Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my first hour math test. I was confident of getting good grades. Then I left my house. Ten minutes later, I was settled with my friends on the school bus. We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped over someone’s foot accidentally and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted the jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. I read two more chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. It wasn’t long before there went the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheerleading team in the dining hall. Then I couldn’t help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking. I smiled at him quickly and looked away.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After a little practice, we nailed the cheer, so we decided we only needed to go through it one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans split down the middle of my backside.
I froze. I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing, and I saw them pointing at my torn jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

It was an afternoon on the eve of Thanksgiving. The sky was thick with clouds. I had finally finished my month-long business trip to San Francisco and was on my way to the airport to get home for the Thanksgiving dinner with my parents. After what seemed like hours, I finally arrived the airport. It began raining, witch made me even more anxious to get home and enjoy the warmth from my family.
I walked into the hall of terminal(航站楼) and found it surprisingly crowded. Shortly after, I heard the airport announcement that many flights were delayed(延迟) due to bad weather. And there was no certainty as to how long the delay would be. As soon as this announcement was made, the hall was filled with the sound to express their disappointment and helplessness. And it quickly turned the noises from people making a call, probably to tell the person on the other end of the line about the flight delay.
There was a sense of anxiety and worry in the air. I thought many people here were just like me, looking forward to the festive reunion with their families and afraid of missing it due to flight delay. But there was nothing to do but wait.
I just had to seat myself and wait patiently for the arrival of the good news that the flight was resuming(继续).Shortly after I sat down, a group of graceful men sitting opposite me drew my special attention. What they had in common was that they all had a musical instrument with them. It seemed like they were an orchestra(管弦乐队).
Everyone waited for a long time feeling down, and the atmosphere was not relaxing a bit. Then I saw one of them, an elegantly mannered man, stand up. One by one, he said something to his partners in a low voice. Each nodded as he listened. After that, they rose up and walked out of the crowds. I didn’t pay any more attention to where they were going.

It was a rainy December day. I headed to the store to pick up another week’s worth of food with my son Bob. There was a little displeasure on his face.
I had put off shopping for Christmas presents until later in the month because of my work schedule. But I wasn’t looking forward to the crowd of Christmas shoppers when seeing the long line of people outside the store.
I kept the CD player on while I drove to avoid the radio news. It only spoke of the world’s huge problems and how divided we all still were. And it just left me feeling helpless.
We hurried into the store past the Salvation Army bell-ringer. I had always enjoyed putting something in his kettle (小壶) before. I gave my son a dollar and asked him to put in the kettle at the door, although he didn’t know why I should do that.
I told Bob to pick the present he wanted despite the price and I would manage to collect the food, so that we could leave the store as soon as possible. He nodded his head and started to run towards the door.
We went in and soon filled our cart (手推车) with food and his presents. Then we walked towards the self-checkout machines. I hated using them. I much preferred to chat with the friendly cashiers, but the line there was that long and I just didn’t have the time.
As I pulled my cart up, I heard the man at the machine next to me complaining under his breath, trying his hardest not to lose his temper. He only had a few things but every time he put his well-worn twenty dollar bill into the machine, it spit it back out (退回). And the shoppers behind us started to become restless.

A merchant(商人)sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest man . The young man wandered through the desert for a long time until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man the young man was looking for.
In the castle, he saw merchants coming and going, people talking in the corners and a small band playing beautiful music. There was a table with different kinds of delicious foods on it. The wise man talked to everybody. The young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him to talk to the wise man.
The wise man listened carefully to the reason for the young man’s visit. He told the young man that at that moment he had no time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He suggested that the young man take a walk around his castle and come back in two hours. “ However, I want to ask you a favour,” he added. He handed the young man a spoon, into which he put two drops of oil. “While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill.”
The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned to see the wise man. “So,” asked the wise man , “did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows Did you see the garden that the best gardeners in our country took ten years to build Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library ”
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the two drops of oil as the wise man had told him.
“Go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. “You can’t trust a man if you don’t know his house.”

Every time Jim crossed the street on his way to work, he would see a little girl selling flowers on the street. She sat by a large green board with the names of the flowers and their prices on it. Unfortunately, no one paid attention to her, and she rarely sold anything. Jim wanted to help her, and one day he got his chance. His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.
“Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses ” Jim said as he approached the girl.
The girl didn’t raise her head and just stared at the same spot on the ground. “I’m Cassy. Thank you for buying flowers from me,” she said. “Could you please select the flowers by yourself and give them to me I will tie them together for you. I can’t see. ”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.
“Here,” she said, holding the bouquet. “That’ll be $5.”
“Thanks. They’re beautiful,” Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.
The next day, Jim went to work and he decided to have a quick talk with Cassy on the way. However, he didn’t see Cassy where she used to be that morning. He thought she might be late and decided to meet her the next day, but she didn’t show up for the next few days in a row (连续地).

My friend was tying to get me to ride a roller coaster — any roller coaster — at Wonderland amusement park in Toronto. But the click, click, click of the cars climbing up the tracks made me fear. The stop at the top, before falling with people’s screams, seemed terrible.
My friends were still trying to persuade me, and I was still saying no, when I suddenly saw a familiar face, one I bad never seen outside a television set. It was Jennifer Capriati - a popular tennis star at the top of her game, already winning titles at the age of fourteen. She was my heroine. I pulled out a pen and the only paper that I could find and walked to her.
She was weaving her way through a rope that led to a ride called the Jet Scream. I was running quickly because I didn’t want to pass up the chance to meet her face to face, but I was also a bit nervous, so I waited at the exit to calm down and get closer to her as she came off the ride.
I watched her climb into a giant spaceship that started to slowly rock. It was soon swinging around in nearly a full circle, putting the screaming riders at unnatural angles. The Jet Scream is the type of ride that could easily make me throw up in two seconds, and I couldn’t bear to watch.
Several minutes later, she got out from the exit, laughing and talking with her brother. I focused on her walking toward me. I looked down at the ground. She walked past. It was more difficult to talk to a star than I thought, but I had to take the chance. I called her name, not very confidently, but more like a question, “Jennifer ” She turned around. Her eyes met mine. Our eyes actually met!
“Would you mind signing for me ” I asked, handing the pen and paper toward her. Her hand wrote over the paper and said, “You are the first person who has recognized me in the park so let’s take a roller coaster together.”

Money were tight, so I was excited when a friend mentioned an online company that was trying to hire writers. On checking the requirements for the post, I knew this was the job for me.
Part of the application process involved writing a test article. I thought over the topic, spent several hours doing research, and produced my best possible effort.
One of the requirements involved the use of software that was new to me. The new software saved automatically as I worked, so that seemed perfect. That saved me from needing to hit “save” even now and then.
After completing the article, I checked it several dozen times. It had to be as near perfection as possible. When I could no longer improve it any more, I told the company that the post was ready for them to read and sent them a link.
A few days passed before the company contacted me. They had refused me. I couldn’t understand why. It must have been my article as, until that point, they seemed happy with everything else. They invited me to try again in ninety days, but there seemed little point in doing that. I had no idea what they didn’t like about my article.
Disappointed, I thanked them politely and wondered what else I could do to improve my income.
Next day, I received another e-mail from the company. They wanted me to post my article again. That seemed strange. What was the point of posting an article they’d already refused Following the advice of my friend, I opened my post once more to see if there were any overlooked problems.
I immediately noticed that an editor for the company had edited the article. She seemed to love the piece until she came to the last paragraph. It had too many typing errors.
Near the end, the text turned into three lines of “n”. Here and there, another letter appeared, and then the “n” continued. Over three lines. The word was hidden among dozens of “n”.
I was shocked. How could that have happened Something must have landed on the keyboard. But how had I not noticed it

Diane Ray was completely self-centred and very spoilt(溺爱的). Her parents gave her everything that she wanted, knowing that she would throw a temper tantrum(耍小孩脾气) if they did not satisfy her desire. She would scream(尖叫) and lie on the floor drumming her heels. Finally her parents always gave in.
That was why she was alone on the beach, wearing an expensive swimsuit. It had taken a big tantrum to get her parents to buy it for her. They were back at the beach-house, recovering from the tantrum she had thrown when they told her that it was too dangerous to go diving alone. “Dangerous ” she had said. “You just don’t want me to have fun. I’m going and if you try to stop me, I’ll scream.”
“What are you doing ” a voice asked. Diane jumped and looked around. She did not know that the man was there until he spoke.
“I’m going to dive,” she answered coldly.
“You shouldn’t swim today,” the man advised. “There is a storm(风暴) coming up.”
“You should mind your own business!” Diane replied and walked into the gentle waves.
“If you go out there you’ll be sorry,” the man called after her. But she did not want to reply.

Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is a joy to be around." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest." Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children stared to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯)with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.

Let him learn the hard way
Paul was with me in the kitchen helping me out with the dishes. From his facial expression and his unmistakable body language I knew he wanted to ask something. Paul is doing his second year in a famous high school. I have always been afraid of spoiling him with my love as he is my only child.
We are well placed in life. Both of us – my husband and I-are human resource executive (主管). As I was about to switch off the kitchen light. Paul came near me with pleading eyes. “Mom. Our school is organizing a trip to the Yellow Stone National Park this time. They are charging only 200 per student, which covers all expenses--train tickets, food and stay. Mom, please, please let me go. I have more than a month’s time to pay the money. And we are going only in our holidays.”
I did not know what to say. My motherly nature was to say an immediate yes to see a smile on my son’s face, But I should not spoil this nice kid. So, I said to him, “Paul, I need to talk to Dad. Can I tell you tomorrow morning ”
“Thanks. Mom.”
After talking with my husband, we agreed to let him go but make him earn the money.
“Paul, Dad and I thought about your trip. Yes, in principle it’s okay for us. But you have to earn it. You said that you have more than a month to pay the money.”
“Thanks a lot, Mom. I shall surely save the money well before the due date.”
“And Paul, I would like to know the progress you make every day. So, let me know how much you have got on a day-to-day basis. You shall write that on this board, Okay ”

Deep into the night, outside Washington, the bus pulled into roadside restaurant, and everybody got off except Vingo. He sat rooted in his seat, and the young people began to wonder about him, trying to imagine his life. When they went back to the bus, one of the girls said brightly, “We’re going to Florida. I hear it’s really beautiful.”
“It is,” he said quietly, as if remembering something he had tried to forget.
“Are you married ”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know ” she said.
“Well, when I was in prison I wrote to my wife,” he said, “I told her that I was going to be away for a long time, and that if she couldn’t stand it, if it hurt too much, well, she could just forget me. I’d understand. Get a new guy, and forget about me. I told her she didn’t have to write to me. And she didn’t. Not for three and a half years.”
“And you’re going home now, not knowing whether she’s still there or not ”
“Yeah,” he said shyly. “Well, last week, when I was sure the parole(假释) was coming through, I wrote to her again. There’s a big oak tree just as you come into town. I told her that if she’d take me back, she should put a yellow handkerchief(手绢) on the tree, and I’d get off and come home. If she didn’t want me, forget it—no handkerchief, and I’d go on through.”
“Wow,” the girl exclaimed.
The next morning they were 20 miles from Brunswick, and the young people took over window seats on the right side, waiting for the approach of the great oak tree. Vingo stopped looking, tightening his face, as if having no courage to face another disappointment.
However, something unexpected happened. Vingo sat there stunned(目瞪口呆的), looking at the oak tree. It was covered with hundreds of yellow handkerchiefs, which was like a banner of welcome billowing in the wind. As the young people shouted, Vingo rose from his seat and made his way to the front of the bus and went home.

The cost of a smile
Kathy was a young woman in her 20’s who worked in a small restaurant as a waitress. One day, as she went about her shift with her usual angry look, a kind old man walked in and sat down at the counter. He read the menu and politely told her what he wanted.
Kathy took his order and yelled, “Your food will be ready soon.” As she turned to leave, the man said, “A smile costs nothing”. Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away.
She brought his order, cleared his plates, and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip.
Each time the old man saw her, he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier.
A week went by, and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say, “A smile costs nothing.”
But a week later, Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words “1 SMILE … $20" at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see.
He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added, “… and a smile, if you don’t mind”. Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud, “Now, now …” The man jokingly scolded. “I ordered a smile, not a laugh”. So Kathy put on a bright smile and said, “Coming right up, sir.” And to her surprise, he left $20 tip!
A few years went by, and the two bonded like family. Charlie, the kind old man, was a retired manager whose wife passed away long ago. He spent most of his time at home, with the exception of his frequent restaurant visits. Every day Kathy spent her break talking to him.

3.I quickly took a new twenty dollar bill out of my wallet and gave it to him. He thanked me with a warm smile and paid for his goods quickly. Then he handed his money to me and kept repeating the grateful words. I told him to keep his money but he demanded that I take his old and worn bill. I nodded, put it in my coat pocket, and wished him a Merry Christmas.
After checking out, I remembered something Mother Teresa once said. It’s about how we all can change the world. “Help one person at a time,” she said. “And always start with the person nearest you.” I put my hand into my pocket, smiled, and went outside. Then I dropped that torn bill into the bell-ringer’s kettle and walked to my car happily humming (哼着) a song to myself. It seems that the whole world is full of love and kindness instead of endless hopelessness. We can change the world with our love. It is easier than it looks too. Just start with the person nearest you.

6.Hearing her invitation, my heart was filled with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I felt good that I was the only fan who got the opportunity. I admired Jennifer Capriati very much and was eager to stay with her a litter longer. On the other hand, I was very afraid of riding a roller coaster. However, I must take the chance and it didn’t take much time to make my decision. I nodded my head and went to a roller coaster with her.
My friend caught up with me and asked, “Are you sure that you want to take a roller coaster ” “Yes,” I answered. “This is the only chance for me to ride a roller coaster with my heroine.” My friend was surprised, because she had spent years trying to persuade me to do that. Fears of heights and moving too fast seemed unimportant now. Although I screamed during the entire time like a girl being chased by an axe killer, I finally survived. That chance of meeting with Jennifer Capriati helped me overcome my fear. I have lived in the world where I am a bit braver.

At that point, our very cute, extremely curious parrot, flew into the room and landed on my shoulder. He usually flew into my room and stood by me while I was working on my computer. Sometimes he would land on the keyboard. He soon learned that if he ran on the keys, little figures appeared on the screen. At some point while my important article was still open on my screen, I must have left the room. While I was away, he came out to play! He must have done a happy tap dance on the letter “n” and then flown away before I returned.
I edited my piece carefully again. This time I made sure it was perfect before closing the window. I wrote a cover e-mail containing a heartfelt apology and explained what I thought had happened. After I sent the letter, I wondered about my wisdom. It really did sound like the age—old excuse teachers hear: “The dog ate my homework!” However, it seemed to do the trick. A few days later, I signed my letter of acceptance to work with the company.

Determined to turn over a new leaf, Vingo began to try his best to make his family live a happy life. Vingo got a job as a worker in an electronic company. Every day, returning from his job, he would cook for the family. Moreover, he also went to the night market to sell home-made cakes to earn more money. 12.One day he didn't come to the restaurant. Kathy couldn't concentrate on her work the whole day. Even when the restaurant was going to close, Charlie didn't show up, and she was trapped in anxiety. After work, Kathy hurried to Charlie's home, only to be told by his neighbors that he had passed away last night. Not until then did she know that he had fought against cancer alone during the past years. Kathy couldn't trust her ears when she heard this. At Charlie's funeral, the happy memories with Charlie kept flashing in her mind.
Several days after the funeral, Kathy received a very important-looking letter in the mail. She opened the letter with her hands shaking slightly. At the sight of the familiar handwriting, tears welled up in Kathy's eyes. Charlie expressed his gratitude for her company these years. It suddenly dawned on Kathy that with the help of Charlie, she transformed from the previous angry-looking waitress to a smiling girl. Only then did she realize the true meaning of smile: bring others warmth and company.
