You start by running around the school track three times to warm up. This is followed by exercises or long jump for the girls and football or basketball for the boys. That is an average 45 -minute PE class— but do you really enjoy it
For students at the Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, sports classes have experienced a welcome change. Senior 2 students now learn the traditional Chinese martial art of sword-fighting (中国剑术), making PE the most popular lesson on the timetable. “The classes used to be boring as we just did the same things again and again,” said Xiao Tong. “But now PE classes are such fun. Sword-fighting is so cool.” His classmate Wei Jie agrees. “As well as being fun, we learn about traditional Chinese culture,” she said. The usual morning exercises performed to music on the school playground have been replaced by kicking and punching practice (搏击操) to a pop music by Zheng Xiuwen. “We didn't pay much attention when we heard the old music,” Xiao explained, “But when Zheng's music is played, we get excited.” Mao Min, the PE teacher who introduced the changes, is pleased that the students now enjoy sports lessons more. “The classes encourage healthy lifestyles and I am always looking for creative ways to keep the students active,” he said. Schools offer activities according to what sports facilities (设备) they have. For example, students at the Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University can choose to learn swimming, taekwondo (跆拳道) or volleyball. “I take my volleyball very seriously so I keep fit by playing it,” said Senior 2 student Zhang Zheng. “Students only try hard in sports that interest them.”
4. Why was Xiao Tong not interested in PE classes in the past
A. Because he didn't do well in sports.
B. Because he disliked the same activities.
C Because he thought the classes too long-
D. Because he was tired of the PE teacher.
5. Which sport is NOT mentioned in the text
A. Sword-fighting. B. Volleyball. C. Skating. D. Punching practice.
6. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Sword-fighting appears in PE classes.
B. Students try hard in all sports at school.
C. Schools offer necessary sports facilities.
D. PE classes are welcoming new changes.
7. What is the attitude of the students towards new PE classes
A. Supportive. B. Negative. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.

The world is being alerted to the possibility of a severe drought crisis caused by the recent heatwave that has affected much of Asia and the arrival of El Ni o, which can cause intense drought for 2 3 years, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Varawut Silpa-archa has warned.
Thailand is susceptible (易受影响的) to the effects of El Ni o, which is forecast to start in June. The world is expected to face an intense drought due to the occurrence of El Ni o, leading to reduced rainfall during the rainy season, or possibly no rain at all.
In addition to the ongoing drought, Thailand is also facing another unprecedented (前所未有的) phenomenon, the so-called “Monster Asian heatwave”. This extreme heatwave underlined growing global warming concerns and has made it even more important to recognise the need to reduce plastic wastes and industrial air pollutants. There is no quick fix, however. Because we have been worsening the environment for many decades, it will take many years of intensive efforts to tackle the global warming problem.
“Preparing to deal with the severe drought crisis for the next 2 3 years is urgent,” Varawut stressed. In the past, Bangkok has experienced flooding and a rising sea level due to the melting of the polar ice caps. If the situation worsens beyond the current level, the El Ni o issue will become even more severe in the next 2 3 years.
Solutions to this problem include building more reservoirs (水库) and expanding the waterways to accommodate rainfall during this rainy season. Although this year’s dry season is a concern, there are still adequate water reserves in the dams. However, the situation is expected to worsen next year and in 2025. Therefore, sufficient water storage facilities and efficient farmland irrigation system are vital preparations.
“Whether the issue of climate change will lead to the collapse of our world, or not, is still up in the air. We may not have reached that stage yet but if we do not speed up efforts to tackle this issue seriously, we may face a loss of biodiversity,” Varawut said.
8. What are the two main factors of the possible drought crisis
A. Flooding and sea level rising. B. Extreme heat and the El Ni o.
C. Melting polar ice caps and plastic waste. D. Industrial air pollutants and global warming.
9. What does the underlined phrase “quick fix” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Good result. B. Big decision. C. Easy solution. D. Perfect excuse.
10. How should the drought crisis be solved according to Varawut
A. By reducing plastic waste.
B. By expanding more farmland.
C. By increasing the amount of rainfall.
D. By constructing enough water storage facilities.
11. Which statement will Varawut probably agree with
A. The collapse of the world is on the way.
B. The loss of biodiversity is not a major concern.
C. The effects of climate change are still uncertain.
D. Efforts to address climate change need to be sped up.
D
Think back to your first memory. How old were you at the time Chances are you can’t remember anything earlier than kindergarten or primary school — nothing about your first words, steps, or solid food other than what your parents have later told you. This phenomenon is called “infantile amnesia”, due to which the majority of adults rarely remember things that happen to them before the age of three.
So why is it that we can’t remember being a baby The answer lies in the way that our brain’s ability to store memories changes as we grow. At birth, a baby’s brain is only a quarter of its adult size, growing to three-quarters the size of an adult brain by age two. This increase is associated with a growth in the number of brain cells — called neurons (神经元) — and the connections between these cells.
A part of the brain that is particularly important in forming memories is the hippocampus (海马体), says Dr Dhanisha Jhaveri, a researcher at The University of Queensland. This region stores autobiographical memories from specific events in our lives. “In the hippocampus, new neurons are constantly being created. In adulthood, new cells are still being produced, but the rate of production in the hippocampus slows down,” says Dr Jhaveri.
Neuroscientists believe that the rapid rate at which brain cells are being produced in childhood could be the cause of infantile amnesia. Because so many new neurons are being produced and form connections with each other in memory circuits, they might disrupt (扰乱) existing networks of memories that have already formed.
Despite this memory loss, childhood experiences have been found to influence adult behaviour years later, which suggests that traces of these memories could be stored somewhere in the brain that isn’t easy to access.
In research in animals, scientists have found that latent (潜在的) traces of early experiences remain in the brain for a long time, and can later be triggered (触发) by a reminder. It highlights the important influence of early life experiences on mental and emotional well-being later in life.
12. What is infantile amnesia
A. The inability to form memories during adulthood. B. The inability to recall early experiences.
C. The influence on existing memory networks. D. The influence on mental and emotional well-being.
13. What do we learn about the brain according to the passage
A. New neurons disrupt existing memory circuits. B. The hippocampus plays a passive role in one’s memory.
C. A baby’s brain is three-quarters the size of an adult brain. D. Brain cells are being produced more rapidly in adulthood.
14. What does the research in animals show
A. Memories are stored separately in their brain. B. Memories are mainly formed when they are young.
C. Early experiences have a long-term impact on life. D. Early experiences are easy to be triggered by a reminder.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Formation of Early Childhood Memories
B. The Impact of Infantile Amnesia on Memory Networks
C. The Role of the Hippocampus in Memory Formation
D. The Influence of Early Life Experiences on Mental Well-being

You’ve just received your final grades and they’re not exactly what you were hoping for. To make matters worse, your BFF’s grades have got you green with envy. Try not to panic. We’ve put together some tips to help you manage.
Be happy for them
First things first, make sure you start things off right by congratulating them for doing well this semester (学期). We’re not going to lie. This can be hard when you’re overwhelmed with jealousy (忌妒), but your BFF has worked for it and they deserve to be celebrated. Don’t hate them for their achievements.____16____. Just ask what kind of friend you want to be—one who is proud of their bestie’s achievements or one who lets jealousy get in the way

Jealousy can quickly become a problem for both your friendship and your mental health when it’s repressed. So, ____17____. Ask yourself where this jealousy is coming from and whether your BFF getting a better grade than you actually matters in the long run. Getting to the root of these feelings is an important first step to overcoming your jealousy.
Use it as motivation
Feeling jealous doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The fact that you’re envious of your friend’s grades means that you care about your studies. One of the best things to do in this situation is to use your jealousy as motivation to do better. Figure out where you went wrong and learn from your mistakes. Don’t focus all your energy on feeling upset.____18____.
Focus on what you learned, not the grades you received

____20____
The fact that your BFF received a higher grade than you doesn’t mean you’re a failure. We need to stop using other people’s successes as a benchmark for our own self-worth. Life isn’t a competition. Focus on your own strengths, appreciate yourself more, and soon enough your jealousy will just melt away.
A. Try not to compare yourself to others

As Hurricane Ian bore down on Florida, many residents who decided to stay found themselves unable to leave.
When the water slipped in under the door of their home in Naples, Florida, it was just a sign that it was time to go.
It was around noon on Wednesday, September 28 last year and Darcy Bishop woke up her two brothers who had been resting after lunch. She pulled the wheelchair up to the oldest, Russell Rochow, 66. Her other brother, Todd Rochow, 63, was in his room, changing clothes. He could manage with a walker.
Both men had been born with disabilities, and their mental development was like that of a young child. But they found joy in their surroundings. Russell loved riding the bus and going to parks. Todd liked collecting cans at the beach and playing on the boat in the neighbor, Hance Walters’ home. Bishop, 61, was their lifeline, their little sister who had long felt a duty to keep them safe.
“We’ve got to get going!” she shouted to Todd. She went to open the front door. It would not move. The weight of the water on the other side had shut it tight.
She rushed to try the door to the garage, where Todd’s walker was stored. It, too, was stuck.
That’s when the house the three brothers shared began to flood.
The only way to go was up.
Bishop guided Todd to the stairs, and he grabbed the banister(栏杆). She helped him pull himself slowly up to the top where he waited in a chair.
But stairs were impossible for Russell, who could neither walk nor bend his stiff legs.
Bishop dragged on the belt around Russell’s waist, but he was nearly 77 kilograms. She tried every position possible, switching from pushing to pulling, and managed to get him up a few carpeted steps.
But the water followed.
Bishop called 911 and was told someone would come soon. But out the window she could already see furniture, boats and cars floating by.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. D

词义猜测题。根据下文“Because we have been worsening the environment for many decades, it will take many years of intensive efforts to tackle the global warming problem.”(由于几十年来我们一直在恶化环境,因此解决全球变暖问题将需要多年的努力。)
根据第五段“Solutions to this problem include building more reservoirs (水库) and expanding the waterways to accommodate rainfall during this rainy season.”(解决这个问题的办法包括建造更多的水库和扩大水道以适应雨季的降雨。)和“Therefore, sufficient water storage facilities and efficient farmland irrigation system are vital preparations.”(因此,充足的蓄水设施和高效的农田灌溉系统是至关重要的准备工作。)可知,Varawut认为干旱危机应该通过建造充足的蓄水设施来解决。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段Varawut所说的话“We may not have reached that stage yet but if we do not speed up efforts to tackle this issue seriously, we may face a loss of biodiversity.”(我们可能还没有达到这个阶段,但如果我们不加快努力认真解决这个问题,我们可能会面临生物多样性的损失。)可知,Varawut可能会同意加快应对气候变化的做法。故选D。

Just ask what kind of friend you want to be—one who is proud of their bestie’s achievements or one who lets jealousy get in the way
Confront (正视) your feelings

____19____. Rather than worrying about your grades, try to focus on the knowledge and skills you learned throughout the semester and how they helped you improve as a person. Either way, your time at school has helped you grow in a way that can’t be measured by your GPA(Grade Point Average).
B. Attempt to be honest with how you’re feeling
C. While grades are important, they aren’t everything

【答案】 Mooncakes: a taste that is out of this world!
Of all the foods I have ever tried the mooncake is my favourite. There are many versions of mooncakes from different places around China. They have a variety of fillings and among them I love the sweet red bean filling best.
I remember trying my first mooncake with my family when I was very little. We sat outside in my grandparents’ yard while the full moon shone above us. It was a very special moment. My elderly grandmother still bakes mooncakes for the whole family every year. She can turn the flour and red beans into wonderful mooncakes like magic. When she places them on the table, they look adorable—small, round and shiny golden-brown. The delicious smell soon reaches my nose and my mouth starts to water. When I pick up a mooncake, it feels warm and heavy in my hand. As I take each bite, the sweet and mild flavour of the red bean filling slowly fills mymouth.
The mooncake is always my favourite because of its satisfying taste that is out of this world and the happy memories it brings to mind.
Tiramisu cheers me up
My favourite food is a popular Italian dessert called tiramisu.
I first tried it about two years ago when I visited a bakery with my parents. Each spoonful of this amazing dessert is a light, creamy experience to remember. There are three layers of the cake and the cheese is between the layers, making the dessert feel soft and smooth. There is also a bitter taste of coffee but this flavour is not very strong. Tiramisu does not look very attractive—it’s brown, because of the coffee and dark chocolate, and white, because of the cream and cheese—but all these ingredients make it taste delicious!
Since I tried it for the first time, tiramisu has become my favourite dessert. I have also learnt that the name tiramisu means “cheer me up” in Italian. Whenever I feel unhappy, I eat this dessert and it does make me feel better!

【答案】 Meanwhile, Bishop was crazy and desperate. She would pull Russell up one step, only to see the water rise with them. Her nervousness was comforted by Russell’s funny behavior. Grabbing the banister, he counted the pictures on the wall. “Look, Darcy: one, two, three, four.” “That’s very good, Russ” Bishop said with tears rolling down her cheeks. It took them a good hour, but they finally made it up eight steps to the first small landing, then three steps to the second, and then a handful of steps more. She sat down beside him, and waited.
At around 6:30 p. m., Russell said, “Somebody’s downstairs.” Full of hope, Bishop called out, “Hello ! Hello ! Who’s there ” It was her neighbour, Hance Walters. Learning she was in trouble, Walters went to his house and fetched a boat. Bishop tried to bring her brothers outside. There, they were lifted into the boats. Todd and Russell were safe. They have not said much about the sufferings they survived, only saying that they wanted things to return to normal. “I don’t want no more hurricane” they both repeated.
