Sam is autistic. Thus, dining out can be tricky. Though he loves to eat, he dislikes the loud noise during restaurant dining. So he has a solution: overpower all noise with a much louder noise of his own. Faced with a possibility of dining alone all the time, I decided to work on dining skills at a trendy new spot early one Tuesday night.
To my delight, we arrived at an empty restaurant. So far, so good. Everything went well until two older and elegantly-dressed women entered. They were seated two tables away from us. I felt a sense of impending doom.
The women began to chat, paying little notice to us. Sam happily took this as his cue(暗示) to start talking and drown them out. I leaned into Sam and asked for a quiet voice, but unfortunately Sam had left that voice at home.
I glanced at the neighboring table, knowing we wouldn’t go unnoticed much longer. I quickly used Plan B: eat quickly and leave. Sam, who normally inhales food, suddenly embraced the concept of leisurely dining and refused to rush — all while chattering away endlessly.
“SHUSH!” I said, a little annoyed. Sam responded by giggling loudly. “Be quiet!”
Now the two women were watching us. The older of the two women leaned over. “Here it comes!” I thought. She completely surprised me when she said, “Honey, stop shushing that boy. He has something important to say. I have friends that talk way more than he does, and they aren’t nearly as interesting.”
Then she asked Sam, “Now, boy, Don’t you listen to your mom. You talk as much as you want. I want to hear everything you have to say.” Turning to me, she added, “You have a delightful boy. Relax and enjoy your dinner—and don’t let him skip the chocolate cake. It’s unmissable.”
I will always remember those two lovely ladies. Their kindness meant the world to a stressed-out mom. Wherever they are, we’re sending them lots of love and hopes for chocolate cake.
4. What can we learn about the author and Sam from paragraph 1
A. Few like to have dinner with them. B. Sam suffers physically and mentally.
C. The author has no idea how to dine out. D. Sam enjoys talking loudly when dining out.
5. How did the author feel about their being noticed by the two women
A. Thrilled. B. Annoyed. C. Regretful. D. Embarrased.
6. What did one of the women suggest Sam do
A. Express himself freely. B. Follow his mom’s order.
C. Listen to everything she said. D. Relax and enjoy the dinner.
7. What could be the most suitable title for the passage
A. My Autistic Son. B. Chocolate Cake.
C. Two Helping hands. D. The Pleasure of Eating.
A 5. D 6. A 7. B

When it comes to work, workers, and jobs, much of the concern of the modern age boils down to the fear that we’re witnessing the final stage of the game, and that there will be nowhere for humans to withdraw as machines take over the last few tasks. The most recent example comes from the use of artificial intelligence (AI). Is there no area of human experience that can’t be replaced by AI And if not, what is left for humans to do except the tasks involved in taking care of the machines
At the heart of this concern is our desire for good jobs — jobs that make the most of workers’ natural abilities and where the work provides the worker with motivation and work-life balance. More importantly, good jobs support workers in learning by doing — and, in so doing, deliver benefits on three levels: to the worker, who gains in personal development and job satisfaction; to the organization, which reforms as staff find new problems to solve and opportunities to pursue; and to the community as a whole, which harvests the economic benefits of hosting positive organizations and workers. This is what makes good jobs productive for the organization, as well as engaging and fulfilling for the worker.
Does the ongoing advance of AI threaten to get rid of all the learning, creativity, and meaning that make a job a good job Certainly, some have blamed technology for just such an outcome. Headlines today often express concern over technological innovation resulting in bad jobs for humans, or even the complete disappearance of certain professions. Some fear that further technology advancement in the workplace will result in jobs where employees are being asked to work in split times or for longer periods over more days.
The problem here isn’t the technology; rather, it’s the way the technology is used — and, more than that, the way people think about using it.
8. What is the passage mainly about
A. How to take care of the AI machines.
B. The relations between workers and jobs.
C. The human’s fears in the age of AI.
D. Human experiences were replaced by AI.
9. What jobs are supposed to be good according to the passage
A. Those that mainly have the economic benefits.
B. The ones that offer chances to progress professionally.
C. Those that make full use of workers’ motivation.
D. The ones that don’t bring new problems to workers.
10. How do news media respond to the development of AI
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Optimistic. D. Unknown.
11. What will the author probably talk about next
A. The future jobs humans will do.
B. The application of AI in the future.
C. The ways that humans do jobs.
D. The proper attitude towards AI.
C 9. B 10. A 11. D

The deep-sea oil and gas industry has vast and costly facilities to maintain. Wells, other equipment, and thousands of kilometers of pipelines must be inspected and repaired.
Now, cutting-edge underwater drones (无人机) and robots are being developed that could make the work safer and cheaper. Among them is Eelume, a six-meter-long, snake-like robot equipped with sensors and a camera at each end. It can be kept at a station at depths of up to half a kilometer for six months, without being brought back to the surface. The robot can travel up to 20 kilometers before needing to return to its station to recharge.
Maintenance work at many deep-water wells and pipeline systems is already carried out by unmanned vehicles. But these vehicles typically need to be transported to the offshore site on a fully crewed ship and then remotely operated from onboard the surface ship. That can cost up to $100,000 per day, according to P l Liljeb ck, chief technology officer with Eelume Subsea Intervention, which developed the robot. Liljeb ck says that by “enabling the robot to become a subsea resident living at a station, it can be mobilized at any time to do inspections, thereby reducing the need for costly surface ships”.
Eelume can work autonomously on tasks assigned from a control room onshore, and send back video and data. Its snake-like design allows it to work in small spaces and wriggle (扭动) its body to stay in place in strong currents. By staying under the sea, it can carry out tasks whatever the conditions on the surface of the ocean.
The global underwater robotics market is expected to be worth around $7 billion in 2025, according to analysts, and other companies are in the process of commercializing new deep-sea drone and robot technology. Eelume Subsea Intervention will carry out final testing on the seabed later this year at the sgard oil and gas field. It expects to put its first snake robots into use next year and hopes to have up to 50 in oceans around the world by 2027.
12. What is one feature of Eelume
A. It can travel nearly 40 kilometers before recharging.
B. It can dive as deep as 500 meters.
C. It works mainly around the station.
D. It works for 6 months on one charge.
13. What is the problem with unmanned vehicles
A. They are too costly to maintain.
B. They are hard to operate remotely.
C. They require transportation to and from work.
D. They have to work on a fully crewed ship all the time.
14. What can be expected of Eelume in the future
A. It will require no further tests.
B. It will be worth around $ 7 billion.
C It will be put on the market in 2027.
D. It will face a lot of competitors.
15. What is the main idea of the passage
A. A snake robot is on its way for underwater tasks.
B. Eelume is the new choice for constructing pipelines.
C. Maintenance work on the ocean floor is a risky job.
D. Unmanned vehicles marketing has seen strong growth.
A 13. C 14. D 15. A

So many people are feeling burnt out and “phone-overwhelmed.” Smartphones definitely aren’t “evil” or “bad”, and people of all ages are struggling to find a “balance”. What’s the solution Actually you don’t necessarily need to flush your brand new iPhone down the toilet or vow to never. Things don’t have to be that black or white. ___16___ Here are a few simple steps that I suggest.
1. Make a plan. If you want to earn a college degree, you select specific classes happening at specific times and you attend them. This keeps you on track, moving steadily towards your goal. You can apply that same logic to your smartphone usage. Choose specific times(say, 8 a. m. , 12 p. m. , and 4 p. m. ) when you intend to check in to read texts, social media updates, and so on, and then do your best to stick to the plan. ___17___
2. ___18___ If your phone is continually bleeping and pinging every-time “something happens”, it’s going to be tough for you to stay focused on whatever you’re trying to do—you’ll be tempted to check in and see what’s up! It may seem obvious to turn off those noisy notifications. Better yet, turn the volume on your phone down to zero or power down your phone completely. If you’re concerned that you might miss something important, you can create a “call filter” so that certain people’s calls come through even if your phone is on “silent”. That way you can rest easy, knowing that you will never miss something that is truly urgent.
3. Make dinnertime a phone-free zone. For many couples and families, dinnertime is the only time of the day when everyone is gathered together in one place. Make dinner a special, sacred time. No phones at the table. ___19___ Even if you’re dining alone, set your laptop or phone aside and enjoy your meal without techie distractions.
4. Ask yourself, “What am I desiring right now ” ___20___ Check in with yourself and see what you want. Do you seek out company Do you want some excitement or entertainment Inspiration Attention Whatever you want, see if you can find a non-phone-related way to give it to yourself. Take a walk or pop by a friend’s house just to say “hi”. Feeding your spirit in the “real world”, you may discover that the “phone world” just isn’t that appealing anymore.
A. Listen to your phone call carefully.
B. Enjoy the sound of silence to the fullest.
C. If people get restless or bored, strike up an interesting conversation by playing a question game.
D. No matter what kinds of feelings come up, taking some phone-free time is a valuable experience that can teach you a lot about yourself.
E. Create phone-routines that help you to create the kind of day (and life) that you want.
F. When you feel the urge to check your phone, and you don’t really “need” to, pause for a moment.
G. But you can take specific steps to create healthier, more balanced relations with technology.
G 17. E 18. B 19. C 20. F
根据空前的“Smartphones definitely aren’t “evil” or “bad”, and people of all ages are struggling to find a “balance”. What’s the solution (智能手机绝对不是“邪恶”或“坏”的,所有年龄段的人都在努力寻找一种“平衡”。解决办法是什么?)”可知,此处提出本文要讲述的话题,如何与科技建立一种平衡,根据空前的“Actually you don’t necessarily need to flush your brand new iPhone down the toilet or vow to never. Things don’t have to be that black or white.(事实上,你没必要把你的新iPhone冲到马桶里,或者发誓永远不会再使用。事情不是非黑即白的。)”可知,为建立一种平衡,没必要把手机扔到马桶里,或者发誓再不会使用手机,结合空后的“Here are a few simple steps that I suggest.(以下是我建议的几个简单步骤。)”可知,此空处应为引出下文,与解决寻找一种“平衡”相关,G选项“But you can take specific steps to create healthier, more balanced relations with technology.(但你可以采取具体措施,与科技建立更健康、更平衡的关系。)”
, 12 p. m. , and 4 p. m. ) when you intend to check in to read texts, social media updates, and so on, and then do your best to stick to the plan.(选择特定的时间(比如,早上8点、下午12点和下午4点)。当你打算签到看短信、更新社交媒体等,然后尽你最大的努力坚持这个计划。)”可知,坚持自己制定的计划,由此可知,此空应为如此做的结果或者影响,E选项“Create phone-routines that help you to create the kind of day (and life) that you want.(建立使用手机的惯例,帮助你创造你想要的一天(和生活)。)”
分析语篇可知,此空处为本段的主题句,与其他段落的主题句句式一致,应为祈使句,根据空后的“If your phone is continually bleeping and pinging every-time “something happens”, it’s going to be tough for you to stay focused on whatever you’re trying to do—you’ll be tempted to check in and see what’s up! It may seem obvious to turn off those noisy notifications. Better yet, turn the volume on your phone down to zero or power down your phone completely.(如果你的手机每次“有事情发生”就不停地发出哔哔声,那么你就很难集中精力去做你想做的事情——你会忍不住去查看一下发生了什么!
可知,本段讲述的是在晚餐时间成为无手机时间,根据空前的“Even if you’re dining alone, set your laptop or phone aside and enjoy your meal without techie distractions.(即使你一个人吃饭,也要把笔记本电脑或手机放在一边,在没有科技产品干扰的情况下享受美食。)”
根据本段的主题句“Ask yourself, “What am I desiring right now ”(问问你自己,“我现在想要什么 ”)”可知,本段讲述的是在想使用手机时,要问问自己现在想要什么,F选项“When you feel the urge to check your phone, and you don’t really “need” to, pause for a moment.(当你觉得想要查看手机的冲动,而你并不是真的“需要”这样做的时候,暂停一下。)”

Amphibian (两栖动物) species are disappearing at an alarming rate across the globe due to habitat loss, pollution, and disease. FrogWatch trainings cover the importance of amphibians in the environment, how monitoring our local frog population helps to protect them, factors to consider in choosing a site to monitor, how to identify frog species by their calls and how to report findings to FrogWatch USA. Become a citizen scientist with FrogWatch USA, and help save our frogs!
Date: Saturday, June 4, 1:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m.
Price: $10household (includes up to 2 adults and 2 children age 8+)
Training instruction:
FrogWatch trainings cover the importance of amphibians in the environment. The instruction focuses on how to:
1. monitor our local frog population to protect the species;
2. determine factors when choosing a site to monitor;
3. recognize frog species by their calls;
4. report findings to FrogWatch USA.
After passing a test on identifying frog calls at the end of the training, certified volunteers then commit themselves to monitoring a local amphibian habitat (such as a pond or lake) approximately once a week for about 15 minutes, and collecting /submitting data on what they hear. Data collected will be added to a national FrogWatch USA database. In 2020, Rhode Island FrogWatch citizen scientists followed 80 sites almost 900 times! In those 900 observations, FrogWatchers, heard more than 1,220 frog choruses.
Questions: Contact Programs@rwpzoo.org or call (401)785-3510 ext. 358.

C. It will be put on the market in 2027.
