People often think of the North Pole(北极)and the South Pole as similar frozen(冰冻的)wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are as low as -30℃.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. About 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1919. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic(北极圈)on foot. They may face cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface(表面). Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water(水道)called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

Mum would set an old coffee pot at the side of the fire and slowly warm the milk, adding chocolate and sugar, and stirring (搅摔) until they became thick and rich brown. More than once, I could remember people that passed by stepped into our camp to enjoy mother’s work. And mum always gave these strangers some hot chocolate to enjoy.
Once we had to stay in our tent for days because of a terrible rainstorm. Every morning I was woken up by the sweet smell of Mum’s hot chocolate.

A new mobile app called Farm Assistant, developed by Wu Zeyin, makes farm work easier in Botswana.
Wu, an 11-year-old student from Hubei, moved to Botswana with his family seven years ago.
In Botswana, the desert climate is very common in most parts. “During the past years living in the country, I found there weren’t many kinds of fruits and vegetables sold at local supermarkets, and quality was poor,” he said. The low yield (产量) of common crops (庄稼) has much to do with the climate. For a long time, Botswana had to import many fruits and vegetables from neighboring countries to meet the needs of its people.
In July last year, there was a pilot project to grow China’s water-saving and drought-tolerant (耐旱的) rice in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, which brought Wu some new ideas. When he got the news, he decided to develop an app for the local farmers. The app supports several crops commonly grown locally, including tomatoes, potatoes, onions, corn, carrots, and cabbage. Farmers who use the app can click on the crop picture to see its watering needs, seed (种子) price, selling price and yield. After planting the seeds, farmers click the timer to start, and the app reminds them what to do at each stage.
Wu said there is an old saying in China: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
1. ________ makes it difficult to grow common crops.
A. The desert climate B. The poor seed quality

A. Farmers can buy fruits from it. B. It was developed seven years ago.
C. It supports several crops except corn. D. Farmers can see the yield of the plants.
3. What does the underlined word “import” mean

4. What can we infer (推断) from Wu Zeyin’s words “teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

When I was a little kid, my parents were poor, and we lived in a camp in the countryside in Portland. Dad had two jobs and Mum was in bad health.
Our clothes were always old and our food was usually cheap and simple. However, we were always satisfied with our hot chocolate, which was made in a traditional way handed down from my grandmother to my mother.
At that time, there was no store to buy anything we needed. We just had powdered cocoa (可可粉) in our camp. Mum would set an old coffee pot at the side of the fire and slowly warm the milk, adding chocolate and sugar, and stirring (搅摔) until they became thick and rich brown. The wonderful smell of chocolate filled the camp.

3. What does the underlined word “import” mean
A 制造 B. 进口 C. 清洗 D. 分类
4. What can we infer (推断) from Wu Zeyin’s words “teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
