be full of hardship. So when Wang says “I invite you to drink a cup of wine again”, he is pouring both his care and good wishes into the cup. This sincere love for his friend made this poem popular back then and it remains popular today.

This is one story from the Twenty-four Examples of Filial Piety (孝顺) stories. The stories were chosen and edited by Guo Jujing during the Yuan Dynasty. All the stories are about family conduct (行为) in Chinese history.
In Chinese tradition, filial piety was a very important duty. To be a filial son, one has to completely obey one’s parents during their lifetime. As they grow older, one has to take the best care of them. Today the form of filial piety is a little different from ancient times. People don’t stay in one place for a lifetime. They might study, work and live far away from their parents. The young have their own opinions, which may be different from those of the older generation. The story behind “Bro Shank You”
Row Row Row Your Boat, a traditional English nursery rhyme, which is still popular today, has enjoyed a second wave of popularity because of a Chinese farmer.
Liu Tao, a middle-aged farmer from Yangshuo, Guilin, South China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, loves English and nicknames himself “Teacher Liu” on a short video platform (平台). Netizens (网友) are amused by his funny accent, and tease him calling him “Bro Shank You”.
“In the 1980s, so many international friends came to visit Yangshuo that they even outnumbered the Chinese people on the street. When seeing me, they would say hello.” Liu said. From then on, he dreamed of being an English tour guide.
He then returned home to do farm work, but he never stopped learning English. Borrowing textbooks from friends, Liu began homeschooling.
“Practice makes perfect. Only when I repeat one sentence several times, can I remember it.” Liu even has a diary of oral English where he wrote down many dialogues used in different occasions.
Though the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the local tourism, Liu remains true to his original aspiration. He turned to a short-video platform to introduce his hometown in both Chinese and English.
Some people laugh at Liu’s accent, but most of them show their support for him after hearing his story. “If you had been him, most of you might have given up.” “He is pretty good at self-learning!” “I do admire his thought of introducing his hometown.”
Liu doesn’t feel lost in people’s attention, as he knows too well how transient (转瞬即逝的) people’s attention can be. But he does hope that the audience can get happiness and enjoy the beautiful views of his hometown from his videos.

(2022秋·江苏盐城·九年级校联考期中)Mark Twain is one of the most quoted authors ever. There are hundreds of his quotations (语录) on posters and websites. Here is an example:
“If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” — Mark Twain
Quotations like this one give us guidance. It reminds us that telling a lie is much more difficult than telling the truth. Telling a lie means you have to remember what you said each time you tell the lie. If you tell the truth, there is nothing to remember. He suggests that you shouldn’t lie not because it is wrong, but because it is hard work. Here is another example.
“Always obey your parents when they are present.” — Mark Twain
Again, the quotation gives good advice-to always obey your parents, but the humourous part is when they are present. The quotation tells you to obey your parents when they are there with you-because they can see what you are doing.
Albert Einstein’s quotations are also popular. Many of his quotations are inspirational (鼓舞人心的). This means that they help us to do our best and be the best person we can be. Here is an example:
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.” — Albert Einstein
This is a much more serious quotation than the two Mark Twain ones. It gives us a lot to think about. Also, because this was said by Albert Einstein, it makes us want to take the quotation seriously. This quotation gives us hope that we can learn from any mistake we made yesterday. It reminds us to always look closely at everything we do and ask the right questions to help us achieve our best.

When talking about livestreaming, you might think of makeup vloggers and movie stars. But Zeng Qinghuan, a 30-year-old from Xinhua County in Loudi, Hunan, has turned her whole village into a livestreaming room, using e-commerce to help her people live a better life.
Known as “Xiangmei Xinbao” on Douyin, Zeng now has more than 3 million followers and almost 40 million “likes”. During the past two years, she has posted about 370 short videos showing the culture and life of people in her hometown. Through livestreaming, she has sold more than 100 million yuan worth of local agricultural products, like fermented tofu (腐乳), preserved pork and dried sweet potatoes.

She plans to help train100 social media influencers (网红) for her county within three years, and now two villages have taken part in the project.

At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a busboy (餐厅勤杂工) in a restaurant much like the one we were in. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I blinked (眨眼睛) and was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hardworking waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.
We are all one family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace suffering with joy.

Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk
First, you had to learn how to balance yourself and stand. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power-you’d stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time-you did it!
Now, the next step-walking. You’d seen others do it. It didn’t look that hard-just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong-more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people around you found you walking, they cheered, “Oh, look at what the kid is doing.” This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child-how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering You couldn’t wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.

Elle Luna is a designer, painter, and writer. She used to work as a fantastic designer on apps. However, she gave up her job in her 30s and started the 100-Day Project. It was Michael Bierut who first used the 100-Day Project at the Yale School of Art: each student chose something to do every day for 100 days. For example, one student made a poster in under a minute every day for 100 days; another danced every day and made a video. In 2014, Luna and her group started the 100-Day Project online. Everyone can take part in it. It’s simple — choose a creative project, do it every day for 100 days, and share your process (过程) online. For the 100-Day Project, it’s not just about what you have finished — it’s more about the process. A hundred days! Even Luna herself was questioning before she decided to jump in, “Can I finish it Will I push through when I’m busy Will I share even when I can’t do it well Will I show up every day ” Luna did it anyway. In the first year, Luna herself finished 100 days of self-portraits (自画像). If you can dream it, you can do it. People of different ages joined in. Hillary Patrick, a want-to-be artist and mum of two, finished a project of embroidery (刺绣) while she had to look after two kids. Are you hungry to start a creative project Do you want to be a part of a group that celebrates “process” Start thinking about your project, and invite friends to join, too.

Everybody laughed.
“It will be a very small funeral.” said the great fat man. “I don’t think anybody will go to it.”

(2023·江苏徐州·校考二模)A Farewell Song
No dust is raised on the road wet with morning rain;
The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
I invite you to drink a cup of wine again;
回答以下问题,答案不超过6个单词:
61.Who wrote the poem “A Farewell Song”
62.What did the poet describe in the beginning of the poem
63.Which word in the poem thymes with “green”
64.What will the journey to the west be like

So when Wang says ‘I invite you to drink a cup of wine again’, he is pouring both his care and good wishes into the cup. This sincere love for his friend made this poem popular back then and it remains popular today.” His love/ care/worries/good wishes for his friend.

This is a much more serious quotation than the two Mark Twain ones. It gives us a lot to think about. Also, because this was said by Albert Einstein, it makes us want to take the quotation seriously.
