(2022秋·河北承德·高二校联考期中)Carbon dioxide emissions from transportation are now thought as the top source of greenhouse gases. One of the most effective ways to reduce your carbon footprint is to reconsider how much, and how often, you travel.
Going car free for a year could save about 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide, according to a study from the University of British Columbia. How can you stop using a car Try taking a train, bus or better yet, riding a bike.
But let’s be realistic. You will likely need to use a car this year. So, when you do, here are some tips to make your trip more climate-friendly. Driving efficiently can help to reduce emissions. Go easy on the gas and brakes and drive like you have an egg under your foot. Regularly service your car to keep it more efficient. Keeping your tires pumped correctly can reduce emissions. Low tire pressure will hurt your fuel economy. Air conditioning and frequent city driving can make emissions go up. So cut down on these as often as possible. Use cruise control(定速巡航)on long drives-in most cases, this can help to save gas. Don’t weigh your car down with extra things that you don’t need on your trip.
Fly often Taking one fewer long round-trip flight could reduce your personal carbon footprint significantly. If you use public transportation often and fly less, your carbon footprint might still be relatively sustainable, but if you drive and fly a lot, your emissions will be higher. If you can’t avoid flying, you can offset them by donating money to sustainable projects, such as supplying efficient stoves to rural homes, or projects which help farmers deal with crop waste environmentally.

(2022秋·河北沧州·高二统考期中)Plenty of scientific work proves that children, and even adults, who learn sign language, gain the benefits not only in the ability to communicate with other sign language users, but also in the wider academic world.
Deaf children who learn sign language at an early age are more academically inclined (倾向) to do well. This is partly due to their increased ability to communicate with those around them. However, it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complete and complex (复杂的) language system. Thus, children who learn sign language have already learnt about the way language works, which will help in future studies.
Again, for non-deaf children and adults who learn sign language, the academic advantages spill over into social and cultural ones. Firstly, learning sign language allows the speaker to communicate with a whole new community of people and gain an understanding of how they communicate within their community. Secondly, learning a language gives rise to greater confidence for that person, as he is able to converse with someone who may struggle to do so. And the skills of language learning are easily transferable into learning other languages but also into other academic pursuits.
There can be no doubt that learning sign language is a useful endeavour for anyone — whether they are deaf themselves and live in a house with other deaf people or whether they are non-deaf and do not know anyone who is. The social, cultural and academic advantages of learning this complex language are diverse and should not be taken lightly. And, especially with children, learning a language which helps people with a disadvantage may encourage them in the future to do more — volunteering and other such work. This means that the non-deaf child can be given a sense of social responsibility at an early age and taught to embrace (接受) all people — not in spite of their differences but because of them.
8.What is sign language according to the author
A.It is a creative way of expressing ideas.
B.It is a complete complex language system.
C.It is a primary language of disabled people.
D.It is a system of gestures representing words
9.What does the underlined word “endeavour” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Effort. B.Experiment. C.Incident. D.Feedback.
10.What quality can a non-deaf child who learns sign language acquire
A.Being competitive. B.Being courageous.
C.Being responsible. D.Being positive.
11.What conclusion can we draw from the text
A.Learning sign language can bring children pleasure.
B.Sign language helps a person broaden his or her horizons.
C.Deaf children have the ability to learn sign language quickly.
D.Learning sign language possesses numerous and diverse advantages.
(2022秋·河北沧州·高二统考期中)The government of Tanzania has set up a high-speed Internet service on Mount Kilimanjaro. The government says the service will promote safety for climbers. But it will also allow people to post selfies as they work their way up Africa’s tallest mountain.
At 19, 300 feet (about 5,895 meters), Mount Kilimanjaro, is the highest mountain in Africa. It’s also the world’s tallest mountain that’s not part of a mountain range. About 35,000 people every year are trying to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. But climbing such a tall, glacier-covered mountain isn’t easy. Nape Nnauye, Tanzania’s information minister, said that in the past, “It was a bit dangerous for visitors-without Internet.”
The new Internet service should make it easier for climbers to reach the top of the mountain. They’ll be able to use the Internet to check maps and find their way as well as call for help if they need it. Currently, the new service reaches more than halfway up the mountain. The government says that by the end of the year, climbers will be able to get Internet even at the very top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The government says safety is the main reason for setting up the Internet service on the mountain. But Tanzania depends heavily on tourists. In 2019, tourists were responsible for about 17% of all the money produced in Tanzania. Having people post pictures and videos on social media as they climb Mount Kilimanjaro could certainly make the spot even more popular with tourists. Some people in Tanzania are upset that the government is focusing on Internet for tourists instead of the people who live in the country.
Last year, the government approved a $72 million plan to build a cable car (缆车) on Mount Kilimanjaro. The idea was to allow tourists who weren’t climbers to enjoy the mountain. But the project made climbers and guides angry. It also bothered people who were worried about how the project might affect the environment on the mountain.

(2022秋·河北沧州·高二统考期中)Compared with physicists such as Marie Curie or Richard Feynman, Wu Chien-shiung is not a household name in China but she was one of the most influential nuclear physicists of the 20th century, one that “completely” changed human’s view of the universe.
Wu’s father, Wu Zhongyi, founded the first school for girls in Taicang, aiming to break the old idea that it was women’s virtue to have no talents, which had the greatest influence on Wu Chien-shiung’s life. Working in the scientific world dominated (支配) by men, she never gave up or lowered her standards even if unequally treated. After graduating from the former National Central University in Nanjing in 1934, Wu registered at the University of California, Berkeley at the age of 24 to continue her study in physics.
During her 44-year career as a nuclear physicist, Wu’s pioneering achievements won her nicknames such as “Chinese Madame Curie”, “queen of nuclear research” and “first lady of physics”. She was the first woman to be president of American Physical Society, the first female winner of the Comstock Prize in physics given by the US National Academy of Sciences, the first person to receive the Wolf Prize in physics, the first honorary doctorate awarded by Princeton University to a woman, and the first female professor of physics in the history of Columbia University.
To get accurate results from experiments, she worked very hard day and night at a laboratory and gained a reputation (名声) for accuracy. There was a saying among physicists: If the experiment was done by Wu, it must be correct. She was always very careful in experiments, spending a great deal of time calibrating (校准) instruments. She didn’t start collecting data until she fully understood the instruments. Her experiments overturned many previous experimental results and theories, said Samuel Chao Chung Ting, American physicist and Nobel Prize winner.

(2022秋·福建福州·高二校考期中)The essence (本质) of fast fashion is to make clothes inexpensively and quickly, to get new trends and styles into stores and online as soon as possible, and it comes at a high social and environmental cost. Keeping production costs low means they can make their clothes cheap, using cheap labour in unsafe working conditions, and in countries with bad environmental regulations.
Throw-away culture is deeply rooted in our society; three in five of our clothing pieces are thrown out within a year. Fast fashion brands keep the consumers hungry and feeling like they need more by attracting them with newness and convincing the consumers that they need what they’re selling. This only results in increasing textile (纺织品) waste as people no longer want but throw it away.
Criticisms of the fast fashion industry include its negative environmental impact: water pollution, the use of toxic (有毒的) chemicals and increasing levels of textile waste. Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water globally, after agriculture. Fast fashion companies rely on their products being made cheaply and quickly, so they avoid talking when it comes to being aware of their impact on the environment. Greenpeace’s recent Detox Campaign showed that many brands use toxic and dangerous chemicals in their supply chains, and many of the chemicals are either banned or strictly controlled in lots of countries.
In conclusion, the fast fashion industry has a bad effect on our environment through fast fashion brands’ ecological practices and only continues to make the problem last for a long time in the future through extreme consumerist culture. In order for change to happen, the common people need to open their eyes and take measures to prevent the fast fashion from growing.

C.They save the cost of advertising. D.They are made in unsafe countries.
22.How does our society think of throwing away clothes according to the author
A.Positive. B.Surprising. C.Natural. D.Puzzling.
23.What’s the way to change fast fashion mentioned in the text
A.Changing fast fashion brands’ working conditions.
B.Changing clothes stores ‘sales model.
C.Introducing stricter laws for factories.
D.Raising public awareness of preventing fast fashion.

(2021秋·广东·高二华中师范大学海丰附属学校校考期中)A new study suggests that dark markings on the planet Mars represent sand — not water. The research in 2015 suggested that lines on some Martian hills were evidence of water. Yet American scientists now say these lines appear more like dry flows of sand. If water is present, it is likely to be a small amount. Water in liquid form would be necessary for microbial (微生物的) life.
NASA, the American space agency, said more research is needed. Michael Meyer is the lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration programme. He noted that the latest study does not reject the presence of water. But he admitted, “It just may not be as exciting as the idea of rivers going down the sides of cliffs (悬崖).”
The new findings come from a team led by Colin Dundas of the United States Geological Survey. His team measured 151 of these lines in 10 areas. Most of the lines end with slopes (倾斜) between 28 degrees and 35 degrees. These measurements are similar to active sand dunes (沙丘) on both Mars and Earth. A small covering of dust that moves and sometimes becomes lighter might help explain the markings. They usually appear in the Martian summertime, and then disappear until the next year. If these lines are dry, this suggests that recent Mars bas not had large amounts of liquid water. Dundas and his research team say that many questions remain.
“I still think that Mars has great potential for having had life early on in its history,” Meyer said. “As long as that’s true, we also have a reasonable possibility of life still being on Mars. It just happens to be cryptic or well hidden.”
NASA currently has no robotic — either on Mars or in development — with the ability to climb steep slopes. The lack of such equipment has engineers coming up with ideas like Martian helicopters or planes without pilots.
32.What do American scientists find on Mars now according to their study
A.A lot of little life. B.An amount of water.
C.Some Martian hills. D.Dark markings are sand.
33.When do the markings come out
A.In Martian spring. B.In Martian summer.
C.In Martian autumn. D.In Martian winter.
34.What’s Meyer’s opinion about having life on Mars
A.Doubtful. B.Trustful. C.Unconcerned D.Objective.
35.What does the underlined word “cryptic” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Undiscovered. B.Strange. C.Magical. D.Icy.

(2022秋·河北沧州·高二统考期中)Gardening has benefits for our physical and mental health, and even for people who are not totally mobile, they can gain great health benefits. So let’s take a look at all these benefits.
Help fight diseases. We are somewhat like plants. We can technically photosynthesize (进行光合作用). 43 However, we don’t make food from it, we make happiness. Our skin absorbs the sunlight to make vitamin D.Only 30 minutes in the sun can create between 8,000 and 50,000 IU of vitamin D in us. It is so essential for body functions in our bones and immune system (免疫系统). 44
Boost (提升) mood. Gardening boosts your mood, even if it is not sunny. 45 This study suggested that gardening fights stress like nothing else. It does this even better than a great deal of other hobbies.
Increase weight loss. If you love plants, you will be glad to know that gardening is considered exercise. You can actually burn a good 330 calories doing just a single hour of light gardening outdoors. 46 So, even if you do not do any other activity, gardening every day can help you lose those extra pounds while getting vitamin D, and some fresh air.
47 One of the biggest problems in older age is loneliness and a lack of connection. We all have got a taste of this in recent years. Gardening gives you a chance to feel a connection. Many people who are passionate gardeners will often find themselves talking to their plants, not in a strange or crazy way, but in a way that feels like a connection.
A.Offer a feeling of connection.
B.There was a study done in the Netherlands.
C.This is how plants make food from sunlight.
D.Give people a chance to socialize with others.
E.This actually burns more than walking for an hour.
F.Working in the garden means that every muscle group gets work out of some form.
G.Sunlight literally helps our bodies fight off illnesses in a way we never might have thought.
(2022秋·福建泉州·高二校考期中)We’ve all heard the expression, “Money doesn’t buy happiness.” Since happiness is a side effect of laughter, shift your focus from the secret of happiness to experiences that bring you laughter. Instead of asking yourself “How can I be happy ”, ask “What makes me laugh ” This approach creates space for more actionable practices. 48
Look at the situation through a child’s eyes.
When times get stressful, take a moment to think about how you saw things as a kid. The more we can experience that childlike wonder and enthusiasm, the less we sweat even the big stuff.
Add laughter to your mornings.
49 Therefore, laughter should be right up there with brushing your teeth on your priority list. If you’re short on time, kill two birds and brush your teeth to a funny YouTube clip (短视频)!
Learn to laugh at yourself.
Relieving yourself of pressure is the joy of learning to laugh at yourself. It also allows you to show more of your true self. 50 And set an intention to find humor in hardship. Merely laughing will fight off depression and fill you with light.
51
There is no better way to practice laughing at yourself than going outside your comfort zone. From learning German to taking up rollerblading and Zumba, plenty of new activities will fuel your laughter. With so many ways to laugh more, why wait for your bit of happiness 52 A bit of laughter can be the best medicine!
A.Hang out with friends.
B.Take up something new.
C.Permit yourself to be silly.
D.Morning routines set the tone for the entire day.
E.Read on four ways to get your daily amount of laughter.
F.Money doesn’t buy happiness but it can help us find happiness.
G.Instead, try any of the ideas above, and start feeling better now.

1.细节理解题。根据第二段“How can you stop using a car Try taking a train, bus or better yet, riding a bike. (你怎么能停止开车?试着坐火车、公共汽车,或者骑自行车。)”和第三段“But let’s be realistic. You will likely need to use a car this year.(但让我们现实一点。今年你可能需要用车。)”可知,作者认为不使用汽车是不切实际的。故选A。
2.推理判断题。根据第三段“Low tire pressure will hurt your fuel economy. Air conditioning and frequent city driving can make emissions go up So cut down on these as often as possible. Use cruise control(定速巡航)on long drives—in most cases, this can help to save gas. Don’t weigh your car down with extra things that you don’t need on your trip.( 轮胎气压过低会影响你的燃油经济性。空调和频繁的城市驾驶会使排放上升,所以尽可能减少这些排放。在长途驾驶中使用巡航控制——在大多数情况下,这可以帮助节省汽油。不要给你的车添置旅途中不需要的额外物品。)”可知适当的保养汽车可以节省汽车的燃油,故选A。
3.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“If you can’t avoid flying, you can offset them by donating money to sustainable products, such as supplying efficient stoves to rural homes, or projects which help farmers deal with crop waste environmentally.
