My senior years, I can’t believe it is almost over. Now when I look back, it was stressful, but exciting, the ball, graduation, and then of course, college.
I started applying for my college months before Christmas. My parents told me it would be smart if I set up interviews and tours. But I wasn’t motivated. I wanted to go to college, but I didn’t want to deal with the stress.
As the days flew by, my applications lay on my desk just as I had left them three months before. “You are wasting valuable time,” my parents complained. Sweeping away the gathered dust on the applications, I worked on them every Sunday until I finished. Next came writing the essays. I had many ideas, but every school had different requirements. I changed them until I was pleased. Finally, everything was underway.
Now I just had to wait. In March, I started receiving letters of rejection. I began to think that I had set myself up for disappointment. I had a letter from Salem State College starting that they wanted to see my grades before they made their decision. Yes! At least someone wanted to consider me. At the beginning of April, I received a letter from Keens State. Those opening words: “We regret to inform you…” made me sit down and cry. I had lost all hope. Then I heard from Plymouth State. Not my first choice, but…I had been accepted. Maybe if I get my grades up, I can choose another school…
The college application hurt me deeply. All my friends had dozens of schools to choose from. I guess my parents were right. High school grades are undoubtedly important to your future plans. If I could do it all over again, I would take it more seriously.
4. What does the sentence “We regret to inform you…” mean
A. The writer was accepted by the college.
B The writer couldn’t go to college forever.
C. The writer couldn’t go to any college.
D. The writer was rejected by the college.
5. From the last paragraph, we know the writer felt ________.
A. honorable B. regretful(遗憾的)
C. hopeless D. happy
6. From the text, we know that ________.
A. the writer didn’t go to a college
B. the writer thought senior years was easy
C. the writer didn’t desire to go to college.
D. the writer didn’t prepare interviews actively
7. Why was the writer rejected by many colleges
A He didn’t choose a good college.
B. He got bad grades in senior years.
C. He wanted to deal with the stress.
D. Every school had different requirements.
C
A large number of India’s urban(城区的) poor kids receive little or no education. Even if they enter a formal school, their dropout rates are very high. Door Step School (DSS) aims to bridge the huge gap between these kids and education.
True to its name, Door Step School sets up a school right at the doorstep of kids who can’t get formal education due to a variety of reasons.
The team at DSS follows a direct model—they set up a classroom in any area, a footpath, construction site, or underpass, where they foresee the greatest need. They look for proper locations, and after making sure that enough resources are in place, they accept students in the area. DSS provides lessons of different levels. The organization even tries to provide classes in the local language, or whatever the students choose.
Another interesting project of DSS is a school on wheels. It uses a bus that has been changed into a classroom, which holds about 25 kids at a time.
Since it was started in 1988, Door Step School has spread from Mumbai to the neighbouring city of Pune in Maharashtra, covering a larger area and number of kids. Now DSS has a team of more than 1,000 volunteers and teachers who change more than 70,000 lives each year.
DSS doesn’t end at kids. The organisation educates parents on the importance of sending their kids to school. Its efforts have brought education to thousands of students in the last two decades. Their belief in education for all has not only changed children’s lives but also continued the fight against one of the biggest problems India faces. All children have the right to an education, and DSS is providing just that.
8. Why is the organization named “Door Step School”
A. It is different from formal schools.
B. It is usually built near students’ houses.
C. It sets up schools in areas with large populations.
D. It provides education wherever children can easily go.
9. What can we learn about the lessons provided by “Door Step School”
A. They are better than formal school lessons.
B. They include whatever a school can provide.
C. They suit children at different levels.
D. They are easy for kids to learn by themselves.
10. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The development of Door Step School.
B. The foundation of Door Step School.
C. The management of Door Step School.
D. The future of Door Step School.
11. It can be inferred that one of the biggest problems India faces is that _______.
A. there are no formal schools B. many children receive no education
C. children refuse to attend schools D. the country is short of teachers
D
A new study suggests some of America’s favorite Independence Day fireworks can give out lead and copper (铜), which are used to give fireworks their vivid colors, and also damage human cells and animal lungs.
Led by researchers at NYU, the study showed poisonous levels of lead in the fireworks. Experiments showed that lung exposure to particle emissions (颗粒排放物) from five types of fireworks significantly increased oxidation (氧化), a chemical process in the body that can damage or even kill cells.
The researchers say the new study is believed to be the first to examine the effects of firework exposure in human cells and living animals, and to test for particles of common firework metals thrown into the atmosphere.
“While many are careful to protect themselves from injury from explosions, our results suggest that inhaling firework smoke may cause, longer-term physical damage, a risk that has been largely ignored,” says study senior author Terry Gordon, a professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine.
Gordon and his team also analyzed 14 air quality samples taken at dozens of sites across the US throughout each year. They found that levels of poisonous metals were higher in samples taken on Independence Day and New Year’s Eve celebrations than at any other time of the year. Along with lead, copper and other poisonous metals are commonly found in fireworks. “Our research shows that although we are only exposed to these poisonous substances for a short time each year, they are much more poisonous than the pollutants we breathe every day,” says Gordon.
Gordon cautions (警告) that the current investigation is the first step, only addressing the potential effects of one-time exposure to the firework metals. He says repeated exposure is likely a larger concern. Nevertheless, he is planning to share his findings with local health officials, firework producers, the Environmental Protection Agent, and other regulatory agents to alert them to the potential for harm.
12. Why do some fireworks harm our health
A. They are oxidized in the air.
B. They can give out harmful metals.
C. They are exposed to particle emissions.
D. They can melt chemical substances in the body.
13. What does the underlined word “inhaling” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Letting out. B. Working out.
C. Taking in. D. Blowing off.
14. What can we infer from Gordon’s research findings
A. Fireworks are the main cause of air pollution.
B. Air quality on New Year’s Eve is above normal.
C. People breathe in poisonous air for a short time daily.
D. Air pollution on Independence Day is worse than usual.
15. What does Gordon intend to do with fireworks-related persons
A. Remind them not to set off fireworks.
B. Caution them against producing metals.
C. Alert them to the harm of the experiment.
D. Warn them of the possible dangers of fireworks.

B. The writer couldn’t go to college forever.
C. The writer couldn’t go to any college.
D. The writer was rejected by the college.
5. From the last paragraph, we know the writer felt ________.
A. honorable B. regretful(遗憾的)

6. From the text, we know that ________.
A. the writer didn’t go to a college
B. the writer thought senior years was easy
C. the writer didn’t desire to go to college.
D. the writer didn’t prepare interviews actively
7. Why was the writer rejected by many colleges
A. He didn’t choose a good college.
B. He got bad grades in senior years.
C. He wanted to deal with the stress.
D. Every school had different requirements.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. D 7. B

I loved helping others and didn’t think much about it.
