Jacqueline Felice de Almania (c.1322) highlights the doubt that women practicing medicine faced. Born to a Jewish family in Florence, she moved to Paris where she worked as a physician and performed surgery. In 1322 she was charged for practicing unlawfully. In spite of the court hearing evidence of her ability as a doctor, she was banned from medicine.
Tan Yunxian (1461-1554) was a Chinese physician who learned her skills from her grandparents. Chinese women at that time could not serve apprenticeships (学徒期) with doctors. James Barry (c.1789-1865) was born Margaret Bulkley in Ireland but, dressed as a man, she was accepted by Edinburgh University to study medicine. She qualified as a surgeon in 1813, then joined the British Army, serving overseas. Barry retired in 1859, having practiced her entire medical profession living and working as a man.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler (1831-1895) worked as a nurse for eight years before studying in medical college in Boston in 1860. Four years later, she was the first African American woman to receive a medical degree. She moved to Virginia in 1865, where she provided medical care to freed slaves.

Canadian educator and anthropologist Isabel Crook, who pioneered English language teaching in New China and was a recipient of the Friendship Medal, China’s highest honor for foreigners, died on August 20th in Beijing at the age of 108.
Crook, who lived and worked in China for more than 90 years, witnessed and participated in developing China’s foreign language education, according to a eulogy(悼词)released by Beijing Foreign Studies University, where she taught English for more than 70 years. She cultivated many foreign language talents in China and made significant contributions to China’s education, its friendly cooperation with other countries, and its people-to-people exchanges, the eulogy said. She helped compile China’s first English language textbooks for college students and was instrumental in English discipline building, reform and teachers’ development.
Crook was born on December 15th, 1915, to a Canadian missionary family in Chengdu, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. At the age of 23, she graduated from the University of Toronto in Canada and started field research in rural parts of Sichuan. She met her future husband, David Crook, in China in the early 1940s. In 1947, the couple was warmly welcomed by the Communist Party of China to observe and study the revolutionary land reform taking place in the country. A year later, they accepted an invitation to teach at what is now BFSU. David Crook passed away in 2000 at the age of 90.
In a recent interview, their son Michael Crook said the secret to his mother’s long life was that she always had a mission, which made her life very meaningful. Two days before she died, Isabel Crook attended a public event organized by BFSU and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the university said. Honoring her wishes, there won’t be a public funeral, and her remains will be donated for medical research, it added.

Scientists in the Netherlands have trained bees to identify COVID-19 through their sense of smell, according to a press release from Wageningen University. The research was conducted on more than 150 bees in Wageningen University’s research lab.
The scientists trained the bees by treating them with a sugar-water solution — every time they were exposed to the smell of samples infected with COVID-19. Each time the bees were exposed to a non-infected sample, they wouldn’t get a reward. Eventually, the bees could identify an infected sample within a few seconds — and would then stick out their tongues like clockwork to collect the sugar water.
Bees aren’t the first animals to detect COVID-19 by smell. Researchers have also trained dogs to tell the difference between positive and negative COVID-19 samples from human saliva (唾液) or sweat with fairly high levels of accuracy. A German study found that dogs could identify positive COVID-19 samples 94% of the time. That’s because the coronavirus makes an infected person’s body smell slightly different from those of a non-infected person. But researchers still aren’t sure whether animals are the best bet for smelling out COVID-19 cases outside the lab.
“No one is saying they can replace a PCR machine, but they could be very promising,” Holger Volk, a neurologist, told Nature. PCR machines are what lab technicians use to process standard COVID-19 tests. At the very least, certain animals could be useful for identifying COVID-19 in places or countries in which high-tech lab equipment is not enough or inaccessible.
Wageningen scientists are working on a machine that can train bees at once. Then bees can use their skills to test for coronavirus aerosols (气溶胶) in the surrounding environment.
28. How did the researchers teach the bees to identify COVID-19
A. By infecting bees with the virus.
B. By exposing bees to infected humans.
C. By raising bees with sugar water.
D. By offering bees some rewards.
29. Why are dogs able to find out positive COVID-19 samples
A. They can watch for the hidden virus.
B. They can feel samples’ inner changes.
C. They have a sharp sense of smell.
D. They react more quickly than bees.
30.What does the underlined word “ treating” in Paragraph 2 mean
Curing.
Entertaining.
Assessing.
Interacting.
31. What is the follow-up task of Wageningen scientists
A. To keep track of more bees.
B. To detect coronavirus aerosols.
C. To help underdeveloped countries.
D. To develop a new type of machine.

Cali Scores a Goal
It was the last game of the season. Cali had been playing soccer all summer. She really enjoyed running around with the other players in her bright blue uniform, chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. As much as she tried, though, Cali still had not scored one single goal.
“Don’t give up,” said her coach. Before each game, they had a practice session. He showed Cali and her team how to pass the ball to each other and take shots at the goal. Cali was pretty good at passing the ball, but even during practices, she couldn’t kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit soccer for good.
“Don’t give up,” said her teammates. Some had been playing soccer for a couple of years, and some were new to the game just like her. “You just need to keep trying and you will get better.” So Cali stayed on the team and did her best.
“Don’t give up,” said Uncle George and Aunt Lisa. But it was half-time, and Cali was feeling frustrated. She was trying! Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. She thought maybe she would try a different sport next summer.

Outer Space Explorations
We had an argument over whether it is necessary to carry out outer space explorations at a class meeting the other day. Different students have different attitudes towards it.
Some of us think it important to research the outer space because, first of all, people can get a better understanding of the outer space through their exploration. Second, new resources can be found there for human being. Third, this exploration can possibly bring about new living space for human life in the near future.
However, others are strongly against it. They believe that it takes so much money to do this kind of exploration, which is not worth the value. Besides,it is very dangerous for astronauts to do such work in the outer space.
In my opinion, people should be pioneering, and therefore such explorations into the outer space are worth trying out.
The break was over and the referee blew her whistle to start the game again. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Cali bent tied up her shoelace and heard her aunt whisper in her ear. “Look for an opportunity to get the ball. You can do it.” Cali stood up and took a deep breath. The score was tied with one goal each. The opposing team was pretty good, but Cali’s blue team was fast. Cali didn’t hesitate and tried to find an opportunity.
Cali watched the ball go back and forth between the players. She dashed over to the ball. She dribbled it between her feet, moving forward toward the net of the opposing team. By the time the other girls had noticed, Cali was positioned right in front of the net. The keeper reached out her gloved hand. The ball touched the tips of her fingers as it swooshed past, right into the top corner of the net. The referee blew her whistle. “Goal!”
